6mm ARC does best with 18" barrel. Hornady needs to start selling bulk brass. How will anyone adopt with no ammo in reasonable price?
@oif3vetk92 жыл бұрын
I don't know, all depends on the use of the rifle. I have a 24" heavy barrel and love it but I use mine for PRS. I want as much velocity as I can get (within reason of course) and I'm not humping it long distances. A 18" version would be great for mil use. Totally agree on bulk brass. I was lucky and was able to accumulate 1100 rounds over the course of almost a year while waiting on my upper. So I have a while before I have to worry about needing fresh brass but not everyone got as lucky. If they really want this cartridge to take off they need to step up their brass game for it. (I'd really like to see alpha or lapua make brass for it. That would be awesome.)

You can use 6.5 Grendel brass to make 6mm ARC brass. Starline Brass will be making 6mm ARC in the near future.

From Barrett representative, " ... not pursuing Barrett REC7 DI in 6mm ARC!" Reading between the lines, the rifle did NOT meet the DoD special entity requirements. Sad, I wanted to purchase one of these rifles from Barrett.

I chose this over 6.5 creedmoor for my latest PRS gasser. Glad I did. Took 11 months to get a complete upper but that gave me time to buy ammo. Went with a 24" heavy barrel aeroprecision upper, silencer co lower with ambi bolt release. For a gasser it's a hammer. With factory 108 eld match ammo, when I do my part, it's a 1/2" rifle at 100 yards, average day it's 3/4". The factory match ammo is fairly temp stable, the 105 black is a bit more temp sensitive but still very accurate. I just started playing around with handloading for it. Tried the leverevolution powder, not impressed. Very temp sensitive. I've tried several other powders (all using 108gr eld-m bullets) but wasn't overly happy. (Either due to powder temp sensitivity or low velocities) My latest venture was using vihtavouri N150 with 103gr vapor trail bullets, definitely onto something there BUT I finally was able to score some 105gr Berger hybrids. Aside from not being able to get CCI br4 primers (using CCI 400's right now) I believe I have the components that will give me the results I'm looking for as for temp stabile powder that will give me the velocities I'm looking for and the most consistent bullets on the market. (And no, I'm not trying to hotrod it. Anything in the 2600 fps range is good with me. That's where the barrel seems to like it.) Overall, for a AR15 platform, I think this is one of the best cartridges you can shoot for longer range and especially for PRS.

Arne Brennen was the first to make a 6.5 in a PPC cartridge and Bill got it from him. The 6mm has been around since 2006 when Robert Whitley made the 6mmAR, Hornady got the idea when they were making custom dies for the 6mm Predator.

@mikemelina7395 Жыл бұрын
Wow, it's almost like the 6.5Grendel never existed huh. IMHO, someone at Hornady asked the question: How can we get in on the Long Range in the AR platform game, and give Bill Alexander the finger at the same time? The answer apparently was to neck down the 6.5 Grendel. No thanks, everyone who wanted it already has it with their Grendel.

Nice commercial, however if anyone does even a little bit of research they are going to poke holes in some of your claims. Let's start with .308 like performance. This works as long as .308 is running a heavy high BC bullet. 6ARC actually flies more like 6.5 Credemoor than .308. 6.5 Grendal actually flies like .308 in drop and drift. Regardless of trajectories, you can't make a lighter bullet hit like a heavier bullet. The energy and mass just aren't there. I do like the R&D that has been done with these intermediate class cartridges, just dial back on the advertising claims. 6ARC is a flatter shooting cartridge than 6.5 Grendal, that's a fact. 6ARC does not put more energy on target than Grendal. While keeping chamber pressures in the realm of what is currently considered reasonable, an intermediate cartridge will not hit like a short action cartridge. .30-06 set the action length standard in the U.S. I do think 6ARC and 6.5 Grendal are important and revolutionary caliber designs. These two rounds help to open peoples minds to what may be possible with intermediate class rifles.

I don't like the way Hornady gave Bill Alexander the middle finger with the ARC, it's a SAAMI-ed 6mmGrendel.

Yes, but now you're talking weight and cost a lot higher. That's why the military went to the 308.
@jcnikoley2 жыл бұрын
I think big army would’ve been much better off with this instead of the 6.8 x51. because this cartridge was developed and barrels have a twist rate for high sectional density projectiles, the additional benefit of more energy and greater accuracy down range, is penetration versus armor. The 6ARC could’ve done everything the army was asking a new cartridge to do, without the extra recoil and weight.
@HamptonFPV2 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree

Weight was the major consideration
@jcnikoley2 жыл бұрын
@@mailliw75 I’m not understanding how the XM-5 supports low weight as a design goal. You can make a 6ARC much lighter, because it’s based on a small frame AR, not the larger AR10 which the XM-5 essentially is. I think they put the capabilities of the cartridge at the front. Without a doubt, the 6.8 x 51 is a more capable cartridge than 6ARC. 6.8 x 51 fails by comparison of total weapon system weight compared to a smaller platform that chamber 6ARC. Don’t get me started on cost… The new XM5s delivery cost is upwards of $30K for the weapon system. All the Army would have had to do to upgrade to 6ARC is swap barrels and bolt faces, not replace the entire system. 6ARC weapons are in use by operators already. It’s why the cartridge was developed, at the request of the DOD. I don’t have a horse in this game, I’m on the side of logic, and the Army’s choice makes no sense. (Sorry for the war and peace reply)

Ohh, so it would defeat near-peer armor yet not be super heavy? Because I love that composite 6.8 they use in those things and I definitely really like Sigs and the new M5. But like you and others have said, 20-25 round mags, a ton of weight, and no matter what the reviewers said it clearly has a bunch of recoil. So with 6arc they could carry closer to the 210 rounds soldiers typically bring with em? I've heard that it'd be as low as `140 rounds with the 6.8 and I know that old creed of "the guys who can get more rounds downrange are who win" still holds true, which is what confused me about them wanting to replace 5.56 with 6.8 The armor penetration part is awesome, but I've never learned much about 6arc and I agree it looks like it would meet more of the Army's criteria, interesting : )
