Great reaction! She was 15 when she sang Wicked Game. It was on a show called You Are Super, a singing competition for orphaned and disadvantaged children. If you like her stage presence and that tribal sound you should listen to Rechenka (The River) which she sang at 14. Diana was only 15 years old when she sang this song for the Russian singing contest “Ты Супер!” (“You Are Super!”) in 2018; she is now 19 and turns 20 in May. A few things contribute to the unusual effect of Diana Ankudinova’s voice. First, the majority of professionals can agree that she is a true contralto, the lowest female voice type, which is also the rarest. It’s even harder to find a true contralto than a true bass. A famous contralto is the American pop singer Cher, who many people compare Diana to (though she has said that she doesn’t particularly like Cher’s music, nor does she intend to cover it). As you can imagine, contraltos are few and far between. Diana is possibly the youngest one we know of in the world today. Some people label her as a “dramatic contralto”, a term applied to women with the deepest and darkest contralto sound. While this definition does apply to her, there would be no way to truly label her as such because it’s a term used specifically in opera, and we’ve never really heard her singing in that style. Diana’s vocal range aligns almost perfectly with that of a male tenor, truly remarkable…I’ve heard her casually slip into the baritone range and then effortlessly touch on the soprano high notes as well. Voice type and range aside, the most instantly recognizable thing about Diana’s voice is her vocal tone/timbre/color (they all mean the same thing). From a young age, her voice has always had that sound. It is so unique, so dark, almost muffled; the complete opposite of what we are used to hearing from female singers. Some people love it. Some people hate it with a passion (which is a little boring, if you ask me). Nevertheless, it’s that quality of her voice that captivates so many people and sets her apart. In interviews, she has always attributed this tone to her anatomy, such as with her vocal cords and larynx, meaning that she basically won the genetic lottery. The perfect combination of circumstances and natural talent have bought Diana’s voice to us. I’m 99.9% sure that she was destined to become something special from the start, given her backstory (you should both check that out if you haven’t yet, inspiring and heartbreaking stuff). Sorry for the info dump here, I just get very excited about new people finding Diana! She’s an artist to watch, now and in the future. Here are three reasons why Diana (the Queen of Goosebumps) doesn't sound human. First, she is a contralto, which is the absolute rarest type of female voice. It allows her to sing very dramatic/powerful, very (I mean VERY) deep, very dark, very rich. Second, she has a spectacular larynx. She's been called the vocal Eighth Wonder of the World. Third, she is polyphonic, which means she can produce multiple harmonics within her voice at the same time. This is what allows her to sound like two people at once. (more below) When you add all that up you basically get a person who creates her own auto-tune. She doesn't need electronic auto-tune. She IS her own auto-tune. And the effect when you hear her is totally mind-blowing. It's like she's singing right through you, like a sword straight into your soul. Literally NOBODY else on the planet has a voice like hers. She's not one in a million, she's one in eight billion.
