3:00 Let's not forget that Tom was born in an Orphanage, grew up DURING the GREAT DEPRESSION, and went to school for his 1st year literally DAYS before WORLD WAR 2 started, and went back every single summer even when the LONDON BLITZ of all things was happening and graduated just after WW2 along with the defeat of Grindlewald. It is no frakking wonder why he turned out the way he did!! And it completely justifies with his boggart being his own corpse too!! Edit: It also didn't help that the Gaunt's were extremely incestuous because of their extreme belief in blood purity. Add in that, and you got a child with extreme disposition towards mental instability. Though it didn't help that Merope used a love potion to "bewitch" a man to "fall in love" with her just to escape her messed up family. Not justifying anything, but it happened.

I respectfully disagree. Tom Riddle, Sr. and Merope Gaunt were legally married so just leaving her didn't terminate the relationship. He could have sought an annulment, but Merope was pregnant with his child, who like it or not, was his legal heir and most laws are strict about annulment if children are involved. Even if Tom, Sr. married after Merope died, the younger Tom was his legal heir and preceded any other offspring he might have. So he would have to explain to any future wives about Merope and how he left her and already had a son. It is interesting to note that Tom, Sr. never married (and we're talking about in the 30's when there was a worldwide depression and i have to believe lots of ladies would have overlooked his personality). So imagine the comments made by the Riddle family when young Tom appeared. I suspect he was unprepared for seeing them at all, probably figuring that they were dead, only to find out they were all very much alive and most probably aware of him since the day he was born. Imagine the anger and resentment at having to livie in an orphanage while his father and grandparents lived in luxury. Worst of all, i dare say none of them cared anything about him. They probably thought of him as the garbage that ruined his life. Remember what he told Dumbledore in the orphanage, I can hurt people who are mean to me. Sixteen years of anger, hurt, and rage bubbled up in him and i dare say, he lost control. It's a behavior we see repeated in him a lot.

@@ashwinsmagicandcardistry , everyone always referred to Merope as Tom Sr's wife, Dumbledore refers to her as "wife", the expression "run off" is a euphemism for got married in hurry, and in the 1920s when this occurred, simply being alone with a man for an extended period of time without a chaperon - the expectation was that you would get married. Plus, it is on the Harry Potter fan site. While it may be argued that legally, coercion is grounds for annulment, it's hard to do with a baby on the way.

@annaqaddams91084 жыл бұрын
@@ashwinsmagicandcardistry , it's canon, Riddle Sr and Merope were married. Dumbledore mentions it several time in the Half Blood Prince (The House of Gaunt). Riddle Sr. knew no one would believe he was under a love potion, so he couldn't argue that for an annulment. Regardless of how he got there, in the eyes of the law, they were married. Plus, 1920's morality would have insisted Tom remain with his pregnant wife. No respectable family would ever allow their daughter to associate with him afterwards, especially since they knew Merope claimed she was pregnant.
@annaqaddams91084 жыл бұрын
@@ashwinsmagicandcardistry , i think non-magical and magical law are quite similar in this case. Marriages that take place due to fraud or deception can be annulled, but that doesn't happen "auto-magically". Neither party ever presented themselves before any magistrate and pleaded fraud, so the assumption might have been that both sides were accepting. However, Tom Riddle's life would have been "ruined" ... this was after all, the 1920s. After Tom Sr. was released from the spell he probably handed Merope some money and left her in London. She remained, hoping he would return to her. He on the other hand returned to his village where it was well known he'd been married (for whatever reason). No decent family would have him. I don't think Tom (Voldemort) knew his father or grandparents were alive. He seemed surprised by Morfin's response that "he came back". Imagine that cheery, Riddle family reunion. They would have blamed Tom for ruining their lives, of the marriage that never took place, or the grandchildren that were never born (ignoring the fact that he was their grandchild). Tom was only sixteen, but being told to his face that he wasn't wanted was probably more than he could bear.

Harry and Voldemort were similar only in terms of backgrounds. Harry, Voldemort and Snape view Hogwarts as their home. Harry acknowledges that in the Deathly Hallows after seeing Snape's memories.
@yomommasofatthanoshadtosna34794 жыл бұрын
They both saw Hogwarts as home, in ways. They both didn't want to go back in the muggle world, Tom in the orphanage, and Harry with the Dursleys. But Tom Riddle wanted to use his skills and knowledge in a different way from Harry's. He wanted to learn about The Dark Arts and to use them to destroy all muggles, half-bloods and muggleborns. For both of them it was the only place that they weren't considered as weirdos.

Question : when the Riddle murders first happened, the Muggles of Little Hangleton were all convinced that the gardener, Frank Bryce was guilty of the crime. If I remember right, the police even brought him into custody for questioning, but then he was suddenly released when they could find no physical evidence that the deaths were murders. But everyone still seemed to believe they were murdered. We know that the Ministry of Magic found who they believed to have committed the murders: Morfin Gaunt, who Voldemort had framed. If Muggle Little Hangleton knew about the existence of the Gaunts, which they clearly did, why would they not have noticed that Morfin disappeared right and that time and blamed him? It sounds like Frank Bryce bore the stigma of being a suspected murderer for the rest of his life. I guess the ministry couldn't step up and publish the fact that they'd arrested the (framed) culprit because then they would have had to admit that the Riddles had in fact been murdered and that would lead to more questions that would threaten the Statute of Secrecy. But seeing as Little Hangleton would also have known about Tom Riddle's marriage to Merope Gaunt and his abandonment of her, it shouldn't have been too hard for the town gossips to establish motive for Morfin Gaunt, a lot more motive than Frank Bryce would have had, I'd think. That couped with Gaunt's disappearnce should have appeared suspicious. Unless the Ministry of Magic did step in and erase all memory of the Gaunts from the Muggles of Little Hangleton, which I'd think impractical. Hmm...
@abdirahmanidris2902 жыл бұрын
The ministry probably did wipe the memories of the town. When Pettigerew blew a muggle street up to frame Sirius, the muggles thought it was a gas leak as their memories were probably modified
@dakotaenloe80353 ай бұрын
Morfin never came around the village and everyone knew the Gaunts were anti-social. Maybe they didn't know anyone was still living in the shack. Plus, Morfin probably avoided muggles after being imprisoned for three years, since he lived next door to the Riddle family for years and could've killed them at any time.

If there was a film about Voldemort's early life and his mother's family, I'd call it "THE GAUNT RIDDLE"

Great video!! I know it really doesn’t matter at all but at 0:33, isn’t it his paternal family rather than his maternal? Paternal is his dads side and maternal is his mums side. As I said, I know it doesn’t matter but I just thought I’d mention it! Great video though Dean!!

Also what were Tom's motives for doing what he did. I'm pretty sure that Tom wasn't the only person born because of a love potion.

I wonder how dramatic the killing of the Riddles would be in Riddle: An Animated Story. Can’t wait to see it!
@josephwatson19314 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the animated story will never happen. It cost too much to produce. I've suggested to Dean that he try a radio play like Broad Stokes did with the Great Wizarding War. The tenth episode went up the other day. It's called The Unforgivable Potion.

Good one. I suspect he did not go to the Orphanage. He may have even gone with the Hitler youth and born arms against the United Kingdom.

I agree, I always assumed it was just vengeance and prejudice but the erasing his connection to the muggle world, I hadn’t even thought of that but it makes perfect sense. Something I think would make an interesting g video, how do you think things might’ve turned out differently if Voldemort’s dad stayed with his mom after she stopped using the potion. How different would things have been if he developed genuine feelings for his wife and preborn son before the potion stopped working?

He didn’t just murder his dad and grandparents he murdered his his dad entire new muggle family which meant that day he kid a few dozen humans
@micheleminor11064 жыл бұрын
Tom Riddle Jr. wanted revenge on his father for leaving his mother when she was pregnant with him maybe not realizing a love potion was involved. Also his grandparents probably supported his father in leaving Tom's mother since they felt she was beneath him in status since she came from a poor background. Tom Jr. saw his father is being beneath his mother since he was a muggle though why was his father even living with his parents and not fighting in WWII or was he injured in the war where he was physically unable to fight?
@lonewolfatari4754 жыл бұрын
My best guess is that Tom Sr. used his wealth and influence to avoid be drafted into service.

Imagine if Tom Riddle senior had took baby Tom from his mother and raised him. He would still have strong magic, he would have been raised privileged with a muggle family, he would have still went to Hogwarts and probably still been Slytherin.
@Boogeyyyman2 жыл бұрын
The Riddle Family could have taken advantage of young Tom. Tom junior makes business and influences clients with his magic without them knowing it. The Riddles were idi*ts to not include young Tom as family member and heir into their family. It just got them killed.

Tom not only Killed the Riddle Family line he also slew the Gaunt Family line because he framed the last Gaunt for murder. He murdered the Riddles with Uncle Morfin's wand and modified Morfin's memory so that he believed he was the killer. Morfin pined away and died from Dementors at Azkaban. Was it just easy or did Tom hate the Guants too?
