Senegal is poised to play a crucial role in the development of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). We are fortunate to have a new leader in Senegal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who is committed to addressing the major challenge we face within ECOWAS: the withdrawal of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali. President Faye is dedicated to revitalizing dialogue and extending a hand of friendship to these nations to reintegrate them into our community.
The recent departures of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from ECOWAS, following sanctions described by General Abdourahmane Tchiani of Niger as inhumane, have created a significant crisis. Despite these nations' firm declarations that they do not intend to return, ECOWAS remains committed to engaging with them. The leaders of these countries argue that the sanctions were imposed to appease Western powers rather than benefit Africa.
