I own a 2008 V8 limited 215k miles and it’s the BEST vehicle I’ve owned. The 4th gen V8 is pretty much a baby Land Cruiser 100 series same engine same full time 4WD system for a fraction of the price. Not to mention a VVti LC100 only came out in 06 and 07 and they’re pricey and harder to find.

In 2022, my 2006 V6 Limited...RIP, blew a gasket at 150k miles, frame rusted to hell, still the best car I've owned

Unfortunately The V8 in the 4th gen 4 Runner was no better. You would have to fix that timing chain belt!

Zach, you should look into Land Cruiser lineage and see how the 4Runner ties into “Prado” or “Light Series” Land Cruiser bloodline. Other hidden Land Cruiser Prado vehicles? FJ Cruiser and Lexus GX. Matter of fact, the newest American Market Land Cruiser IS a Prado! You can only get the full size Land Cruiser now in Lexus LX form. Fun stuff!

4runners are very durable. This generation was the first and only new vehicle he has ever purchased SR5 V8, went 250k miles before he needed a larger vehicle and got an Excursion 7.3 with 200k miles. My other uncle had a 3rd gen 4runner that he bought used, at 450k-ish miles, the front driver axle check out and the wheel fell off. He said it was still reasonable controllable to get over off the road.

The only thing that will do these in is rust. These are infamous for rust if you live anywhere that salts the roads.

@GeeEm1313 he did, he adopted 2 kids and needed a 3 row vehicle, he also owns an equipment rental company and uses it for work deliveries on special occasions (like if heading to a place he wants to go so the fuel is tax deductible). He has had it for 14 years and says he will never get rid of it, even though the kids are both off at school and he is getting ready to retire.

Spacers enhance the ride quality, and this example with the after market headlights look gorgeous. Love the tires and I’m assuming 285 and can’t wait to get rid of the 265 on mines. Resale value is on the rise!

Dunno, but I'd prefer a J100/J200 Land Cruiser over the 4Runner. The latter feels more rugged than the Land Cruiser models, so in a way, it could be more suitable to drive on suitable terrain.

I think the manual transmission was discontinued towards the end of the 3rd generation's production run (around 1999-2000). Manual transmissions in SUVs were getting rarer by then.

Correct! I have a 98 5spd manual 4x4 V6. Before this I had a 96 4spd auto 2wd. They both ride much rougher than the 4th gen 4runners I have been in. I’m not a 4th gen expert, maybe one could chime in but I know the changes made to the suspension for better ride quality were extensive and effective.

I'm going to make a prediction right now. I'll come back at the end of the video and edit my response if it turns out that you've changed my mind. But I've got to say right now, this Toyota 4Runner that you are testing right now is, in every conceivable possible way, better than any of the new stuff that Toyota has put out right now. Especially that plastic land cruiser. I'm not going to lie, the new Land Cruiser looks beautiful because I like the Retro styling. But it is proof that beauty is only skin deep. I know that it's not just toyota, that it's the industry in general, but the enshitification of cars across the range from every brand and every model is an endemic problem in the North American market.

Automatic "like" for reviewing a 17 year old vehicle. The average driver would not know (or care), but these old body on frame, 4WD trucks (4Runner, Pathfinder, Sequoia, Armada, Land Cruiser etc.) of the past 10 to 20 years are LOVED by a large segment of 'old-school' drivers who don't care about, blind spot monitoring, 40 inch dashboard screens, 25 cup holders, vagina warmers, and computer controlled this and that. If I hit the Powerball Lotto tonight, there is NO other vehicle I would want or take in trade for my 2015 with 122,000 miles on the clock.

I like the Land Cruiser and the Toyota 4 runner. However Land Cruisers are expensive where I am at currently. If I manage to find a Land Cruiser from the 90s at good prices. But most likely it will be the 4 runner.

Toyotas are ONLY BULLETPROOF if you BABY THEM. Yes, they are tough as nails even when neglected. But in order to get to those 200,000-400,000 mile marks you have to be willing to service and dump the money in one. My opinion Toyotas (and Hondas) are worth every penny thrown at them especially if an example has been a damn good car/truck.

Still kind of surprised that Toyota offered a V8 in 4Runner since they were trying for years to make that engine a Tundra/Sequoia exclusive motor. Guess North American dealers must have screamed at Toyota to stuff a V8 in due to slowing sales or to compete with the Ford Explorer.

Not exactly correct. Although they both share platforms (TNGA-F platform), the LC300 is more directly related to the Lexus LX600 than the Sequioa.

The J300 Land Cruiser shares a platform but has a completely different body than the Sequoia. The Sequoia is a Tundra pickup that's been SUV-ized whereas the J300 Land Cruiser shares its body with the Lexus LX600. The Sequoia has a 10-inch longer wheelbase than the LC300/LX600 and is slightly wider with a longer body.
