Christopher Ross, BSC is a leading British cinematographer who specializes in exquisitely photographed long-form narrative projects, while also presiding over the British Society of Cinematographers.
"Shōgun" (2024) is Ross’s fourth collaboration with director Jonathan van Tulleken. It marks their most intense creative experience to date. A journey of discovery bringing 17th Century medieval Japan to life for contemporary audiences, the story is told from the perspective of British hero John Blackthorne, a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai.
Ross recently worked in "The Great Escaper," (2023) a British-French feature co-production, starring acting legends Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. Based on the true-life story of a British World War II veteran who 'broke out' of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France.
Ross also collaborates frequently with director Danny Boyle. Their titles include "Yesterday" (2019) and the Indie Short Fest award winning TV series "Trust" (2018).
His other feature credits include: Sally El Hosaini’s "The Swimmers" (2022); Tom Hooper’s "Cats" (2019); "Everybody’s Talking About Jamie" (2021) starring Richard E. Grant; "Terminal" (2018) starring Margot Robbie; director Kevin Macdonald’s "Black Sea" (2014); director Mat Whitecross’s "Spike Island" (2012); "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" (2010); and his first feature with director Paul Andrew Williams, "London to Brighton" (2006), which earned several international awards including Best UK Feature at Raindance and a BIFA Award for Best Achievement in Production.
For television and streamers, Ross has lensed diverse projects including Sam Miller’s "Fortitude" (2015) and the iconic "Misfits" (2009), his first collaboration with "Shōgun" director Jonathan van Tulleken.
Ross earned a BAFTA® Craft Award nomination for Best Cinematography on the British television production Blackout (2012). Directed by Tom Green, Blackout also took home the BSC Award for Best Cinematography in a Television Drama and the Royal Television Society Award for Best Cinematography for the three-part series.
In addition to feature films and television, Ross has made a vast contribution to the world of commercials and music videos for artists including Coldplay and Take That.
