this. when I first got into luxury sneakers around 2011 the difference in quality between say margiela, balenciaga, gucci etc vs a nike or Adidas was night and day. these days it is negligible. all designer shoes of that time were full calf suede often with nice hardware, now they are derivative of nike or new balance

Start with Apple. If you have an iPhone, you should know they are produced in China and the factories have suicide nets surrounding them. Because their workers travel to the factory, because it is too far from their homes, to work and dont see their families for weeks. They work 18 hour days for little money. Inside information here: My father has a company for raw materials like cashmere, silk, camel, alpaca. He’s in Prato at least 4x a month and sourced materials for basically all brands and he’s been doing that for 35 years. During that time he basically saw all the factories from the inside. Prato has always operated that way. Big brand, you name them, always used to import pre made parts for bags and shoes in Asia and have them put together in Italy. For shoes they just glued and sew them together in Italy. He always said don’t buy the big famous names. There are a few true Italien brands that are still 100% made in Italy but these are not the huge brands you have in mind now.

I’ve heard of Chinese migrant workers in Tuscany at the beginning of the pandemic. Tuscany region had horrendous outbreak and there were whispers that their magnitude of outbreak was due to the fact that many of the workers went back to China for Lunar New Year celebration and came back to Italy. This is all speculation and I’m not sure how much of it is based on truth and facts. That said, I wonder if this worker exploitation goes beyond Dior to other luxury brands. Made in Italy by Chinese migrant workers…. Those are prototype lab. They create the new bag there, make a guide/video and sent it to the main factories in China and then China instructs Italy for the finish touches. Those labs just do a bit of haute couture for the fashion week. It’s been known for years but nobody has the power yet to call them out.

My aunt was a famous seamstress and worked for very wealthy families and her office was nowhere like those shown in the "atelier de creation" videos because if you work your office won' t be such a calm place where everithing is in order. The authorities already knew sketchy fashion houses were exploiting underpaid employees, it’s been first page news before! Unfortunately these poor workers’ conditions worsened as time went on, sanctions were imposed before; however the current situation requires way more than a fine. Those workers are basically enslaved!

More than a decade ago, because of recession (after 2008 crisis) craftsmanship, the core of italian manufacture, took a toll and Prato (a city mostly famous for the production of high quality fabrics) was closing its companies. Those companies have been bought more and more by chinese people who then transferred there to work with cheap materials and exploit Prato's fame for quality iems. It's been a scandal for years and italians had to find other ways to compete with those scammers. Everyone knew back then. Big luxury brands asked Italy for interventions because they also didn't want italians to abandon their craftmanships... but no one invested the money we needed to survive. No one helped. Well.. you reap what you sow. You want quality, you need to support it, especially if you can only find it in a place that struggle with criminal organizations, political corruption, past national debts, a lower average income than the rest of Europe and unfair competition. You don't buy from artisans but prefer to buy from overrated luxury brands? Then you're going to get scammed and we're not crying for you. Sorry, not sorry.

@PriHL I agree, this has been happening for decades. The big bosses always try to save money anyway they can. The news has been out there and people just haven’t wanted to listen. Now with social media more people experiencing things and videos being available, we’re now able to have some proof. Also, we’re finally getting legislation in Italy, France and in New York to hold these companies accountable. Because governments weren’t getting involved in these conditions and there were not laws, even if there was an investigation, and the company was warned, it would fall by the wayside because there was no follow up. So now with these laws, we will see just what the follow up will be, and if it is enough to hold the companies responsible. They’re saying that they’re not charging Dior, but this is part of Diors’s supply chain. This is another company that Dior has hired so they should be included with this problem. It is a deep well, I’m glad that we’re talking about it but we still have a long way to go.

I used to always be someone that thought that luxury was worth it because you're not necessarily buying something for what it's worth, but for what it's *perceived* as - it's assumed value. Ever since the pandemic, all I have seen is quality decrease across the board for all of these legacy brands. It got to the point that you're literally better off buying a mid-tier product that is built to last or at least doesn't cost a month's worth of rent. Until the quality starts to return to these bags - and by extension, the clothing on the runway; I don't see myself really dipping into designer unless it is an absolute *must-have*

If you're interested in mid tier or contemporary brands, try Dooney and Bourke Florentine collection specifically. Their leathers remind me of my time in equestrian sports, which requires very high quality leathers in the boots, saddles, bridles and other tack. I just never see that quality and long lasting durability ANYWHERE outside of horseback riding equipment.

I've seen a german documentary about that place in Italy years ago, good thing this is finally getting some attention! But this whole subcontractor way of doing business is literally everywhere in every industry, some more extreme than others. I myself worked for a fashion subcontractor once, that frequently miscalculated wages and used 95% immigrants, who won't complain because they don't even speak the language and their stay is often in the legal grey zone anyway. Unless something is being changed to the system itself, companies are always going to find ways to exploit workers to maximize their profits. Its time everyone stops tolerating that kind of criminal behaviour.

Not true! When I hear luxury I expect quality. The companies are greedy and looked for a way to make much more money than their products are worth. Why keep jacking up your prices if the product cost less to make. People started to notice that their "luxury" items were falling apart. Another thought. when i was at university i was working in a high end retail store. now when items arrived from the wholesellers/ suppliers the cost + gst is indicated clearly indicated on the system and the listed ticket price is often 4x the cost. most retail people would always wait for the sales to come before buying. now KNOWING that it cost Dior less than 100 bucks to make certain bag and sell it 20 to 20x the cost just makes me angry. thats just pure greed

I believe this .. I worked in high end contemporary wholesale and when I’d see the spreadsheets for wholesale accounts it literally changed my mind and perspective on what “luxury” is. A pair of $400-600 jeans cost $8-12 to make at most. Let alone wool coats, blazers, leather shoes, etc. that would go for $1000-3000 would cost $20-40 max. I couldn’t justify spending top dollar for pieces let alone designer. Much rather invest my money elsewhere.

As someone who works in advertising strategy and with brands in all categories (not just fashion), a big part of the conversation that is missing is about "pricing strategy." A big part of the cost of an item has nothing to do with the cost of goods (even though it can definitely be a big factor) but more so about association. I like to compare it to something like buying property. A house in one area and a house in another may be the EXACT same house down to every material used but the prices of those two homes could be vastly different. This is because there are associations with that particular area that you are paying for. Anyway, I love your videos and this is definitely a very juicy story, but I feel like the pricing strategy conversation is often not talked about among the public so I wanted to add my 2 cents.

This is nothing new. There have been independent documentaries on KZbin regarding this issue and various luxury brands, not just Dior. I stopped buying from Prada ages ago due to this particular reason. I don't think there's a brand out there that it's 100% ethical.

Pretty wild that Dior is not produced internally like Gucci - especially with its volume and price. But bags and accessories have always been a cash cow with huge profit margins - much larger than what you see on the ready to wear. Most of these brands hardly make any money on the ready to wear. Apart from that, the main reason for using subcontractors in the first place is that these brands wants to be able to do shenanigans like this, without being liable.

Most large corporate company’s do this. Old navy, banana republic, gap, have all had problems with this. The only difference seems to be how much money people were asked to pay. No one FORCES you to buy any of these items. It’s the consumer who is in control and either chooses to not purchase and not support or turn a blind eye.

I believe it is LVMH that truly tainted Dior. Dior in my opinion is one of the most beautiful and classic houses in fashion. Like you, I love the Lady Dior. I believe that the Lady Dior is the most elegant bag in the market. I am truly sad that there are allegations of workers’ exploitation. At my very first job in the fashion industry, I worked in the analytical department. Mock-ups were crazy! We were the official distributor of luxury brands in my home country over 15 years ago. We pay so much for luxury products only so the board members can have their mansions and other luxuries as the workers suffer. Boycotting all these brands will only hurt the employees even more. People will strangely be willing to pay extra to have a European make their product rather than someone from Asia. As for the working conditions. Shame on Dior but also shame on Italy for not protecting their immegrant workforce. Hello dear. It's been like this for years. There have been many journalistic investigations. It is believed that by buying Made in Italy the working conditions are correct but this is not the case. Italian artisans have sold their ateliers to the Chinese community which exploits its fellow citizens like and perhaps worse than in China. I don't think it's that different in Spain and France. You may remember the Chanel case. I think the only ones producing internally are LV and Hermès. all the others contract to third parties who in turn subcontract.

Gucci produces most of their stuff internally. More than LV. Further, it has been well known for years, than even the quality of Portuguese factories are now higher than the ones in Italy - which are Italian by name, but really Chinese factories based in Italy. Production costs for some things are now higher in Portugal too - even though Portugal was known as the “China of Europe” 20-30 years ago. How things change….

I remember seeing a documentary a few years ago about dodgy practices in the Italian leather trade. As far as I remember, it was very difficult to prove anything, because no-one would go on the record and they didn't have proper footage. No brands were named, but it was implied (again going from memory, so maybe mistaken), that there were big names involved.

I mean, I knew we could expect the bags to made with a huge mark-up (hello, that's luxury for you) but the fact that the workers are being treated as bad as those working for companies like Shein is something else. That's simply not good enough. Part of the reason I buy luxury items (mostly clothes, but occasionally a bag here and there) is because I believe I'm opting OUT of fast-fashion-esque ethics (i.e., no ethics) and working conditions and cheap labour/materials/processes. Yes, sweatshops are common in some parts of Europe, such as the UK and Italy (there have been many scandals involving leather treatment). Nowadays, if you want a real and beautiful piece of craftsmanship, the best solution is to support local crafters or have a fine knowledge of the products. This is important because there is a lot of dropshipping or pseudo 'Made in' claims where the only process is to 'put together' some pieces made in China (this is quite common in jewelry).
