What's up, people! I"m back with another Roxy Music reaction from their 1972 self-titled debut album. And honestly, how is this music from 1972? Or Earth more generally? Join me for some more insane sonics from this band. Cheers!

The sound in this song is epic and legendary. Brian Eno’s work is pure otherworldly amazingness.

Now you can see why they were such an inspiration for so many of those 80's bands that you've come to know and love.

This song was Roxy’s first big hit in the uk. Themselves and Bowie just blew the place apart in the very early 70s!

Yaay! Roxy Music - "What's her name - Virginia Plain" - Always loved that ending, everyone used to wait for it and say it! I found it 'amusing' that you thought it was insane, as it was just 'normal' to me growing up. I suppose we were used to it in the UK. Roxy, David Bowie, T.Rex etc which started a big glam rock era which lasted a few years here. The U.S. didn't seem to 'understand' it. Loads more good Roxy tunes like this - Love is The Drug / Do the Strand. Hope you eventually get to my favourite 'Both Ends Burning'. 😀

Roxy Music began inventing the 80's in 1972. This song actually wasn't on their debut album. It was their first single which was actually cut after the album was released. On subsequent editions, the record company added Virginia Plain to the Roxy Music debut album. Other Roxy Music suggestions: "The Thrill of it All" "Grey Lagoons" "The Space Between" "Street Life" "If There Is Something" "The End of the Line" "True to Life"

When Roxy Music had reunion shows in the US in 2001(saw them at the Greek Theatre), they never performed this song. In the UK and the rest of Europe, they would end their shows with this song. Bryan Ferry would sing, "What's her name?", and the audience would reply, "Virginia Plain". Bryan Ferry did perform this song in the US when he toured for his album Mamouna back in 1994 (saw him at the Pantages that year) and that was a treat. Go and listen to Roxy Music's album Siren and you will see how this band evolved over the years. Happy New Year to you.

Great that you're reviewing Roxy Music. Turned the early 70s upside down and they were a major influence on Punk, New Romantic etc. IMHO the first 5 studio albums from 72 to 75 are unbelievable. Enjoy the ride!

Yep, "insane" is a good description. Short and energetic. "Virginia Plain" wasn't on the original album, being recorded after its release and added to later releases. Apparently they (or the record company) didn't see a song from the album being suitable for a single release. Anyway, it was a hit in GB and fueled interest in the first album. Roxy Music's second single, "Pyjamarama", was released shortly before the second album, not appearing on the album as well. It's in the folder of the second album after the album tracks.

I love this song..loved it when I first heard it in 1972 and still love it today. The band have admitted this song’s words have no real meaning…Robert E. Lee was the name of the band’s lawyer and not the US Confederate General…and Virginia Plain was inspired by a brand of cigarette tobacco - Virginia Plain! Brian Ferry and Roxy Music were trailblazers and broke all the rules to great effect..so smooth and elegant and their music is all so damned danceable!

Great review Matt, the only issue is the music is drowning you out, I like to hear your comments but I couldn't make them out, it is the same on a few of your recent Tears For Fears review. I was born in 58, so Roxy Music are one of the seventies bands I grew up with. I remember the first single I bought of theirs was called Pyjamarama, it wasn't released on an album, it might have been a double A side with Virginia Plain, it's a great song with a unique beginning, I hope you cover it.

Hey, Michael! Cheers, appreciate the feedback. Maybe part of the issue with this tune and "Schrodinger's Cat" is they're both loud songs, but I do understand how my in-song comments being drowned out isn't ideal. So I'll see what I can do. Cheers, brother.

Bryan Ferry was way ahead of his time, Roxy was his baby, Eno was an influence but only under Bryans direction. Bryan Ferry has those elusive and unattainable, to 99.9% of entertainers, qualities of intelligence, originality, style, imagination, ability and competence. He is a true Genius.
