This revealing video reveals the shocking truth about the Royal Family's hidden sisters. Learn all about the secret members of the royal family that have been kept out of the public eye for years. Nerissa and Katherine Bowes-Lyon were the daughters of John Herbert Bowes-Lyon and Fenella Bowes-Lyon, and the granddaughters of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. They were the nieces of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, who was married to King George VI of the United Kingdom.
Nerissa and Katherine were born in the 1930s and were raised at the family's estate, Glamis Castle, in Scotland. They both had learning disabilities and were institutionalized at the Royal Earlswood Hospital for Mental Deficiency in Redhill, Surrey, England, at a young age.
Katherine died at the hospital in 1986 at age 65, and Nerissa died in 1986 at 71. Their confinement and the circumstances of their deaths were not widely known until the 1990s when their existence and treatment were brought to public attention. The revelation sparked a scandal and criticised the royal family's handling of the matter.

Mental illness is not the same as mental handicap. The sisters had the latter and Earlswood was an institution specifically for that condition.

@@ileanaacacostaacosta1813 The "Queen Mum" buried her severely mentally disabled aunts in cardboard coffins, with cardboard crosses. Only after Geraldo Rivera did an expose of the Bowes-Lyon inbreeding and abysmal treatment of these sweet unfortunate ladies did the RF replace those cardboard crosses with more substantial markers. Queen Mum & Queenie didn't even bother to give them a Christian funeral & burial. I have no use for them.

This is unbelievably sad and disturbing. I remember, as a young girl, visiting relations of my mother who had a profoundly mentally & physically ‘handicapped’ (the term used at the time) son. He lived well into adulthood and was cared for, most lovingly, from cradle to grave by his family. We visited often, and the visits stick in my mind as they were a little disturbing for a young child! It is astounding to me that an ordinary, by no means well off family, didn’t think twice about caring for an afflicted child, while a supremely wealthy family chose to hide away and forget similarly afflicted children. Your video brought back bitter sweet memories of family long gone and made me proud of having such good people in my family.

Royal families in the past often did this as illnesses, both physical and mental were perceived to threaten their hold on power (weak bloodlines and that stuff people used to believe in). John F. Kennedy wore a body brace and took oodles of painkillers to pretend he was healthy, same belief. Also the medical establishment of the time would have told them that this was best for them, to be surrounded by doctors and "their like". Since visits would usually upset the patients (when their loved one leaves again) they would have considered it best to not allow too many or any visits from relatives or at least would have advised against it. My mother and aunt both were kept in hospital alone at three and five respectively and their parents were no let through to see him since the children would cry once they left. Both were traumatised by this. This is unbelievable to us today but it wasn't just abject cruelty that made people behave like this, it was quite normal at the time. But it's horrible for sure

Well their father s sister married into the family first as a royal duchess and then unexpectedly because of her husband she became queen and in those times unfortunately mental illnesses of all kind were seen as a stigma but she as their aunt should have visited them more and bring her daughters with her yes she should have but the real fault here lies with the Bowes Lyons and the poor women's mom who should have been there with her daughters till she died

It is an awful experience to be institutionalized. Rules are strictly enforced and you are severely punished if you dare to break any of the institution's rules. Hi , there were 3 other girls admitted to the institution on the same day. Katherine and nerissas mother fenella had a sister Harriet and her 3 daughter were admitted on the same day as nerissa and Katherine, thier names were Edonia, Ethelreada and and Rosemary fane . I often wondered why documentaries I've seen on Katherine and nerrisa never mention the 3 girls who were cousins to nerrisa and Katherine, the 3 girls all had similar problems to Katherine and nerissa, it seems to have been passed down from Harriet and Fenellas father Charles Hepburn Stuart Trefusis.

@@LadyThunderbird63 They always conveniently forget about the Fane sisters as they can't bang on about awful the Royal Family treated them. There was "bad blood" in the Trefusis family. Lady Anne Coke (Glenconner) was a Trefusis and the Spencer family put the kybosh on her marriage to Johnnie Spencer (Diana's father) due to the concern about the illnesses affecting the females in the family.

Mental health and learning disabilities are not the same. The channel SBSK is a good place to learn. Whilst a lot of progress has been made in attitudes, prejudices about disability are alive and kicking, especially with learning difficulties and disabilities. I sense Katherine and Nerrisa had learning difficulties which never received any meaningful care. Hence the regression. In the SBSK channel, a family adopted children with learning disabilities from a country that put disabled children in asylums. While the children have transformed Mum is furious that their right to be independent and live a near normal life was abused. Regarding views of when Katherine and Nerrisa were born, not very family abandoned their disabled child. German families fought T4. Newton Dee was created just after the war and is in Scotland. I do not have contempt for the Royal Family but I have a healthy disregard for those who toady about the Queen Mother.

@@HistoryRoadshow I had never heard of Katherine and Nerissa Bowes-Lyon until I watched your presentation. It has disturbed me greatly. I am curious as to why you made it. Do you wish to challenge the disabled community re Royal Patronage of charities. For example, there was a move to remove the name Asperger because of his involvement with T4. I don't know where this issue went but this move came from the disabled community not the charities. I cannot undo Prince Andrew's BBC interview re JE&GM when he quoted his patronage of a children's charity as his exemplar. Or is your presentation a challenge to the noise about flowers, Paddington bear toys, queues, family rifts etc. The thing that struck me most about her funeral was that The Queen was a person of religious faith but it would seem that the principles of Christ was not shown to Katherine, Nerissa and their three first cousins Idonea, Rosemary and Etheldreda.

@@ileanaacacostaacosta1813 I have processed my emotions re this presentation and I will concede your assertion that Katherine, Nerissa, Idonea, Rosemary and Etheldreda are a Bowes Lyons issue. Specifically, the maternity for all five was Trefusis where Huntington Disease or Huntington' Chorea, may have been the genetic issue. The Queen Mother had means and all five had a mean existence. That is why I am angry. This presentation asserts that Queen Elizabeth II was distressed when the scandal broke. Two issues come to mind (i) a person of faith who failed to follow the principles of their faith and (ii) the charities for the disabled, who may or may not do something for the disabled community, chasing Royal Patronage. Good can come from this and I found my way.

I belive the Bowes-Lyon family, in earlier days at Glamis Castle, also had an heir with some type of debilitation or mental illness. This person came to be known as the "Monster of Glamis". Apparently he was kept hidden away at the castle. Supposedly he could have lived until the 1920's. And the Royal Family had no obligation to visit these girls. It is a very sad story, but the girls were nieces of the Queen Mother, and not members of the BRF. Why the Royal family should be accused of being callous and uncaring is beyond me, as they would have had no connection with the two girls, and the choice to place them in an institution was not made by the BRF. Even the Queen Mother was not the one making these decisions, or responsible for the girls, though she could possibly have done something to alleviate their condition.

Mental health and learning disabilities were not accepted back then and almost those with it were punished for being that way. Even some illnesses were not accepted either due to lack of knowledge and medical science. Unfortunately in those days folks were expected to act and be a certain way, regardless of their feelings. Speak out and be scorned. So it must have been even worse in high society if you had any kind of issues. I am sure even back then a lot of people suffered depression which is regarded as mental illness but they kept it quiet as to what would happen if they even mentioned it. Anything that was not understood was locked away.

I have listened and read a little bit about this case from other sources. I see disturbing parallels between the case of these sisters, and Rosemary Kennedy. I sometimes wonder what the origins of these girls' developmental issues were. Did they suffer birth injuries or something like that? I sometimes also wonder if they were really destined to be, as termed in those ignorant times, "imbeciles". Did they have more mild disabilities that were made worse through isolation, abuse in neglect? Were one of the girls, or maybe both of them, simply deaf and/or mute? We have learned of the effects on children dumped in orphanages in other countries, who may have had a chance of being either mildly delayed or "normal" if not for what the orphanage institution setting does to them.

I would go to SBSK channel and looked at the episode entitled The Family that Adopted Six Children with Down Syndrome (And One with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome). Some of the children came from terrible asylums. Whilst Mum is an army surgeon and has transformed their lives; she is angry that their right to independence and near normal life has been abused or squandered. That family is a good yardstick for your questions. I would describe Rosemary Kennedy as a person with Learning Difficulties. Her father was ashamed of her and her mother thought elite Roman Catholic schools should educate her. In my world, people with Learning Difficulties are educated to GCSE level, have technical qualifications, work, live at home or independently, have relationships, go on holidays and live normal lives. I am not sure what to make of mood swings as a justification for a lobotomy, but Rosemary Kennedy was institutionalised after the operation i.e. removed from home and hidden away. I cannot comment on the standard of her institution but the long stay hospitals for the "mentally handicapped" (as the learning community was known) in the UK is another scandal that is too distressing to discuss. Rosemary Kennedy's father was a known anti-Semite and indifferent to the persecution of European Jews by the Nazis. The reason I mentioned it that he was US Ambassador to the UK at that time. US Ambassador Matthew Barzun did a Great Lives with Matthew Parris (BBC Radio4) on JG Winant and both talked about Joe Kennedy. They give the measure of the man and I think that explains what he did. Social Darwinism or Eugenics was the thinking. The Nazis started T4. Rosemary Kennedy probably chafed under incompetent parentage and could not cope with the contempt of her educators. Hence the lobotomy which destroyed all her capabilities as a person with Learning Difficulties. I do think her parents and the contempt by society of the Learning Community have a lot to atone.

Hands down, this is the saddest documentary you have released. Innocent children, healthy or not, are far more important than “reputation.” The Queen’s response of, “it’s a family matter,” is hypocritical, being that the British public supports the royal’s oppulent lifestyle. Two lives were cruely thrown away, convenienrly forgotten; no family visits, new clothing or even a grave marker commemorating the truth of their existence. Why British taxpayers fund an already ultra-rich family, after being exposed as cold and uncaring, is baffling? May the forgotten sweet, royal girls RIP.

I would like to thank you for being an allay to my community i.e. the disabled community. Of all the comments to this presentation, only you exhibited humanity. It is nothing to do with "the thinking of the time", "cringe", "the beauty of the building" etc etc. A civilised person protects, cherishes and nourishes those that are vulnerable. You exhibited that and thank you. If you do have a moment the SBSK channels shows how my community thinks i.e. if somebody in my community needs help, we will help.

@@dramalover4961 With the money the family had, locking away their children, and forgetting about them breaks my heart and says a lot about their character. Years ago, when I was in nursing school, we visited a place (it was much cleaner and the staff was caring) for severely mentally and physically children. Parents visited, however, they truly couldn’t afford their care. That’s understandable. The royal family had the money, but chose to be cruel I live in the US, so I don’t understand the Monarchy anyway…please forgive me.. I’m blessed my children are healthy and grown. My daughter is 27 and an engineer. My son is 23 and a broadcast meteorologist. Not trying to make fun of any child, but my son could benefit from being around others not so blessed as he. Being on TV has made him unbearable. Lol I have had MS for 22 years. I’m blessed I can walk, even though I fall a lot and have “accidents.” I’m very blessed. Yes, I do feel sorry for myself at times because I miss nursing…it was a calling. We all have our cross to bear. If anything had to happen, I’m glad it wasn’t my children, even though I do worry one may develop MS one day. You sound like a wonderful person. Thank you for being these precious soul’s advocate. Even now, they’re still stigmatized. Hopefully, one day, these sweet souls will not be labled “Accidents", but as a reminder from God, that the world needs more compassion and less selfishness, plus, to remind us we’ll always need Him like helpless children, as we’re supposed to lay. our burdens at his feet. I will definetly check out your channels. My father has Alzheimer’s, and I’m an only child. He’s going downhill, so I need all kinds of support. God Bless You and Keep You!💓

@@dramalover4961 Thank you for the compliment. I’ve had MS for 22 years now. It doesn’t mean I’ll be in a wheelchair. I’m blessed that I can walk and drive, especially my new Mustang convertible. Back then, like those poor children, anyone with a disability was institutionalized, which is beyond sad. When government takes over care of anyone, their quality of life diminishes quickly. Those two little girls caused no harm. I don’t know, but it seems they were mostly well-behaved. No visits, new clothes or a marked grave. If anyone thinks that treating a human being by abandoning the two girls to people they didn’t know. Of no fault of their own. keep them out of sight. Tragic case of being forgotten by the richest family in Briton. That didn’t age well.

As horrible as it all seems, it's hard to judge them with current standards. My parents were born around when Queen Elizabeth II was and my grandmother about the same year as the queen mother. There's stuff in my history that I cringe about and my father says well that's the way we did it. There's things he cringe is about but his parents did and that's the way things were done back then. My grandaunt died in a mental institution because she was epileptic. At least they did get the girls care. It's certainly not what we would do now and it's sad and it's tragic. But that's what was expected back then to shut them away. Thank goodness we don't do that anymore. This is why we study history, so we can learn from it. Thank you Jon.

Unfortunately they were a product or their times. Nothing to do with them being related to the Royal Family. Sadly that’s how children with these problems were treated back then. In many families back then families couldn’t afford to care adequately for children born with these kinds of issues. I find it a bit unfair to tar the Royal Family for doing what was common practice at the time.

People need to remember that the Crown is fiction and the interactions are completely made up. It was their own mother who submitted the entry to Burkes Peerage stating they had died. The faulty gene leading to the mental disability was on the mother’s side and so not an issue for the Bowes Lyons heritage. The Queen Mother was not responsible for their care as she was the youngest of 10 siblings. It was the girl’s parents who were responsible for them and as the girls also had sisters I would presume they had legal responsibility for them in later life. Things were dealt with very differently back then and many families had children with severe learning disabilities put into institutions when they did not know how to deal with them. It was considered a stigma. Apparently the girls also had cousins on their mother’s side with similar disabilities who were also institutionalised.

I concede your assertion that Katherine, Nerissa, Idonea, Rosemary and Etheldreda are a Bowes Lyons issue. Specifically, the maternity for all five was Trefusis where Huntington Disease or Huntington' Chorea, may have been the genetic issue. The Queen Mother had means and was a patron of a disability charity. All five could have had better. I have never watched The Crown and this drama to some is a documentary. The stigma of learning disabled was broken by the ordinary and that the issue.

@@dramalover4961 yes I agree but the whole family had money including their siblings and nephew. However, I don’t think it was Huntington’s as that is a degenerative condition that usually shows itself in early adulthood and I believe these sisters were born disabled and they lived into old age.

@@littleannie390 I assumed LD, difficulties rather than disabilities. However, I checked an old episode of Lady Colin Campbell YT channel where she talked about an episode of The Crown which is featured in this presentation. Lady Colin Campbell speaks of Huntington Chorea which to me means HD. I have only seen HD once and it expressed itself as you have described. I thought the Bowes Lyons wealth was with their grandparents. I did not realise that wealth had travelled down.
