The levels to this show, man… 1. Fuji taking the pistols to avoid another man running his mouth and getting killed 2. Lord Toranaga spinning Yabushige’s army and dipping out bc he was in peril surrounded by the army of someone who can easily turn on him.

He actually went to Edo for his own army, after making sure this army knew who was their real boss. The book makes that clear but im not sure the show did. Too lazy to rewatch it and not sure this edit showed that part.

Natto is fermented soy beans. It is both slippery and stretchy like a combination of mozzarella and okra. It's smell is like an old gym shoe and it's taste.. well, that's also very much acquired too. But it's probably just about the healthiest food on the planet.

The food is called natto. Here in Japan we eat it all the time. To be precise, it is fermented beans. Put natto on bowl of rice, crack a raw egg and add soy sauce and you have the perfect breakfast with some miso soup. I eat it all the time! It's not a horrible food, foreigners that come overseas that like Japanese food can eat natto. However, there are some that can't eat it because of their genes. Like some people love eating collander herbs, but for me it taste like a stink bug. It's because I don't have the correct DNA genes to eat it.

As a foreigner who lived 3 years in Japan, I couldn’t eat natto at all. Too slimy and it’s fermented so it tastes strong. My Japanese boyfriend loved it so I tried my best but no way.

Been in several earthquakes. Earthquakes (and all natural disasters) is Mother Earth's way of remind us who is in charge. A small rumble and all our "high castles" are gone.

I live somewhere along the Pacific Ring of Fire. We get small ones here and there but then there are the bigger earthquakes every few years. It's really frightening when an earthquake hits in the early hours of the morning while everyone is asleep then the power goes out plunging everything in darkness as the earth rumbles. Worse, there are usually several aftershocks. I've experienced a few big ones in my time including a volcanic eruption. Not something you really get used to.

Someone else explained that Lady Fuji's father is Lord Yoshii Torunaga's Right hand man,thus her place in the chain of Nobility is far above Lord Yabushige who is only a vassal Lord to one of Yoshi's lesser Bannerman. Thus explaining why Yabushige had to bow to her as she pointed the gun at him.

@@Syntell the cannon balls with chains are called chain shots. The primary purpose of those are actually in naval combat specifically in disabling the mast support of the ship's sails. Using that in ground warfare can literally clothesline anything in its path as shown

There’s a video on KZbin of the Japanese national anthem. In it, you can see the Imperial Family greeting the people on New Year’s Day. And they bow to their subjects. I have not seen any other monarch do that, ever.

I think Kiku is also Toranaga’s spy. Remember what Yabushige said to Omi having his village a spy. I think not only Muraji the old man who speaks english and use pigeons to secretly sends message to Toronaga was the only spy but also Kiku.

Nattō is a traditional Japanese food made from whole soybeans that have been fermented with Bacillus subtilis var. natto. It is often served as a breakfast food with rice. It is served with karashi mustard, soy or tare sauce, and sometimes Japanese bunching onion. Smells like hell.

I am Japanese. It seems that some people are making a fuss about the lack of black people in SHOGUN. Several years before this era, there was a black samurai named Yasuke who served under Nobunaga. However, he was released from his samurai status at the same time as Nobunaga's assassination. Before him, there was no other black person in Japan. Also, in the era of this drama, only Europeans, let alone Americans, came to Japan. Also,There were no black aristocrats in Europe at that time.

The dish in question is called natto; fermented soybeans. Personally I enjoy it but its an acquired taste. It tastes like salty slightly smoky cheese. A brand to try out is New York Natto. 🍜🥢
