I am a smallbore prone shooter on the east coast and shoot about 30 matches a year. All the folks I know in the Master class clean after every day of match shooting, that’s roughly every 200 rounds. They wet patch, wet brush, then patch till clean. Not a harsh process but frequent. I have well over 50,000 rounds through my Walther KK 500 and it still shows no signs of poor performance. I also shoot with guys who have shot fantastic scores with barrels that have over 150,000 rounds through them. Our cleaning process may be slightly different from each other but one thing is constant……We all use a Bore Guide

I live close to a gunsmith named K C Young. Hes a .22lr world record holder (or ar least was) I used to go to his shop and sit and bug him for info. I asked him one day about how many rounds it took to wear out a .22lr barrel. He said he has a Remington model 37 benchrest rifle hes had to re barrel twice. It lost accuracy the first time at 125,000 and 150,000 the second time.

In 60 years never worn out a rifle batrel. My gunsmith looked at my 25 year old rem 700 barrel 222 with a heavy 20" barrel and said " its worn and throat is pitted but if you give it a good clean and its still shooting ok it will outlast you" i have 8 rifles i can use in competition and in the club my scores are in top 5 shooters. And i still shoot this old 222. I often see guys get new barrels and rethroat etc etc. Ive looked at rebarrelling but i was usually me or loose action screws or dirty barrel not the rifle.

Very good video and I agree with everything you said about cleaning a .22 rimfire. It seems like this topic gets overly thought with concerned shooters when it’s really not that complicated. I think a lot of people over clean but hey, at least they are shooting 😀.

Just grabbed me a Ruger 10/22 how often should I be cleaning it??? I'm a newbie 🤣and also should I clean it before firing it for the first time??

Zweb-G2G Clean all new barrels. This will remove any debris from the barrel. I shoot for precision and accuracy and I clean the chambers after every shoot but not the barrel. The only time I cleans batrel is if it gets really wet or gets debris in it. Today’s ammo components aren’t corrosive like they use to be. By cleaning the chamber, say on a center fire rifle, you will eliminate any carbon ring from forming in the lead of the barrel/ chamber. Keep it simple and have fun with your new rifle!!!!

My Highschool rifle team .22lr went thousands of rounds between cleaning. I didn't notice any change in accuracy but maybe that was because it was only 50ft distance.

Elsewere... there's a guy that claim to have shot 45.000 rounds trough his rifle without cleaning the barrel and the accuracy still good... Is frustrating with so many opinions from so many experts contradicting one another...

Accuracy is difficult to define. .some are happy with groups the size of a dustbin lid

The Voodoo rifles are nice. Several club members own them. OTOH they don't shoot any better than my CZ 455 Varmint.

@@ikesquirrel just got a CZ 457 and after putting about 300 rounds through the barrel, I shot my best group with it yet at 100 Metres (109.26 Yards) with a 0.42 MOA 5 shot group and I'm an idiot beginner behind the trigger, imagine what someone can do who can actually shoot. The CZ rimfires are truly tack drivers

Just pull a bore snake through it initially. After that depends on the bullets you are using. I clean my .22s every 5,000 or so rounds.

@ncsam 000000 You are a moron. I clean my rifles when the accuracy degrades. Usually around 1,000 to 1,500 rounds. My Shilen barrel 40X will go much more. You probably have no idea what I am talking about. I have been shooting .22s in competition since I was 12 years old.

If any one cleans my matchgrade 22 rimfire rifles i keeel them. If accuracy drops off and its the rifle not me i will give them a light clean. If it aint broke dont fix it. Takes too long to restore accuracy and i dont use dirty ammo.

@ncsam 000000 dont care what bench rest shooters do. I dont. 20 years ago we would be cleaning our center fire rifles between each distance but not too many do that now. Discipline. I shoot fclass and field rifle 3 positional and occasional small bore. Club and interclub. My scores in fclass average 59.05. Max is 60.10 I been shooting 60 years.

@ncsam 000000 what makes you the expert and can say whats the right way. I target shoot at clubs with lots a good shooters who do not clean between cards. BR is just one type of target shooting. My gunsmith who has made a match grade rifle and 2 spare barrels for my 6.5x47 is a top class BR shooter and he did not tell me to clean my barrels that often. But then we usually discuss other technical details or what is happening about the place and usually not guns.

In the manual of my Marlin 925 it says you NEVER have to clean a .22 under normal conditions. But I’m not normal and I don’t like dirty guns so it gets cleaned every now and then anyway.My dad must have killed a million ‘coons and at least that many squirrels in his lifetime and he never cleaned the barrel on his Remington bolt action single shot targetmaster. He would run an oil rag with 3in1 oil over the outside when he came in but NEVER cleaned the barrel in I know 50 years.(I can still smell that 3in1, Oh how something like a smell can bring back fond memories. SHOOT SAFE!!!!!!!!
