Drowning occurs when water enters the lungs from being in or below the water. A person can drown in less than 60 seconds! It has been reported that it only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown and roughly 40 seconds for an adult-and in some cases, it can take as little as a ½ cup of water to enter the lungs for the phenomenon to occur.
If coughing persists after 20-30 minutes, seek medical attention. If you notice that someone is coughing, vomiting, has trouble breathing, complains of tightness in the chest, has difficulty speaking and/or experiences any changes in levels of consciousness after being in the water, call 9-1-1. “A laryngospasm (or ‘dry drowning’) can progress rapidly,”

For those that don't know already: NEVER dive in and try to save a drowning person (unless it's a little kid). That person will grab, claw, and take you down under the water with them. It won't matter how good of a swimmer you are. You need to throw them a life vest, a rope, or something else they can grab on to. Thoughts?!

@@chuckcts-v3460 So many years ago, as a 13 year old punk kid I was working on lifesaving merit badge for a Boy Scout requirement. The method you described above is what we were suppose to accomplish. The dude we were practicing saving was a volunteer US Marine. He drug my ass down to the deep end and pressed my face on the bottom of the pool. Some lessons are earned the hard way. Throw don't Go!

Not exactly. If you are trained in water rescue, you dive in, grab them, throw them on their back, grab them under the chin to keep their head above the water while you "side-swim"(side stroke) under them (while keeping your hand under their chin to keep their mouth out of the water) and keep telling them to relax and not panic while you swim them to shore. Standard water rescue procedure. Perhaps it is hard to explain but if you have bothered to take the training, you will understand.

Spellbound slowed a little too much in a following sea and lost steering control when the stern was pushed around by a wave. I believe in less throttle than many into the seas, but in a following sea, he should have increased throttle enough to maintain steerage way. Into the seas, one should raise the bow sufficiently by moving passengers and cargo aft before increasing throttle.
@helicart

With tide and current takes no time to separate you quick and on top of that if you ran the ski at speed even if shut off lanyard was used the ski will keep moving forward for a while and the person in the water will pretty much stop immediately and start getting dragged by current and in that washing machine they had out there it's really hard to catchup or even see where to go to get to your ski. I been out wave jumping and spilt, but I had long big nice waves so quickly could locate ski and catch up to it fairly quickly and not have to deal with too much stuff.
