@@Michael45RPM I think these "shoot outs" - or rather: comparisons - between different versions makes A LOT of sense. Especially when/if you describe what and how big the differences are. Only few of us will have the possibility to get many/all the audiophile versions and choose the right/best one from this. In these cases your videos are very helpful - as are Mike's (from The InGroove) and others. Again: It's nice to learn from you what makes the difference (e.g. clarity, sound balance, noise level etc.) and how big this differences is. PS: The only record I have bought in several audiophile versions is "Kind of Blue" (MOFI's version, the 1996 Classic Records, the 2021 Analogue Productions - and 3-4 other more ordinary versions). And in the end, I only need - and will only listen to - one of them: AP version (but have payed 3-4 times the price when I also include the price of the others).

with all respect , late 60's, early 70's US Blue Note reissues with VAN GELDER stamps are still available, and they all sound fantastic in most cases. I have compared many titles, and the vintage version has more emotion/life / energy(lebendig) than the newer version, which of course has maybe more "detail" and "clean" sound, but less " WHOMP factor ".

Yes, Michael - well done. This kind of presentation - more informative, more "fact"-based and more specific/detailed - is just what I had in mind in my comment to your latest "Turntable Favorites" a few days ago. Don't know if the comments pushed you a little in this direction :) - but that doesn't matter. Anyways - a presentation/shootout like this gives a better base for deciding which records to get. For me it'll be the Classic Series which I have already ordered. This is mainly due to the limited accessibility and high price of the AP and MM versions. Also I prefer a minimum of record turning/shifting - as with 1 LP / 33 rpms versions - it gives me a more coherent experience of the album. Thanks for the video.

I really wonder if we are in a kind of 2nd golden age for 50's 60's jazz lovers at the moment. Many of the master tapes are still seemingly in good shape and there are enough people that really care about the music to make great efforts to release these albums with the CARE that they deserve all the way through the chain. The price (for those in print) is not too bad at all right now, we can get (more often than not) perfect, well mastered AAA copies of these pieces of history with beautiful artwork. Very fortunate indeed. There is so much demand for vinyl, though, and that seems to be increasing so rapidly that I wonder if it the market will split into two bands - Increasingly expensive, low print run releases for the customers who demand high quality and cheap, churned out for the mass-market who aren't so concerned with the quality (we already see this trend in Europe with DOL etc.) . I know it is difficult to build new pressing plants but I can't believe they will not soon start to build them in China - the money makes it so.

Just like with the Dexter Gordon Classic Series NO MORE pressing defects from Optimal which is great. And lovely to have another flawless pressing of Idle Moments, anything with Bobby Hutcherson is a blind buy for me. I always see complaints about pressing quality. It stinks to get a damaged record, but that points to one of the major flaws of vinyl. It is a fragile medium. I have never had a damaged, new CD. While some of you will have more resolving kit than me, mine is still pretty good. I struggle to hear any difference between a great recording on CD and vinyl. For example, I recently picked up the Mofi recording of Supertramp Breakfast in America. I dropped the needle and was blown away with the sound. So, then I stuck the CD in and guess what. I was blown away with the sound. The most important thing to me is how it was recorded and engineered.

It would be even better if Blue Note added the two amazing tracks from the recordings of the same sessions (1.K Twist, 2.Kenny's Sound). These tracks are included in the CD and in the DOL version (the album sounds great). It's a pity because so many people have never heard of them. Blue Note could add a single with these great tracks (and maybe cost 5-6 euros more), but it would be a huge commercial success and please the listeners. As for Idle Moments, no one is ever fed up with hearing it.

Don’t take this personal but I think your channel would be much more effective if you spent more time on the details on the sound and performance of the releases. And put the album and artist in a loose historical context. Less YT entries with more meat on the bone You spend far too much time on formulations, prices, jackets, remaster engineer, pressing plants… the best sounding version? Idle Moments This one - “It sounds perfectly harmonic” That’s it? Sorry to be critical but how about some details (that song really stood out on x recording, vibrancy, tonality, imaging, instruments, air, quality of the recording itself) and contrast the differences on what you are hearing on the other copies. Michael Fremer and for the most part, the Steve Hoffman forum members leave really nice commentary on what they are reviewing and comparing it to other recordings. All our wallets can attest to that. A lot - I mean A LOT - of buyers are reporting terrible pressings in these Blue Note reissues, noise and non-fill randomly, specifically in this Kenny Burrell release. Just check out the reviews of any online seller of your choice, about 20% report unlistenable copies - which, again, is a lot. Just beware. Doesn't matter who remastered it, or from what source if the pressing is sloppy or rushed, which is unfortunately quite often the case nowadays. Vinyl has become so hit and miss that I really think CDs are the only way to go, you can't trust new pressings. They just don't have the time, the plants, the workmanship, the care that's needed to do it right anymore.

Optimal is the weak link-- their lack of quality control is evident and expected now. The first was Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else, next Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin' and recently Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue. UMG is reluctant to admit it -- let alone replace the many defective copies they're selling. When Optimal gets it right these reissues sound great, but they have a huge problem with quality control. I've experienced the same poor quality from a Pure Pleasure pressing pressed at Optimal -- the same issue. Fortunately, Blue Note went with RTI for their pressings of the 12 LP box set of Lee Morgan. Blue Note needs to correct these issues it has with Optimal, because the consumer is suffering because of it. If not, these titles have been reissued enough already that it will make it easier to quit buying their future releases -- like it was with their terrible 75th anniversary releases -- garbage vinyl. Blue Note needs to publicly acknowledge their problem, and assure its customers that Optimal’s lack of quality control will not be allowed to continue into future pressings.
@anthonydavies90933 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. My Midnight Blue is horrible, I’ve returned it to Amazon, but expect the replacement to have the same issue. These 2 albums are tremendous and they deserve better quality control. @@anthonydavies9093 Thank you for your comment. Sorry to hear you received a stinker too. I hope your replacement is what it should be. I agree, it is a crime that they're allowing these to be sold. My Midnight Blue would have been perfect, except for the visibly massive circular deep scuffs at the beginning of side two. That should never have been allowed to leave the pressing plant, as I said, it is visible -- you can't miss it -- no quality control. The noise from the scuffs are like a wider, longer lasting version of hairline cracks -- very detrimental to both the stylus and the sound quality. As it stands, I have to start side two almost 45 seconds into the first track to avoid the scuffing. Apart from that the album sounds great. I bought mass produced records -- before they made audiophile reissues -- back in the 60s through the 80s, and I never ran into the issues of pressing flaws causing audio anomalies or just plain rough handling/abuse after it was pressed that I'm describing that are regular occurrences at Optimal. I can only recall two times, back in the day, when I had to return a new LP, and that was when they either skipped or got stuck in the groove. Blue Note and Optimal can do better than this.

Michael, I would rather ad music samples in your comparison videos than stop with it. Wonder why dont you do that, short of time maybe? You can easy play / record same piece of music from 3 differ LP's in one video within 6 minutes, say 2 minutes from each LP of same part of track. And of course with your comment within same video, just before music samples. This would make the whole thing much interesting, imo. Dont get me wrong, thats how I see the things, which doesnt have to be same for you, so all good. Cheers.

Sorry , i think you don't pay all this Lp. Your material is very high end material ...so your reviews are not for all people you love music

Yet another wonderful video Michael. I received both of these in the mail on Tuesday, and listened to Idle Moments last night. I was very satisfied with the playback. I will be cueing up Midnight Blue tonight.
