Rabbits are burrowing foraging animals. They need hay daily for optimum health if you want them to be breeders. The reason these rabbits won't breed is because their physical and instinctual needs are not being met They need either enough hay/straw to burrow down in or a nesting box with some hay/straw to hide in and keep warm in the winter and yes even the males need to burrow. I grew up around rabbits so I do know about how to breed them. My grandfather raised pedigree show rabbits for 35 years. We also harvested and ate the ones that weren't show quality. Put a good bedding of hay/straw in with your rabbits and after a week or so with them being able to burrow then try breeding them and see the difference. I know it's not how Joel does it but these are for Lily and they deserve better than what Joel does.
@Junkinsally2 жыл бұрын
Rabbits absolutely do not need daily hay. This a misconception. They need something to chew on daily, which can be a wooden stick(apple wood is excellent) or a root of some kind. Rabbits in the wild do not eat hay. Hay is good to combat boredom but they can thrive on pellet feed alone.
@nanajack85272 жыл бұрын
Sorry Justin but those rabbits need bedding if you are leaving them in cages. If their water is freezing imagine how cold that wire is getting and they have nowhere to shelter or bed down.

@WillowsDream2 жыл бұрын
@@SadraBC not without some kind of bedding. Do wild rabbits sit outside and sleep on the ground in the cold weather? No they do not, they burrow down underground and make nests that they line with grass and fur to keep them warm and safe from predators. These rabbits are constantly exposed with no way to nest. They would have no idea that wire is keeping them safe. Their instincts will tell them they are in danger while they have no where to hide. They will not breed while being kept like that.
@wisewoman79062 жыл бұрын
I raised rabbits for a few years in a hobby rabbitry. At one point, I had over 100 rabbits in about 60+ cages and hutches. They all had nest boxes even when not kindling. Solitary bucks were in cages, under cover, with lots of straw when it was cold. Mine were on 1/2" hardware cloth but never had sore hocks because of nest boxes with lots of straw. Rabbits are a little higher maintenance than pastured livestock. Their natural inclination is to dig a den, which is reproduced by straw in a nest box. Pregnant does can absorb a litter if they are frightened, or they will totally abandon a freshly kindled litter if they are frightened. They can also break their own backs if frightened badly enough, by running around looking for a hiding place, or by stomping their back feet if a threat is too close. I know you hold to minimal intervention with your livestock, Justin, but rabbits are in another category.

Rabbits live underground for a reason and keeping them exposed like this must be so stressful for them. Happy Bunnies will give you more bunny babies. Also bunny babies need to be kept warm and in a nesting box at the very least. I admire you and your family so much becasue of the utmost care that you give most of your animals but for some reason you have choosen the most rabbit unfriendly environment. You could build a 2 story system that have nesting boxes at the top level and a wire caged bottom layer and the poop will still fall through. Bunnies don't tend to soil the space where they sleep.

Agreed with other commenters regarding the rabbits. Their set up really needs some revamping. I'm all about growing your own food, as we do too, but the rabbits have no stimulation, or enrichment. They live in bare steel wire cages.
@ren2ski2 жыл бұрын
I rarely comment but I'm a bit confused as to the ehtos of raising and care of animals. ie. mentor Joel Salatin called on readers to ditch factory farming and the kinds of food systems and eating habits that don’t 'honour life'. He said we can honour the way animals and plants were designed to exist in nature ie. understand and embrace the “pigness of pigs” - and collectively raise our food in that vein. So why are rabbits not treated in this same way. Why are they treated (sorry I can't think of another example) like battery hens in sterile cages that hurt their feet/hocks... Geoff Lawton is co-housing rabbits with chickens in the Jordan Greening the Desert Project - apparently with success. Sorry I love rabbits they're so sweet and I imagine how I would feel if I was forced to live so outside the 'rabbitness of rabbits'. I raised rabbits for many years it was wonderful they're amazing. Utter respect to you and yours for your wonderful content and family I know it's not particularly smooth running a homestead but I hope you will consider the different perspectives.

Hey Justin, Please give the rabbits a larger cage and especially not one with a grid floor! I understand that everything should be as efficient and easy to maintain as possible but that isn‘t really nice for these social and active animals. After all, your cows, pigs, sheep and chickens have it nice too. The rabbits also deserve something better. So I think it is not very difficult to see that the rabbits do not have a nice life in these circumstances. Please make sure your chickens cannot get on top of your rabbit cages. They will poop on the rabbits and it is quite caustic to their fur. And once they have babies, you have to be super careful, because chickens will peck at baby rabbit feet from underneath once they get out of the nesting boxes. The one year we tried keeping them together we closed off the underside of cages to prevent that and put plastic corrugated roofing on top of the cages to prevent roosting, pooping chickens.

MOST greens will reverse inflammation along with turmeric, ginger, sweet potatoes, turnips, kiwis, blueberries, Brussel sprouts, Lennon, orange pineapple. Pretty much what he's not eating and he wonders why he always hurts.

The look Henry gave you after you said you had Gideon, priceless! 😏Henry is going to have a lot to say in the years to come. When you talk in your vlog he’s in your back babbling away like its HIS show, hahha!

For any animal that goes down, massage and Tellington touch will be very helpful tools for recovery.

You can use a vibrating massager on their legs to get the circulation moving faster. They have them at Walmart for less than $10.

Gayle Watkins you are so right about tomatoes and night shade veggies……..they increase inflammation…. I have arthritis and I loved tomatoes but I love freedom from pain a lot more

We don't leave our girls in the premier fencing over night... I'm a wuss and a new homesteader but we walk the girls down to the paddocks in the morning and put them in the pasture that's hard fenced at night.

Hi Justin ... getting heads stuck thru fences is common with horned goats... easy fix (short of de-horning - ewwww!) take a length of small PVC pipe that is longer than the distance between her horns... tape the pipe on to her horns and she WON'T be able to get her head thru the fence. Works well.... Glad to see her get up...
