In case anyone was wondering, as i didn't see it mentioned in the description: this canal clean up is in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. These volunteers get together most Sundays to work through the various canals. There is a write up about them on the Al Jazeera news site.

@@SHARON-B That would be nice, but there's always going to be rubbish that escapes, things that blow out of bins in storms, people dropping things by accident, animals breaking open trash, etc, so even in a world where everyone is responsible for there rubbish you still need cleanup crews to catch what falls through the net. Not to mention, a lot of these clean ups were largely clearing out the overgrowth of waterways that just hadn't had maintenance, causing them to be blocked by living plants and natural debris like leaves and twigs. Surely you're not going to accuse the trees of littering, right?

While many scientists are spending money researching how to restore the canal, this team of volunteers rushed to clean up and I also responded, but I cleaned up abandoned houses.

@@HappyMowing88 It's and, and, and, and. Authorities need to come up with a waste infrastructure and waste management system and people need to be educated and fined if they dont follow the rules. And then the canals need to be cleaned up and a plan needs to be made to keep it clean and make it healthy again and locks and pumps probably need to be built to regulate the waterlevel, increase flow to flush them and waste collection points where natural debris can flow to to be easily taken out and simple waste barriers like this, thanks to scientists kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJbTdHWQdr-EZ6M

@@pc750-V4 It can happen, you have no idea what the US roads looked like in the 70’s and 80’s. It was common for people to throw fast food bags and trash out of their cars on the roads. It takes time but it can happen. The US roads are amazingly clean now.

@@RelaxingABC-gu9bi Need harsh government penalties and fines for businesses or people that do this. It won't eliminate the problem, but it reduces it significantly. Here in the US you can get a hefty ticket for littering. Again, doesn't eliminate the issue, but it does mitigate it significantly. There's very few places, even in cities, that look anything like this. Usually these places are on private property out of view.

nice clean up . have to ask, how long before ppl start throwing their trash in again? the clean up is nice , but you need to educate about proper trash disposal, otherwise it's work for nothing

The total neglect over a long period of time leads to these massive buildup that choke the canal. After these huge effort of cleanup, regular maintenance should be deployed to prevent the recurrence of a choked and polluted canal and negate the amazing work done by these volunteers. The transformation of these cleanups is awesome.
