My sensai has a very similar movement for osoto. Another important little detail that made a difference for me that he banged on about for years but only recently clicked and I see Ono using is a big circular motion with the lapel hand, pulling down and then circling back past Ukis chin to control the head and rotate the shoulders.

Ono's osoto gari is in fact an osoto otoshi the cinematic chain is much shorter and so it is faster. My son is using this throw in bjj with great success.

I can do alot of throws in sparring Judo and wrestling but osoto gari is the hardest to do for some reason. I also think alot of opponents see it coming easily and just step or turn back/aside/forward

i always love people who say something is outdated. It could be true, or it could be that you and your teachers just never understood it. Mizune wasn't doing modern judo, he understood things from the classical schools, passed down to him from Kano and his own studies. They were not about speed or primary mover strength. They were about structure, flow, and strength near the joints.
