We met up with the Believe In The Run Crew to do some running shoe spotting along the Charles River. From the speed Nike Alphafly to the trusty Hoka Bondi, we saw a wide range of shoes and had our thoughts and opinions on all of them!

The reality is that most people that run aren't shoe nerds. They go to the store, get recommended a Brooks, and it just works for most people, and that's what they stick with, and there's nothing wrong with that. Robbe's analogy to the Toyota Corolla is apt. Brooks makes shoes that are easily available, relatively affordable, decently comfortable, and quite durable. They just work for a lot of people.

This is actually true. My wife has run many marathons, including Boston and New York. She’s also completed a full Iron Man. She is not into messing with brands. She’s a Saucony girl, and doesn’t like most of the new stuff. I have 3 brands on my shelf, and that’s down from 5 unique brands. To each his/her own

there are many people who buy one pair of running shoes every single year. When the weather gets a little bit better in April, they go to the store where they always have gone and buy a new version of the shoe that they buy every year. That was the reason why GEL-Kayano was extremely popular. It was expensive. So it must be good and Asics had a market share of something like 60% in Finland because of the deal between importer and Inter Sport back then. Things have changed and all shoes are available but there still are people, especially men aged 45 to 65 who always tend to buy the same shoe and don't want any advice.

Thomas looks a little bit like Forrest Gump. Nike Invincible on a bike is a weird choice. The best summer shoe for city biking is a retro trainer with a stiff outsole and relatively hard midsole but with a thin upper. A shoe like Reebok Aztec II is good for that purpose. Some Saucony Originals are also very nice and if you wanted to be more hip and environmentally friendly, then Veja is a good choice.
