I’m not sure where else to put this, but you could be the perfect platform to spread this around. I filled out the questionnaire and it’s pretty simple and straight forward. I thought if film companies start heating more from people like us, maybe they will continue to add stuff to their list of products available. www.thephoblographer.com/2019/12/18/ilford-photo-is-asking-for-input-on-darkroom-printing-habits/

7:10 I’m into cinematography and at one point a book I was reading about the early days explained how closeups on ortho film were difficult for cinematographers and makeup artists because blonde hair would look too dark and blue eyes would almost disappear. It’s kind of funny how we can now appreciate the look since we have options. Back then people were scrambling to get around that. Red lipstick also used to be avoided because of the lack of red sensitivity (resulted in black lips as you showed). I liked your ortho portraits for the record. I’m considering some myself. Just funny how perspective changes or can differ between creators.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
Yeas I read about that. I would imagine the Ortho emulsion today has better science behind it making it more useable for photography. Also portrait photographers had a nightmare with it many moons ago when using Tungsten Lights.

YO !! Takes me back to 1951 when I started Photography aged 14 ( Ha Ha -- do the MATHS -- ) I used to cycle 4 miles to a Wonderful Emporium in the Lea Bridge Road Leytonstone called 'Marston & Heards' where the Ancient Proprietor sold all kinds of Ex WWII Government Surplus Films, Papers and Chemicals and would blow the Dust off a packet before handing it over. I bought ORTHO FILM outdated at 6 Old Pence 2.5 New Pence a roll for my Mum's 120 Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Box on which I started and would 'black out' the Bathroom with an old blanket then wrap RED PAPER around a 40 W bulb and 'See-Saw' the 120 film through a dish of HomeMade Film Developer == The Dish I used to hatch Frog Spawn in and my Mum would make Tapioca Pudding in -- luckily NOT at the SAME TIME. 6:01 The reason the ortho film had more shadow detail is because shadows are made up of mostly reflected blue light from the sky, and ortho film is blue sensitive.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. Thanks!
@Nobody-Nowhere4 жыл бұрын
That really does not make sense, as across is just as blue sensitive.. the ortho just lacks red sensitivity. These comparisons are usually pointless, as its mostly about how and what you use to scan your film. Its simply and issue of correct exposure, development & a lot of it is about the scanning/repro process. I assume he is using a digital camera, and you probably need to develop your negs to fit that process.
@johnnytremp4 жыл бұрын
@@Nobody-Nowhere Acros is not just as blue sensitive. Fuji calls it orthopanchromatic, which is somewhere between orthochromatic and panchromatic. So the ortho film is slightly more blue and green sensitive, while being slightly less red sensitive than the Acros.

Super useful. As I was watching the results, I was surprised to see the Ortho results over the Acros II. They seemed a lot sharper and detailed, which surprised me. Then I saw you thought the same in your conclusions. Super interesting, as I was not sure about Ortho for generic work with its whole "red light thing". But now I am not so sure! Before this I was of the view that Acros could not be beat. Not so sure now. I wonder if the lens\camera had a big impact. Be good to do similar with say 2 x OM20 in manual mode with 50mm 1.8's on both. Great work. Thanks as always

Nice comparison! Do you use your OM20 in AV mode? The exposure metering is more accurate when you do. As a side note, I developed a roll of Fomapan 400 in Ilfotec DD-X today, and it actually came out really well! It’s the best developer I’ve used for years. 1:9 for 12 minutes, gave me nice negs!
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
No I used it in Manual mode Ian. I do normally use it in AV mode but as I had the Chinon, which is all manual, I shot the OM20 the same. My OM20 I have to +1 exposure compensate to meter as the meter is out by a stop!
@ianhand50064 жыл бұрын
Shoot Film Like a Boss Please bear in mind that the OM20 has two metering systems, and that the indication in the viewfinder is simply there to give you a rough idea of the shutter speed.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
@@ianhand5006 I didn't know that. Why does it have two metering systems?
@ianhand50064 жыл бұрын
Shoot Film Like a Boss There are two CDS cells attached to the prism, for manual exposure and for the exposure indicator in the viewfinder. There is a sensor at the bottom of the mirror box, which is used during exposure, to control the second shutter curtain. At speeds of 1/60th it uses the pattern on the shutter curtain. The idea is to give you the correct exposure at the exact time that the film is being exposed. The same sensor is used for TTL flash metering. “The Photographer’s Bag” explains this in his OM2 video. Most nearly all SLRs with AV mode, have a step less shutter which can fire at any speed, e.g. 1/142 of a second, or 1/856th etc.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
@@ianhand5006 thanks for your explanation. Yes I remember seeing the chequered pattern on the curtain. I think the OM10 a chequered badge on the front. I'll check Grahams video on it. Cheers.

Shadow detail on the ORTHO vs ACROS probably has a lot to do with its spectral sensitivity. ACROS has a lower fregquency spectral response than ORTHO, while also having a much higher frequency spectral sensitivity than ORTHO, which means it'll absorb more light over all... probably why lack of shadow detail? too much sensitivity in the blue? But ORTHO seems to have a much more flattering skin tone than ACROS (which I never thought I'd be saying)... I think ACROS is one of the best B&W portrait films, but that ORTHO is splendid.. I'd like to see it in artificial light to see how it works, but in natural light it's fantastic! Perhaps taking photos of people of a darker complexion might show the real difference in the films for portraits, which I believe someone of African descent will have a much darker appearance on the ORTHO. Might be really interesting!

A pan chromatic film is ( supposedly ) sensitive to all wave lengths of the visible spectrum but in practice it is actually least sensitive to blue light. An Orthochromatic film is ( supposedly again ) properly sensitive to a broader spectrum of the blue light. Blue light is what illuminates objects that are in the ' shadow ', that is why if you use a strong yellow filter the shadows tend to loose detail and texture and an impression of greater contrast is achieved. You would expect an Ortho film to show better detail in the shadows than a Pan film but you loose sensitivity to red light which it renders quite dark.

I just can't wait for the new Acros II . I had great results with the old Acros developed in 1+50 Rodinal for 12 minutes . I had very good shadow details with that Acros . T-max 100 and Delta 100 developed in 1+50 Rodinal are far behind the old Acros in grain and tonal scale , T-max is much to soft and Delta 100 a bit to hard with a "modest" shadow detail . But this all depent on the developer you use . I just hope that Acros II works just as good the old Acros in Rodinal , than it is bey bey to the films in my fridge and make somebody happy with them for free ......
