I'm 6'3 and I was tired of all the cars I'd being too small in the long run. So I looked around and found a 2002 base deville with 96k miles in really nice condition for 2k$ and it's been one of the best purchases in my life, the NS makes me crazy nervous but driving my couch everywhere is just too sweet.

@@hitek9too255 More reliable, but that's subjective, being it's still a Northstar. The head bolts are nowhere near reliable, the water pumps are still a nightmare, and they're still oil leaking messes. Also, half of the mechanics won't touch a Northstar no matter what year. It sucks, because when they're running, they're awesome engines for their time. Smooth, sound fucking orgasmic with Flowmaster 40's, have a very stout bottom end, and the 4 speed they're attached to is a tank (Something you can't often say about a GM FWD 4speed). I'd love to own this generation of DeVille with ARP head studs. My uncle owned a 00 DeVille from new. My first memory of that car was him pulling in our driveway and the car reaking of melting plastic and my dad saying it was overheating the entire time they went to look at properties. If I remember correctly, that issue resolved itself, but it was just the start. It ate AC compressors, burnt oil non stop, consistent electrical problems, had to have two new rads put in, ate belts, and blew it's trans after a flush (I won't blame the car for the trans). The problem's pretty much stopped twords the end of his ownership. I can only guess it became more reliable because he replaced damn near everything on that car. My uncle finally traded it in with 270K miles without any head gasket problems. Not sure why he kept it that long. At the same time, he had a 04 Expedition that never gave him a single issue tell he gave it to me with 278K, and then I drove it to 338K without any issues aside from an ignition coil. I blame those two cars for me being a Ford guy. Im not even going to mention the Northstar I had. All I can say, I know for a fact that a Northstar will run without any coolant for a VERY, VERY long time. Once it got too hot it would shut off the AC and 4 cyls to attempt to cool itself, but would still run. I delivered pizzas with a Northstar running engine temps I'm sure that were close to 300 degrees in the middle of summer. I gave up on it, had a loan, and the car was worth less than the repair. So I tortured that thing.

I currently own a 2005 DTS with 50737kms on it. You need to really keep an eye on the oil. Change the coolant to the green stuff not dextron. NS motors are excellent if you take care of them. Do not use synthetic use Dino Oil and keep it thick and clean. We live in Ontario Canada don't forget to crown rust proof it. It really does save the sheet metal. My family doctor has 2005 DHS with 390,000 kms on her. GM fixed the head gasket issues by 2005. Safer bet to get an 05+ NS. Know the cars history and stay on top of it. Smooth power delivery great highway cruiser. Just my two cents... I have the black raven paint job. Sharp family car. Cheers

Yes, it's easy for the average guy to drop the whole front cradle out of a 2 and a half ton car without a two post lift. Very easy. I have heard of guys doing ARP studs with the engine still in the car, but that almost sounds worse. Last time I looked, most shops charged upwards of $4,500 to stud the DEATHSTAR. Even when studded, the DEATHSTAR will leak oil like a lot lizard at a busy Flying J while eating water pumps like Lizzo at Golden Corral.

I think this guy was too hard on the Northstar. It was a spohisticated, high performance engine of that time so you just have to buy it with the intention of doing your maintenance just like GM told you to. You can't treat it like some boring ass, incredibly reliable Toyota. Although they make great cars, it's just not the same. The Northstar is just one of the nicest smooth running engines with a very interesting and pleasing performance character. It's modern, but it still has soul.

I bought an ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE 2002 Cadillac Eldorado ETC in 2011with 35,000 miles on it for $10,000. I also bought a $3,600 bumper to bumper warranty. The car drove great & was especially comfortable on interstate highways traveling at 70 to 80 mph. I didn't care for the "over boosted" power steering. I sold the car in approx 3 years with approx 83,000 miles on it. . During my ownership the warranty more than paid for itself !! I sold it to a lady for $5,600 & I made sure to transfer the bumper to bumper warranty which still had about TWO months & several thousand miles left on it. She called a few months later & said the engine overheated & couldn't be saved. Unfortunately she was JUST out of warranty when she realized how serious the problem was. I felt really bad & to this day I wish I would have called her 1 to 2 weeks before the warranty expired to see if everything was okay...... I would have quizzed her thoroughly about the car (engine especially) & if there was any hint of problems, I would have told her to drop everything & take it to the dealership & let the warranty do it's job..... Enter your hand gun / massage scenario....yeah it turned out bad in that case....

I've had 4 northstars and NEVER blew any of them up. It's all in the maintenance. You need to do regular fluid changes, use OEM parts, and drive them regularly. These are performance engines, my bets are your grandparents went to the local oriellys for service. You need a real tech who knows these motors inside and out. Put 93 in them and drive them hard, they love it. 04.5+ generally have had all of the bugs worked out, stay away from the earlier ones. If I were you I'd do some research before you knock a car you've never personally owned.

@@RecycleRepubHub Thanks for the response. I was considering this car since its cheap, but I'm not sure about regular maintenance and still having issues is for me. Oil leaks can be fixed. Just gaskets are old. The rust I can't explain unless you live in the rust belt or the car came from rust belt. I would work on the major codes and leave the rest. Find out which are more needed. I love classic Cadillacs, but I feel like the 2000-05 Devilles really missed the mark looks-wise as they are really washed-out versions of their predecessors. The headlights are too fat, the wheel wells are round instead of rectangular with no skirting, the rear of the greenhouse is too sloped giving a less formal look, the C-pillar is thinner and stretched and doesn’t look great if a vinyl or cloth top is added, it lacks badging, cladding, chrome, and adornments, the profile is kind of stubby, and, worst of all, it lacks the trademark vestigial tail fins and proper vertical tail lamps that are a Cadillac staple. I really disliked these when they came out, but new cars are so bad these days I’ll admit I have warmed up to these a bit over the years.

I'm cackling over the people actually believing GM fixed the head stud problems. They did get progressively better in the later years, but far from good. They're great engines when they run, and hell, some of them end up being reliable, but the exception is not the rule. Go to any LKQ and count how many mint condition Northstar cars are out there, even newer models. It's an absolute fucking shame. GM started this garbage with the HT4100 and just made it worse as the years went by, completely ruining the Cadillac imagine. Oh well, at least they're using the 3.6 reli... nvm. GM didn't learn.
