Just the fact that Ohtani is a good two way pitcher and one of the only players to get compared to a GOAT contender from nearly 100 years ago could be considered unique in itself. Add in the fact that Asian players aren't considered in GOAT debates (he's not there yet but he's having a great season and if he keeps it up could be in contention for GOAT) for any major sports league in the US and I'd say it's quite unique.

I think you’re right that two-way players were possible before, although I think modern medicine/training definitely made it more doable for Ohtani (and it remains to be seen how doable as he ages). Of the names here, I also think The Kid comes closest, but there’s no evidence he could’ve even been a reliever, let alone an upper-tier starter. But he definitely had the athletic godliness and charm.

I’ve been lucky to see him a lot since my home team plays in the division. That being said, he’s a great guy. It was during the angels game where he pitched then was relieved and moved to OF. Once in OF he held a convo with a little kid heckling him. And even tho the kid wasn’t a Angels fan, he lit up he was so excited. That’s a memory that boy will have forever. After that day I became a fan.

The funniest thing about Ohtani, to me, is that you literally couldn't create a guy with more star potential. As a player he possesses almost every quality you could hope for, even as a young guy. Tall, good looking, funny, and always smiling. It's like the baseball version of the movie 'Big' where a young Japanese boy goes to bed wishing he would wake up as the best player in baseball history.

To be the GOAT one needs to have a lengthy career. Shotime has only been in the MLB for four years. He played NPB ball for four years. The Japanese league is very good, but not quite as good as the MLB. A number of US players go to the NPB to resurrect their careers because the game is good. If the NPB was on par with the MLB we'd see more Japanese players here in the US and Canada. He is a great player and let's hope he stays injury free and can maintain this sense of excellence. I love watching this guy.
