Someone already said it but you guys shouldn’t be lost about him going home, he’s in shock there’s no malice in him doing what he did. If we cut to a funeral then that would mean an investigation has happened since funerals can’t take place until the body is cleared from investigation, he didn’t get in trouble because clearly it was confirmed an accident.

“There’s a lot of religious imagery” Yeah. It’s almost like Christmas is a religious holiday or something 😂 But in all seriousness-it’s meant to contrast with the diabolical evil of the clown. Of course, the climax of that is when the dad is hung on the wall like Jesus, and Art eventually falls into the pit of Hell.

Yes this is long, but this is my interpretation of the movie, and I think it's accurate. This movie was interesting to me. I saw it as Celine (Anne Hathaway) becoming somewhat unstable after her son's death (understandably so) but people's tone-deaf behavior and lack of empathy toward her pushed her toward what she eventually became. I'll explain below: Both Alice and her mother in-law both came across to me as non-empathetic snobs throughout the movie. Celine (Anne Hathaway) seemed like she was dealing with the normal stages of grief throughout the first 2/3 of the movie. However, after Max's death, Alice immediately came off as rather insensitive to Celine regarding the death, immediately getting upset that Celine wouldn't see her after the accident. Never did Alice ever consider that Celine was grieving and having a very difficult time. Even Alice's husband mentioned that Alice needed to give Celine more time. At Max's funeral, Alice was again immediately upset about the bunny being in Max's casket. Really? Celine lost her son and Alice was instantly upset RIGHT OUTSIDE THE CHURCH that her kid's bunny was in the casket?? There was never a moment of "well, perhaps Celine forgot," or anything. Alice immediately said "WHY DID SHE DO THAT, CELINE KNOWS THAT!" Then, Alice made the tone-deaf comparison about feeling guilty for her parents car crash, which clearly upset Celine. Then of course, at Theo's birthday party, Alice stopped Celine from serving the children plates for cake. Another tone-deaf and insensitive move from Alice. A grieving mother can find comfort in helping with some motherly duties, yet Alice wouldn't let her. Of course, Alice's mother in-law then made that insensitive comment to Celine that she should basically leave Theo's birthday party, further hurting the grieving Celine. Bottom line: Alice was a crappy friend. I don't think Celine killed Alice's mother in-law either. Yes, we saw Alice "discover" the box of pills and hide them in her home, but I think this is where the movie plays some mind games with the viewer. We know Alice had been committed to a mental institution herself in the past. That's no accident that they let the viewer know this. I think that scene was something in Alice's head. My reasoning for that is because, if Celine DID go in to Alice's house that night and steal back the pills, how did she know EXACTLY WHERE Alice had hid the pill box?? That would be an incredibly weak spot in the plot of the movie if Celine just happened to know where Alice hid them. I think that portion (finding the fake pills and then Celine stealing them) was all in Alice's head. Of course, Alice then goes off the rails and accuses Celine of murdering her mother in-law, and lets not forget all of the accusations Alice threw at Celine throughout the movie (even trying to assault her at the hospital), which clearly hurt Celine deeply and pushed her further to the breaking point. To me, Celine was completely innocent of any wrongdoing until she killed her husband, who had clearly become mean toward her and an alcoholic. After everything that I described in the above paragraph, Celine finally let her grief and built up resentmant toward Alice (because of Alice's poor treatment toward Celine in the entire movie) overflow, which is then when she decided to kill her husband and seek revenge on Alice and her family.

The movie was garbage. It might have been less garbage for you if you didn't ask questions every 5 minutes. BTW, Christmas = copious anounts of religious iconography because Jesus is the reason for the season.
