To give you some historical context, this is set during the European religious wars. Catholic Spain and Portugal are at war with Protestant England and Holland. Blackthorn is an English Pilot sailing a Dutch flagged ship. Spain and Portugal were the first to discover the safe sailing route to the east and kept it secret giving them a trade monopoly. Before the Taiko died, Japan invaded Korea but failed. This caused China to refuse trade with Japan. To get around this, the Portuguese act like middle men between Japan and China. Japans need for Chinese silk caused them to give some concessions to the Portuguese in the form of Missionaries and Churches. Not all Japanese leadership is favorable to the Christians especially because it brings loyalty into question. That's why Toranaga asked if Mariko would obey him or her God. Toranaga doesn't know exactly what Blackthorn can do, but he recognizes him as a variable that could change his situation, so he's interested to see what he's about. It's not the full context but should give you a better idea of what's going on.

Seppuku is commiting suicide by cutting his stomach because they believe where the soul is. There is also a second person occasionally helping him by cutting his head off so he wont suffer long.

17:09 A fief is actually the land he owns. His fiefdom. His uncle is basically saying his hold has been increased by 3,000 koku. A koku is a unit of measurement based off the rice a land can produce so by saying it's increased, it means the extent of the land that is under him was increased is my guess.

The holder of the fief must render some sort of service to the lord, and may also have to relinquish part of the harvest from the land. A rice harvest yields around 4.5 tons per hectare, so he's in charge of around 100 hectares or so.

The heir is a boy not a girl. The nun you saw talking with Toranaga is the late Taiko's wife (who became a nun after he died) but not the heir's mother. His mother (lady Ochiba) is now in Edo (which is Tokyo) a "guest" of Toranaga.

In this time period, a member of the Samurai class could kill a peasant with essentially zero consequences. The praying man who got beheaded on the street was a commoner who got in the way after being explicitly told to move aside and, well, that's what happens when you don't follow the orders of someone above your station.

No it’s Tokyo Kyoto was Japans former capital for basically its entire existence until Edo was made the new capital in fact Tokyo literally means Eastern Capital

Movie recommendations ( sick 2022) it is a good movie that is a slasher also please watch saw 5 it is also good and gruesome like the first 4 .
