I am old enough to remember tv shows with cardboard walls and limited set decoration and furniture. Flimsy and cheap but the stories were what mattered. Has he ever seen a play? Does he sit there complaining that “that’s not real sunlight”, “no one wears that much makeup”, “the coloured gel lighting makes things too bright”…? In all art there is a need for the audience to suspend their disbelief to fully engage with the story. YES they used blue screen. YES they had sets built. YES it was filmed in British Columbia, not Japan. NO none of that matters (or should not matter). The making of, behind the scenes, is quite interesting. The ship had a small pool with a huge blue screen behind it for filming. Controlled and contained. Safe. Also, you should remember, we (your audience) are only seeing a small shaky image of what you two are seeing. If you want to blow up a screen shot and point out what you’re seeing that isn’t matching ideally maybe perfectionist could see what you are talking about…. But I don’t think this is the audience for that. I am here to see someone watch something I love for the first time and re-experience it vicariously with you. Complaints and nitpicks only infuriate me. I am not saying the criticism is untrue or invalid. Filmographers and cinematographers would likely agree with you. It is just insignificant for the purpose of a general audience.

The showrunners actually addressed this very thing in the lead up to the shows release. The muted colors we see in the show are historically accurate. NOBODY in the world had access to bright color-fast fabric colors in the year 1600. Those rich colors we are used to seeing in modern times come about due to developments in chemistry. Most were invented/discovered in the mid to late 1800's. As such the rich (and wonderful) colors we got in the 1980's adaption of Shogun and other modern depictions are historically inaccurate. A shame that Dunning-Kruger and thinking you know better than the showrunners that have made the news for their devoted attention to detail had to ruin his viewing experience. Because as @melodicroger said. Even if true, its an incredibly unimportant thing to spoil the show over.

@@KW-ps6hk "NOBODY in the world had access to bright color-fast fabric colors in the year 1600" -- I'm interested in that, because ancient Roman and Greek statues and art used *a lot* of bright, vibrant colors (that have worn off to the base material in the millenia since). I might deep dive dyes and paints throughout history.

Does your husband have any sort of disorder or medical conditions? The fact that the colors are bothersome for him made me think that. It's like someone trying to play a video game when the game displays epileptic warnings before you even play. Does he by any chance have a sensory processing disorder? Many people with that kind of disorder have a difficult time processing bright lights or lights that repeatedly blink or change colors. I'm just curious or rather trying to understand a little bit more. I meant no disrespect. If I were to ask your husband to try watching Ready Player One, with all the lightings & colors then there’s something odd if he has a problem with it. Either there’s a condition/illness effect or that your husband grew up not being able to handle distractions which could be part of his personality. I’m sure everyone has at least answered that in whatever school or psychology survey.

the guy could've saved the deep dive critique for the latter part, he's distracting the lady's focus and enjoyment; i can't count how many times i've uttered 'pack it up for later' to him in the first 15mins alone. if he continues like this, he's gonna ruin any intentional story buildup in whatever you watch together. i'd say he should focus more on the story unravelling than the nitpicking which only distracts himself. taking mental notes should've been a skill required for reactions and for post-watch discussions.

I've heard Sanada comment, in reference to female characters, that not only did they want to bring the accuracy and attention to detail from Japanese period drama but also to shake up some of the conventions for female characters in traditional Japanese drama. Instead of simply defaulting to learned conventions, but having them be more realistically/naturally emotional.

This maybe to much to ask, but next time please do the reaction without your husband. He has been totally negative. I can stand some constructive criticism, but your husband goes too far. I believe that the production crew knew what they were doing especially since Rotten Tomatoes gave a 100% rating. This was one of the greatest tv productions I have ever watched. I did give a thumbs up however because of the great acting and writing. This story is based on real people and the time period is accurate. Sorry if I offended.

Love this show. It does have some historical merit too as John Blackthorne is loosely based on the historical English navigator William Adams and Yoshii Toranaga is loosely based on shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, who lead Japan til 1616.

I hated The Last Samurai, which is indeed a White Savior story, but I don't think that is true of Shogun. Blackthorne is more of a witness to Japanese history, than an active agent, driving events. Also, the novel has some foundation in history, Blackthorne being based on real-life Englishman William Adams. Whereas, the character played by Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai was completely fictional.

To be fair I liked this show but I also felt the color was disgusting. I know that showing Japan with colorful pink cherry trees and completely orange sunsets is not realistic but damn, it felt very disgusting after playing Ghost of Tsushima, which was shot 100 time better, but also is clearly artistic oriented and this show is supposed to be more realistic. Although I can't forgive the blue hue we see in every cheap CGI, so I 100% understand your reaction. Same for the music. The Mongol throat singin was very distracting for a "realistic" Japanese show, especially when you know how many beautiful instruments and traditional music Japan has. If it wasn't for the great story, great acting and perfect costume direction I would not have watched it

Shogun is so fascinating in its portrayal of political intrigue and the clashing of different cultures. Hope you keep up with the series, it just gets better. Also, don't feel too put-off by the negative comments. The show's cinematography and color palette didn't distract me, but differences in opinion on aesthetics are fine. He was clearly annoyed, but I don't think disrespectful. The worst thing a reactor can be is dishonest. I would rather disagree than be pandered to for clicks.
