This brought me insight on how tripping on psychedelics works. The reason the faces distort is because the image is changed before your brain can take in the details and the effects add up as your brain falls farther behind. Also the fact that it's in your peripheral vision. Through personal experience, visual distortions seem to be more prevalent in your peripherals. In sober day to day life I've also noticed visual distortions in my peripherals when I start to zone out and stare at one spot. I don't have an explanation on why we see patterns in psychedelics though, maybe that everything in nature is made from advanced math and sciences Edit: fixing autocorrect errors
@epkoda Жыл бұрын
from my understanding, the general mechanism behind hallucinations/visual distortions (not only on psychedelics) is basically too much pattern recognition. "pattern recognition", in this case, is referring to our brains associating visual signals with certain objects. basically, since the only information our brains receive from our eyes is what photoreceptors are activated, the brain has a certain system for transforming those firing patterns into a recognisable object. kinda like how image files on computers are stored as strings of numbers, and the computer has to decode those numbers to figure out how to display the image. this distortion illusion gives insight into how this process works. since our peripheral vision is bad at detecting details, our brains tend to amplify the features of faces in our peripheral vision. you need a lot of details to analyse and recognise a face, so we evolved to overexaggurate them. the hallucinations you're reffing to are slightly different. they are caused by something (for example a substance) tampering with this algorithm, so a firing patterns is associated with something else (for example a patterns of white noise, which wasn't associated with anything beforehand, can become associated with a face. this is why looking at grainy surfaces like towels or carpets tends to produce more hallucinations).

Wow, this technique works even when flashed slowly like this. In fact, I think it works better! Gives you a longer time to 'observe' the effect. I did find that I was switching my eyes to one or the other more grotesque image and seeing the real person before the image switched off, but I dont think that's really a bad thing as you can move right back to the centre and get more f'ed up faces immediately. Great work!

The effect seems to depend on processing each face in light of the others. By aligning the faces at the eyes and presenting them quickly, it becomes much easier to compare them, so the differences between the faces are more extreme. If someone has a large jaw, it looks almost ogre-like. If they have an especially large forehead, then it looks particularly bulbous. We’re conducting several experiments right now to figure out exactly what’s causing this effect, so watch this space! (copied)
@parkerjones16792 жыл бұрын
I would disagree as if you cover up one side of screen (one of the faces) and continue to stare at the plus with the other face in you peripheral vision, you find that it has the same effect.

Its even weirder when you look at one side. The side tou look at is normal but then the other side gets distorted even more
@meredocu9 жыл бұрын
it is almost as the brain had a "normalized" idea of humans faces, and extrapolate distinctive disparity when flashed quickly on the side of our sight. I have so much questions, does the brain realized that these are faces? (does the part of the brain which is known to be used for face recognition is activated?) if not, have u tried a quick algorithm to reproduce the deformed image (by accentuating the size of large plain area for example), if yes, are autistic person ( they respond differently on face recognition ) affected by this effect ? more or less? is it different? how many persistence time does it takes for the effect to disappear? (do the effect really disappear?)

A thing I found was I kept seeing people's faces mirrored. Like half of their face mirrored onto the other as if my brain was trying to extrapolate on limited information, and that was partially responsible for fucking things up. This along with more noticeable features being often exaggerated makes this a convincing explanation
@dar1n_fgp5 жыл бұрын
My guess is that schioztypic type symptoms interfere with it, just like a schizophrenic cant understand the negative-face type illusion where it appears that its gaze follows you. Autism may interfere, but not nearly as much in my estimation.

My eyesight is horrible to the point where I can barely make out facial features without my glasses. Guess what? The distortions still happened. This means it is more than just vision causing this. Holy crap close one of your eyes and the people on one side become CYCLOPES!!! Now I know exactly what is causing this and I can maybe explain it. My hunch is that since the faces are out of focus when we look at the "+" sign, the brain is trying to use whatever information it has to fill in the blank. It just blows my mind that one side becomes cyclopes when I closed one of my eye and played the video. Has anybody done this? Actually, I also think that this illusion also makes use of our natural blind spot we all have in each eye and that's why the cyclops thing happened. For me at least. You can find your eye's blind spot by looking at the cross and then moving it towards the left on one celebrity face or the right on another celebrities face. For example my blindspot was just on the same plane of the cheek but below the eye of tom cruise on the right of his picture. It was in a similar place for the lady but on the cheek level but beneath the eye. (The place where the maxillary bone meets the zygomatic bone.) This illusion is solved lol. EDIT: Ok wikipedia these two concepts Blind Spot Filling-in (this should be at the bottom of the blind spot page to click to this page) This is what is happening in this video.

I noticed that the effect occurs even more so if you watch one lot of faces and peripherally see the others. But the effect is simultaneous when focused on the cross hair. Also wiggling your attention from the cross hair when paused will create the distortion. For me Halle Berry's face stunned me the most even though she is stunningly beautiful to look at (directly). I had curtains printed with the "Mr Men" characters (1980's Pepper pig sort of fellas) in my room as a toddler and they absolutely scared the crap outa me due to this effect. My parents just kept shaking them "Look there's nothing there", I felt mum was only pissing them off more by doing that Hehehehe. Terrific video thanks for reminding me of my human software glitches!!
