I don't have insurance so I don't get to see a doctor. Which really sucks for me because I do have something that I need to get cured. But anyway, I can't tell you how many times I looked something up and thought that I was going to die a horrible death... I have learned to not look anything up for my mentle health. Hahah

You just never know. My family member begrudgingly went in for a routine physical per his employer. The NP did an EKG (all employees over 40) and said that it was very irregular, he might have recently had a heart attack and needs to go the hospital asap. She was adament and it pissed him off. He went to the ER after his wife heard the story and was admitted for a quadruple bypass that weekend. That 'annoying' exam and 'stubborn' nurse saved his life. He later apologized to the NP and gave her a gift.

Nurse Practitioners are wonderful. I've been going to family medicine doctors for years who never took me seriously. My mom got me in with a nurse practitioner and I have a diagnosis I've been trying to get for a long time and I'm being tested for things I was supposed to be years ago.

Yup! The big toe on my left foot was gradually changing colour and going back to its' normal colour. Started of baby blue, ending up being that very deep bluish purple colour bordering on black and my foot had started going a strong navy blue colour. Foot felt like lead and my toes felt like floppy sausages with just fat holding them onto the foot itself. Went to GP, she sent me straight to hospital. I was triaged very quickly and brought into the ER. The doctors took one look at my foot and huddled themself into a corner. They went into panic stations and started making calls left right and centre. I knew I was in serious trouble. Next thing, a doctor from the Vascular Clinic was down with 5 minutes of doctors dashing to the phones and had me in a ward pronto. The femoral artery in my right thigh was completely blocked and was shooting blood clots down into my foot. I was put on flavix, nuprin and had other blood thinners injected into my abdomin. It was caused by cigeratte smoking. I started smoking at 11 yrs old and this happened to me when I was 46, (I am now 51), I was a very heavy smoker and smoked the strongest cigarettes on the market. I was ordered off the cigarettes. I was off them quick smart. I spoke to my GP when I was discharged 2 weeks later and asked how close did I come to losing my foot. She told me "You really don't want to know!" That told me I was dangerously close. Been off the fags every since.

“Don’t forget there’s a whole person in front of you” Yes! I’m not a doc but as the son of a mom whose an RN and a dad whose a Paramedic with a combined 60 years of experience and being a Tech in an ER, I know enough to know that the human body is it’s own universe and just because one part is wrong doesn’t totally mean everything else is fine. I love doctors like you. Who look at the whole picture instead of just what’s happening in the then and now. Id love to have you as my primary

This story kinda makes me realize how terrible my primary doctor is. Last time I went to see him was for strong pain in my left shoulder/neck area. He spent the entire time looking at his computer, never looked me in the eye and actually talked to ME, and then just prescribed me meds and sent me away.

I had a sinus infection, and as always, at some point the snot starts flowing and I end up with a stomach ache from the post nasal drip. Kinda standard for me, since I usually get 2-4 sinus infections a year. This time, the stomach ache persisted past the post nasal drip. It wasn't bad, but annoying enough that it was affecting my job performance (I unload trucks and stock at a retail place). I tried to make an appointment with my normal doctor, but they weren't available for weeks. I opened the search to other doctors in my area and got an appointment for 2 days out. My stomach hurt, but didn't do anything different, still went to work, went to the gym, etc. Doctor checked me out and asked me if I had been pooping normally, and I was honest and told her that it had been a couple days. I think that this made her think I may have been constipated or impacted, but either way, the tummy ache turned into a CT scan, which turned into a rather, not frantic, but urgent call from that doctor. My mild tummy ache was a very large aneurysm on my celiac artery pushing against my other organs. Needless to say, I was instructed to go to the ER immediately and a here a few months later, I am back to work, to the gym (with my physical therapist's recommendations), and have a repaired aneurysm. I don't usually go to the doctor office for a tummy ache, doctors don't usually order CT scans for tummy aches when there has been a very recent source of snot... That was God's sovereignty and that doctor's intuition! Glad to be here....got addicted to this channel during my stay at the hospital! ❤

Reminds me of that really old Comedy bit. Patient gets to the doctor and pushes his leg. "It hurts when i push here". Then he pushes his head, "it also hurts when i push here", at last he pushes his belly and also says "it hurts when i push here". The doctor just answers "your finger is broken".

You remind me a bit of my doctor - I went in one day for a persistent severe headache and a bruise I didn't remember getting... a CBC and 12 hours later I was being diagnosed with leukemia. I'm forever grateful my doctor took the time to really review symptoms I hadn't even thought to bring up that day. I'm in remission now, thanks to an incredible team of doctors! I know this is an older video, but THANK YOU for discussing this more holistic & open-minded diagnostic thinking. I’m a 2nd year veterinary student, and we are specifically being taught to reject System 1 thinking (the pigeon-holed diagnostic thinking you mentioned - “I’ve seen these presentations of these symptoms before, and whether or not every symptom fits doesn’t matter, it’s definitely this”) and encourage System 2 thinking (what are my observations, what is the client concern, what parts of my physical exam are abnormal, what more do i need to research about these systems or symptoms, etc.). It’s SO important to not just assume the presenting complaint is the only one, or even the most important one!

I call situations like that a blessing in disguise! Great work Dr. Mike! My step dad had a very similar incident occur except he was just going in for a regular well visit. He had no prior history of A Fib and when they checked his vitals his heart rate was really high. They did an EKG in the office and it turns out he was in A Fib! Thankfully his doctors office was right there in the professional building of the hospital so they directly admitted him immediately. He had to receive cardioversion and was started on blood thinners to prevent micro emboli from forming which can cause a stroke! He sure got lucky that day!

If I had a doctor like you when I was first going through my diagnosis, I think I would be in a much better situation right now, health-wise. In the beginning, when I first started having symptoms, my doctors would only treat them and not look at it as a whole. They'd send me on my way with antibiotics every time, never ordering a single lab to be done. I was lucky to have been diagnosed when I was, otherwise my life would have been in great danger. We need more doctors like you.

This is a great video! It has helped to explain why, when I went to an urgent care center and THEN the ER three additional times in four weeks complaining of severe shortness of breath and a horrible cough each time, they jumped right into focusing on my heart. I had three EKG's, the last of which was a horrifying and humiliating experience, as they had the door wide open, didn't give me a blanket to cover myself, yanked my gown up and the person putting the pads on kept flopping my breast up (yes, actual flopping) multiple times to apply the lead underneath that wouldn't adhere due to perspiration, all while countless staff and other patients and guests passed by my room looking in. The whole thing was extremely frustrating for me, however, because I felt that they were *not* listening to me when I said that it felt like my throat had a cork in it. I had four different x-rays (one with each visit) of my chest and diagnosed me with bronchitis and sent me home. The third time in the ER, I said the feeling of a cork in my throat was more pronounced. I was in obvious distress and they did another EKG (all of them were normal). I had horrible coughing spasms that would leave me breathless, resulting in me fighting to inhale. After five hours of waiting, they were discharging me again, but this time with a diagnosis of pneumonia but decided to do a nasal swab just in case before sending me on my way. I was outraged that, again, they weren't listing to me or picking up on the _very obvious and distinctive_ cough. During the four weeks of fighting this, I kept trying to go to work because I was out of PTO days. It took four doctors and a bunch of nurses before an available (and very pregnant) trauma nurse requested to do a PCR test before discharging me. *Can you guess my diagnosis, yet?* I'll bet you can! *PERTUSSIS!* I was then contacted by the county health department and told to quarantine after giving a list of everyone with whom I had contact. My employer made an announcement in the lobby that I (they named names) had whooping cough and everyone had to help sanitize everything I had possibly touched. What a horrible and humiliating experience. I kept telling them it wasn't my heart. Now, I lose my voice several times per week and could not scream if I had to, even four years later. I am constantly clearing my throat as it feels like my larynx is scarred. *I really wish that they had looked at the WHOLE patient, Dr. Mike!* After all that frustration, I still worry about the pregnant trauma nurse who was ultimately the one who diagnosed me.

As the spouse of someone who has a major hearing loss, I appreciate you captioning the videos from here on out- it means I can share and enjoy these with him! P. S. I can’t remember the last time I EVER made a comment on a video, but this was important. Thank you

The bee is throwing up cause that's how honey is made. It's technically a waste product from the bees. Mmm. Bee vomit.

Not a waste product. Honey is their form of food storage. But yes, they drink nectar and then throw it up into honeycomb back at the hive. It becomes honey over time.

More fun fact, bees have more than one "stomach", the bee actually stores their honey in a different "stomach" that they don't digest nutrients in. So they regurgitate it but not the same way humans vomit. Bees r cool. 🐝🌼

My PCP is just like you. You both are one of a kind and so rare. He also does a thorough check list to find if it may be caused by other means.
