What happens if we put a budget (cheap) break barrel up against a high quality (expensive) break barrel? In this video we use the SIG ASP20 and the Beeman RS2 Dual Caliber but the results would be similar with any high end break barrel vs a lower cost option. Obviously we know the more expensive gun should win but by how much and is it worth the extra money? For some airgun shooters the extra cost would not make their experience any better but for those that want to hunt at farther ranges or compete with their airgun the extra dollars can make a BIG difference.
In this competition both the Beeman RS2 and the SIG ASP20 had the Hawke 4-12 power Airmax scope so neither gun had any advantage as far as the optic. WE shot them at 30 yards and we shot them over the chronograph. The SIG ASP20 lived up to its price tag and made an impressive group in 20-25MPH winds it also delivered about 21 foot pounds of energy. So the ASP20 won in both the accuracy and power categories. It also pulled ahead in the build quality but ... of course it did after all its about $300 more than the Beeman.
Bottom line, watch the video and you decide if the budget rifle or the high end gun is the best option for your style of airgunning.

ive got the beeman, non dual caliber .177, and when i first got it i thought it was junk, it would shoot a 12 inch group at 25 yards or sometimes completely miss the target. Then i realized the hinge was loose, causing the barrel to droop randomly without me even realizing it. So i removed the two bolts holding the stock, which gave me access to the hinge bolt which i tightened a good bit. After this, with the stock scope, i was able to dial it in, and this little budget rifle can do 2" groups at 25 yards and the stock scope has held true now for over 300 rounds and being tossed around on the bench seat of my work truck. Anybody reading this, remember to tighten up the hinge bolt before you dismiss the beeman as inaccurate.

Another thing you neglect in this video is to try multiple ammo with each gun. I find that when using my $80 Gamo varmint I can sink 2-3 pellets into the same exact hole when using the Luxor Cu pyramid ammo. Whenever I use crossman lead pellets they seem to be hit or miss. I notice the Luxor’s fit perfectly into the barrel to the point you have to press it in. It makes a really good deal on every pellet. $17 for 150 is kind of expensive. But the $4 tin of lead pellets only fits snuggly and makes a good seal 50% of the time. Edit: I find when using my friends airgun thar each gun likes a certain ammo much more than others

Some airguns shoot way different with different ammo. I had to take 3 different pellet types to get one that works for my particular gun. Even the same model gun can be ammo finicky. I fair comparison for accuracy is to figure out what type of pellet works best for each gun and then compare groups.

That is a very good point. For me it adds to the enjoyment of shooting airguns because whenever you are shooting a new or different one you need to spend some time testing a bunch of different pellets to find which ones group well. You also need to practice a light, consistent hold and get comfortable/familiar with the gun to get the best results. Checking your scope mounts are secure and stock screws are tight is a good idea once in a while too, the spring vibration can work screws loose over time and your shot groups can start opening up.

One thing to think of is exactly what you said. The Sig has no optic or iron sights. At least with the Beeman you can shoot straight out of the box. The Sig is going to take another $100 minimum for an optic. So that $440 just went to $540. I have Beeman and it seemed after 1000 or so pellets that the accuracy got a bit better. Definitely not a tack driver but better. Awesome video as always!

I have the HWs, Diana, AA, Spring guns etc., distance, knowledge makes a difference!~ At Ten meters? Don't matter! I have found on some low end verses high ends with open sites, not scoped to be more accurate, matter of opinion! I have put out the big bucks and have some much less expensive over many years of fun and pleasure, just to try and make things work based on quality! As stated many times by many! A person gets what they pay for! After over fifty years of air gunning to day is like nite and day! Good day!

One is for pest control and competition, the other one is for fun. I understand it perfectly: for plinking i have a super cheap, super fun umarex nxg apx: weak but strong enough to hit the target, full of safety measures for kids, able to shoot BB too and can store it by the dozens, so i only have to pump it to shoot - and at 10-20meters 2-3 pumps is more than enough.

I used a 99 dollar Beeman silver kodiak dual caliber to hunt 6 acres completely out of squirrel. Never missed a shot out to 45-50yardswith the .22cal barrel on it. I have a video of me shooting a squirrel on the move through the branches, followed by a bunch of the ones I killed, mostly head shots. Those Beeman can be very accurate. Just takes learning how to shoot the particular gun. I have a 345 dollar gamo magnum and always choose to pick up my 169 dollar hatsan 125 instead. The hatsan is more powerful than, and more accurate than the gamo magnum at a fraction of the cost. And I have over 1000 rounds through both. Makes me disagree that expensive guns are a lot better than cheap ones.

The best budget gun 199.00 umarrex octain elite 825 fps 14.3.very accurate and shoots the long ball great. Biggest pile of s... T. Ruger Magnum. 400 fps lower than claims. Heavy but accurate. Vibrates. Theses are all 22 cal. Benjamin and the Gamos are real good but the rws models are the best from my experience.Haven't tried sig yet. Storgers are ok, Gamos light and accurate, Benjamin comes with best scopes and quiet. I have had several models of each brand. 400 ish RWS... 300 ish Gamo.... 200 ish U marex..... Ruger exaggerates the most. Hatson out performs everyone but don't last . Both of mine broke a few months after I got them.

I don't believe the "even with having two of the same gun, they'll most likely favor different ammo" thing. They're the exactly same in every way and there's no way they'd both be picky with ammo like that. It comes down to the operators skills/shooting style.

I just bought a Retay 125X in .177 (made in Turkey), it is cheap and the accuracy is very good. Open sights it does 15mm to 20mm grouping at 20 meter, and that is out of the box, first target I was shooting with it. You should try it. If I get sponsered with expensive airguns I will take it as well. For that matter, I will take cheap ones also.

Nice video. I was always curious just how much more accurate pricey air guns were compared to the cheaper ones, and your summary was concise but gave great info. I'm really happy with my RS2. My grandpa gifted it to me after picking it up at a rummage sale for like 40 bux and it still nails about a softball sized group at 80 yards and the optics are clear and stable. I've shot it in below freezing temps and humid weather and the sights don't fog up or lose zero. It's a hell of a deal for the package, especially for someone getting their first air gun. I really like the feel and look of the wood stock compared to the plastic stocks on most rifles, especially in the lower price range. My only complaint is that it's LOUD. That SIG seemed whisper quiet in comparison.

Beeman RS2 is an obvious winner here. Two barrels (for two calibers) and a nifty (illuminated fiber dots) open sights. Add that 4x32 scope, and you're good to go wherever you like - paper targets at the range, plinking, pest control (rats, crows...), hunting small game (rabbits, jackrabbits, pigeons, even pheasants...) up to 50 yards. At larger distance than that, you'll need much more power (which none of these 2 models can deliver, anyway)...

@@TheWingnut58 Crosman is made in China my man. Sheridan is and has been, lik goe Benjamin, owned by Crosman. It's unfortunate, but true, they share many of the same parts, same factory in Shenzhen, China, but, there is still quality, adherent to the standards; basically you're getting better quality with the brands that you've known as quality for years. China makes these, but the QC isn't just, well what you'd expect from the stereotypical chinese mass production factories. I would also say, Sheridan is something you should look into, as that became Benjamin Sheridan (merger or buyout, by Benjamin), decades ago at least, then it all was bought out, by Crosman, who owns all of it. As for the QC, it's very good for what you will pay for Crosman stuff. Yes, the larger the pricetag, the better for newer things, is just a fact. You always can count on that being how it is, but (and it's a big one), there is two to three stage QC, with the products imported. So, China makes it, and it's the same place they have now been made for decades, they check it for QC, so it isn't rejected by the American companies (Crosman is an American company, but nothing has been made here for a long time now). It's then checked by Crosman, and held to the standards you'd expect from the various brands. It really sucks they aren't made here anymore, but, as long as quality control doesn't start becoming worse and worse - like the American Classic series, compared to the original variations - you're going to get what you pay for regardless of where. The company that has been producing all of the brands you named, as well as Beeman, and a few others, is basically held to a standard. TL;DR: If you buy something that's 30-50 bucks at walmart, it's probably not going to be at the level of quality, that you'd get from something you'd pay a couple hundred for at the same place, be it walmart, or dedicated airgun retailers like Pyramyd. It's basically getting what you pay for, but the QC is filtered via multiple entities, so you're still going to get something good. Sorry for the long response, and, it's 5 months late because I just found this channel the other day. Got to say, this is one of the best airgun centric channels there is, and, highly undersubbed. Much love, happy shooting.

@@TheWingnut58 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosman#:~:text=Benjamin%20and%20Sheridan%20were%20acquired,a%20youth%2Doriented%20lever%20action. also, here's a link to that aspect, regarding Benjamin buying out Sheridan in '77, and Crosman buying Benjamin in 1992. Also, it varies quite a bit by make and model, which I forgot to mention in my other response. It's made to standards in the US, for many different ones, however some models are still made in the US, but that is on a pretty steady change to be "built to specifications and standards". Doesn't matter where they're made, because multiple levels of QC, and, the fact the company cares enough to differentiate products and hold up the standards, just means that quality control is more rigorous. I collect vintage air rifles, gallery pneumatic rifles, and build custom items as well, so, all in all, yeah it'd be wonderful if things were how they used to be, but, at least Crosman is still keeping up the standards, for all the brands they own. Hope all this helped, or you found it interesting. Cheers, and happy shooting my man.

The extra $300 buys you a Sig that comes from the factory ready to shoot out of the box with high perfomance. The Beeman RS2 on the other hand comes totally oiled and gunked up from the factory. It has to be cleaned and then properly lubricated and broken in 500 to 1000 rounds before you see the accuracy and FPS the Sig is giving you. In the long run you spend $300 more for single caliber gun which is not a better deal in my opinion. If you have patience and don't mind a little bit of work the Beeman is the way to go. Grease the main spring with Moly. Lubricate the piston seals with silicone spray. Put a 6mm o-ring on each barrel at the manifold connection to prevent blowby. Then you will outperform the Sig!

Both guns performed very well considering the range. 27.5m is no joke for an air rifle, especially a break barrel.

Great video Ben! If I was for sure I could be that accurate with the sig I'd probably buy it. I've had the Chinese Beeman and ended up giving it away. Mine was just junk when it came to accuracy. My nephew is happy with it and can do about as well as you did with it. I'm probably the worst shot there is with a piston or spring gun. I've never had a quality break barrel before ; however my brother had a Diana 48 and I did ok with it. Keep the videos coming and I'll be watching for sure and im not at all new to airgun shooting.

I have a Beeman sportsman RS2 series in .22 only. It shoots much better than your gun but took nearly 1500 rounds to break in. Screws on forearm holding gun to stock need to be tightened down. Gun holds 3/4 inch groups at 30 yards.

Interesting! The only break barrel that I have ever liked is the gamo swarm Magnum. I'm under the impression that you have to find the pellet that matches your gun to get accuracy. So shooting the same pellets in each gun would not be a fair accuracy comparison. In my gamo it is accurate with the gto or slugs over 28 gr. Anything else and I can't hit a barn. I usually shoot 32-35 gr slugs in dish base or boat tail. 2 other break barrels are the same way. I only have one that will shoot lighter pellets. I can notice that all will only shoot certain pellets but jsb is the only brand that is somewhat accurate in all.

That sounds like something I need to try. I think that the Magnum does not have enough power to push that much led. I might just have to do some testing....

I get it that the muzzle velocity is greater at lower altitude but might that be offset against the greater air resistance on the way to the target? At higher altitude the lower air density would offer less drag on the pellet but is that a significant factor? That would be an interesting experiment.

I'm as new as new can be with air gunning. I bought two the Gamo Raptor Whisper in .177 and the Ruger Airhawk Elite II also in .177. Both as you know are break barrels. Sadly I have yet to shoot either one, as I bought them as Christmas presents for both wifey and I, and we have to wait for Christmas to shoot them, currently it is 10/25/21. Anyways, will be interesting to see how they do as we live at about 6500 feet above sea level. Anyone have any comments or suggestions regarding these two air guns?

the beeman is the rifle is crap or it does not like the pellets you shoot, i can get better groups with my smk sx38 and the price of my rifle to the door £200 to my door into my hands, 53 years of shooting HW rifles in 177 but just last year in 22cal, so i bought a xs38 with the walther barrel in 22 cal and it like rws super domes, and i was in for a shock it shoots great, after i cleaned the barrel and it was less and less smoke, and easy to cock and load and very little noise. and the trigger is a layed back trigger its very good all most a HW but a very close to the hw, and the more i use it the better it gets, but a good video, depends how much you spend, no i do not like that idea and very soon i will get and xs36 and a b1 and have heard remarks about the smk b1, i have had a go with one and at 10ftlbs in 22 it was tuned but not for power, but to tune just so its smoother and a 5 shot group under a 20p at 35m , we have a saying in the uk cheaper is not bad ,

2% per 1000 feet of elevation is the change in "true airspeed" of a plane, and a pellet should be little different. With that I'd estimate that you lose roughly 10% at 5000 feet. On a 900 fps airgun, that's roughly 100 fps maybe a little more if temperatures are above standard... (59 degrees at sea level).

You cant use the same pellets as a fair comparison. Just like a real gun there more accurate with one ammo, and then you put different ammo in the same gun and cant hit the broad side of a barn. So this video is not a fair comparison.

For a 12 year old hands down get the daisy 680 powerline . Super accurate using the iron sights grab a couple of types of pellets I forget which ones shoot the best in that gun . I will say the scope it comes with sucks so buy a 40 dollar scope or after he gets good with the iron sights buy an actual air rifle with decent scope.

There at about the 2:14 mark you said 'have a spare scope" isn't it true that the Hawke scopes are Air Gun rated,...i.e. built to withstand the sharp recoil ( sometimes ) of some break barrel air rifle may give? I sure do hope so, as I have bought three Hawke scopes just for my air rifles, lol! Not a valid comparison mate !! I have a .22 Beeman RS2 and I like it. When I bought it I tried JSB 14.35g and JSB 25.39g pellets, both 5.52mm heads. It was horrible, about like your review test. I captured a pellet in folded up towel and found heavy rifle scoring on the head and skirt that was not even. No wonder it was spraying them around, like a curve ball, marked unequally. I then tried H&N 18.21g hollow points with 5.50mm heads. It went from zero to hero !! I got 2cm groups at 20m. The JSB 14.35 cronoed at 629 fps, The H&N 18.21 at 630.5 fps (16fpe) out of a new rifle. It is a pity I'm so far away, I would challenge you to a match, my Beeman against your SIG with a pot of the price difference. Now that would be interesting

I would like to see you make a video comparing my Crosman Shockwave with some other rifle to see how my rifle does. I would NEVER buy another Beeman air gun again. I bought a Beeman R-1 in the 1980’s because it was supposed to have been one of the best and paid extra to have it lazerized. The damn thing sits in my closet today and is unusable because the piston was a piece of shit. It also came with a lifetime warranty which is also crap because they (Beeman) went bankrupt and I have ZERO warranty. The lesson learned is never buy an air gun, regardless of the manufacturer unless they have been in business for at least 5 years and the track record of what they produce only is quality stuff.
