I make knives for a living and you’re using pretty much the same mixture that I use to etch blades. I can leave a blade that’s not had an edge ground on it yet in the mixture for a few hours and it will come out surgically sharp due to the steel that has been removed along the edge. No doubt that you're removing lead. But you’re also removing steel from your barrel too. This causes instances micro pitting in your bore. And each time you use it, that pitting will get deeper. This can cause something called “corrosion stress cracking”. Worst case scenario, your barrel literally breaks off at the chamber. This has happened before in some firearms (mainly revolvers) due to cutting fluid formulations being used at the time to machine the barrels. You’re also creating something called lead acetate in the used liquid of your mixture. Lead acetate is extremely poisonous and can enter the body through skin contract. It also easily contaminates the water table if you ever dump it into your sink or on the ground. The only way to safely dispose of it is to take it to a hazardous chemical disposal center or conduct a process that precipitates the lead out of the solution before you dispose of it. Not to mention it’ll remove bluing over time too. It’s a bad idea all around. I think you’re getting good groups because you have a good barrel and a good rifle setup. And you may be improving your accuracy when you clean your barrel. But mark my words, you’ll eventually run into big problems if you continue using that mixture. At the very least you’ll end up with a barrel that is pitted enough to be noticeably hard to get clean.

Not sure if you know this James, but the solution you're putting into your gun barrel is 2/3 of the ingredients required for antiquing/patina/aging/pickling/intentionally rusting steel. The red stuff in your solution is actually iron oxide (rust) that is accelerated by the solution you're using. If it works for you, then knock yourself out. But I think that Balistol or brake cleaner are better alternatives for removing lead fouling from your gun. It is true that a clean barrel can shoot significantly better than a fouled barrel. So I fully agree with your statements and testing. But I don't think that the cleaning solution you've chosen is a good option for cleaning your gun barrel. When iron oxide forms on the surface of a piece of steel, it leaves behind microscopic pits after it's removed. It's just par for the course. If you're running some lubricant through your barrel after using the solution, then the effect is probably negligible. But there is still a negative effect. The vinegar and peroxide go into the gun barrel clear, and there's nothing red/brown inside of your barrel. The gun powder and leading will come out black/grey. So the red/brown is definitely iron oxide. Do a test on a flat, clean piece of bar stock steel. Take a flapper disk and grind off the mill scale to expose the clean steel underneath (simulating the inside of your barrel). Then submerge the piece of steel in a jar with the solution in it, and pull it out. Walk away for 5 minutes, and see what it looks like. Instant rust! Brake cleaner is cheap, accessible, and effective. So is Balistol. And the latter is designed to break down leading in gun barrels. I just think the 2 aforementioned products are a better alternative from a chemical perspective. Just my $.02 though.

Copper and lead removers are acidic no matter what. And we should all be using them on occasion. The methods you suggested won't remove copper or lead fouling at all as far as I'm aware. They must be corroded out essentially. He shouldn't be getting ferrous oxide of course. Commercial products and following well tested instructions would likely benefit him better. The only downside to his method is him shortening the barrel life. Honestly, if looked at like shooting a higher pressure cartridge that burns out barrels faster, and no other method is good enough to remove the lead fouling to get as good of results; then there's no problem as long as he's willing to replace the barrel early (probably needed).

A friend of mine who is a locksmith, turned me on to Houdini Lock lube and cleaner. He uses it to clean all his guns. It's a little pricey but it doesn't take much. Let it soak for a few minutes, hit it with a bore brush spray it out with brake cleaner then patch it until clean. Amazing stuff. On my muzzle loaders, it runs circles around the best muzzle loader cleaner on the market.

I got away from bore cleaning .22 and .17 rimfire long ago. My accuracy stays top notch. I do clean the chamber and action to keep cycling properly. I am a believer that the bore of rimfires reaches an equilibrium point of lead, powder residue and carbon and it pretty much stays that way shot after shot. So goes my experience. I really do believe a lot of shooters do damage to the bores and chambers with vigorous "clean as a whistle" cleaning practices.

I bought an Anshuz target rifle used. I took it to the range and it shot like crap. So, I took it home and cleaned the bore. An amazing amount of powder fouling and lead came out of that bore. I think it must have had thousands of rounds through it without cleaning. It shot like a different rifle after I cleaned it . One ragged hole at 25 yards.

@@johnndavis7647 There are exceptions to the rule, especially if the rifle was sitting for a long time without being shot, 22 bullets have a lot of wax, etc., they shouldn’t be getting leaded up a whole lot unless you’re shooting very high velocity like stingers, standard velocity doesn’t really leave lead build up.

swab out the chamber and take care to keep the bolt, extractors and ejector arrangements clean but do not touch the bore. My belief is that the bore reaches a state of homogeneity and cleaning is not profitable until you are experiencing accuracy problems, even then it may not be the solution to improved accuracy. Most of all I avoid the bronze brush, a swabbing down with bore solvent and patches is sufficient when I do clean. @@justovelarde3456

***FAIR WARNING - LONG READ*** After every range trip, run a dry patch once or twice through your bore with a quality cleaning kit or run a .22 cal bore snake through it once. Approximately every 500 rounds or so, you'll start to get a carbon ring at the end of your chamber right before where the bore starts. This can compress against the neck of the bullet itself when you chamber it and decrease your accuracy. So I'd say give the chamber a good cleaning with a proper .22LR chamber brush and then swab it clean with q-tips every 500 rounds or so to avoid unnecessary carbon build up and follow that up by using a bore snake or a few dry patches a few times in case any loose carbon broke free and found it's way into the bore. As for cleaning the action and (bolt, extractor, reciever walls, feed ramps, and chamber/breach face) I'd recommend cleaning these every range trip to keep the gun cycling smoothly and reliably. Same thing goes here. After cleaning these parts and surfaces, run a dry patch or bore snake through the bore in case any carbon you cleaning broke loose and made it's way into the chamber or bore. The reason I don't use bore brushes and scrub the bore on a .22 is actually for two reasons. One, the lead used in .22 is softer than that used in centerfire cartridges. Because of this, it fouls the bore quicker but it is also mostly broken loose just by continuing to shoot it. Two, MOST .22's need a bit of build up in the barrel that we refer to as "seasoning". I'm no scientist but the way I can explain it as that it helps with the bullet stabilization. Example. I bought a brand new Savage MK II FVSR and took it out shooting. Brand new after getting it zeroed, it was grouping about 1.75-2 inches at 50 yards. After about 50 rounds, my group's went from almost 2 inches to having a group the size of a nickel. This was consistent for the rest of the day. I figured this was just starting to break in the barrel. I took it home, cleaned the action as usual, cleaning the breach face, feed ramp and chamber, and then I proceeded to vigorously clean the bore by using a bore solvent and brushes, followed alternate use of patches to get ALL of the lead and powder build up out the bore. I was so happy with how clean I got it. But next time I took it shooting my groups were right around 2 inches again. And yet again, after a about 50 rounds I got my nickel-sized groups back. Mind you, I was using Winchester 555 count bulk high velocity 40 grain copper plated round nose so to me, that accuracy is more than acceptable. The only weapon I recommend CLEANING the bore every time you use it is any black powder firearm or any firearm you shoot corrosive ammo through. If you made it this far, I thank you for sticking with it and I hope you gained something from this. 👍

A few tips. 1. Don't clean from the muzzle end. It wears on the crown. 2. Commercially available bore cleaners work just fine and don't cause premature wear by etching the barrel the way hydrogen peroxide and vinegar will. Those are two chemicals you really don't want anywhere near any part of your firearm. 3. Coffee can is a good idea. Coffee can in the sink might be even better. Would probably stress the spine less as well. 4. Those kinds of groups at 45 yards aren't "Insane", they're acceptable considering what you're working with. If you want true one hole groups, you're going to have to get a, "one hole" level barrel.

If you keep putting this corrosive mixture down your barrel it's going to pit the inside of the barrel. Just use a solvent with a brush much safer and just as effective. I hope you got that crap out of there after you cleaned it.
@cavscout888
@cavscout888 3 жыл бұрын
It's not going to pit unless some gets left inside somewhere and the rust is allowed to go deep. Otherwise, it'll be an even layer of frog hair rust over the entire surface. 'Solvent' (kerosene with additives) is also corrosive, so even Hoppe's needs to be removed or it can/will cause rusting. Solvents are generally meant for mostly just carbon fouling. You still need to flush after using solvent, or well dilute with oil. I'm thinking Barnes CR-10, though a 'copper remover,' would probably be effective on lead, and I've never had cause me any rusting.

I enjoy your videos and the information you present which is very informative and useful to many for sure. As far as cleaning a barrel I've always stayed with one of the various barrel cleaning solutions and then followed up with a light lubrication of something like fp10. I was also glad to see that you used the bore brush to scrub the barrel good has so many seem to be afraid that that's going to damage something which is bologna! As far as 22 ammunition goes I've always used either the copper or brass like coated bullets rather than plain lead as I believe they don't contaminate the barrel as much. A good scope can also make a great deal of difference as far as shooting consistency. I like the Leapers Accushot scopes with the 36 color choice lighted reticle as well as the mill dot crosshairs and their newest etched glass mil-dot reticle a little nicer yet over the wire reticle but just slightly. Of course a lot has to do with breathing and trigger control to maintain consistency in shooting. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Good shooting !

As noted below, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are bad juju, not only for the barrel, but for your skin, eyes, nose, throat, and lungs if you happen to inhale the fumes. Mixing the two creates peracetic acid, it's highly corrosive. You will see some folks in various forums refer to it as "the mix" or the "the recipe", or various other monikers, and many still use it, but you'll also notice they make lots of statements about don't do it, it is potentially hazardous, etc, etc. Yeah, lead fouling sucks, but a better alternative is perhaps a Lewis Lead Remover (brass screen patches that will really scrub out the lead well), or other safer chemicals. Typically the trade off for chemical lead and copper fouling removal is time. Chemicals that work quickly are often dangerous or bad for your bore, others that are safe require more time to work.

Nice data to back your work. Well done. The vinegar does the cleaning, the peroxide adds the punch with the extra H and O available. Peroxide drastically speeds up the chemical process. Semiconductors uses this for etch processes all the time. It's called buffered etching. Ammonia is a good copper cleaner, I'd skip an acid for a base in this case, but both are corrosive and need good flushing with water. It's just that ammonia really likes to eat copper. And you can still get it on the cheap as a household cleaner same as vinegar and peroxide. To discuss barrels, do you do anything to prep them when you purchase them? I found if I just clean them well and shoot them when new, they foul super fast. But if I clean them, then run 8-10 patches of car rubbing compound down them, they foul much less and clean much easier from then on. I was concerned I might impact accuracy in a negative way initially, but that hasn't been the case. Just need to know when to stop, because rubbing compound will dirty the patch every time I haven't studied this methodology to the level you present in your work, but I haven't noticed groups opening up or such either. But this has drastically reduced my bore scrubbing duties, especially on the centerfires.

I use a product that I think is obsolete now. Back in the 80's, S&W bought the rights to this white colored liquid, cant remember its name(tiger milk)(?). But intructions said to "treat" the barrel, rub into bore ,let friction create enough heat so outside of barrel is warm( room temp.). Remove all excess, and the chemical is somewhat embedded to the bore. From then on, removing grit took about half the normal time! Text back if I can be any More helpful...

i hunt with my cz455 and i can get groups like that all day long till im sick of it with 38g cci blazer. trouble is. the first cold bore shot will be god knows where. at 65 yards it can be a foot off. if i keep shooting it stays amazing. but let it sit for a few hours and the 1st possibly the 2nd shot will not be on target. after that they will one hole at point of aim every time.. i cannot figure this issue out. a clean bore makes this worse. gets better after at least 50 rounds have been fires since last cleaning.... that first cold shot is the most important. so id love to hear how this may be fixed.. its done this since it was new.

When the SS 10 - 22 was new I pulled a snug fitting wad though the barrel about 300 times. The wad was soaked with .5 micron diamond paste and tied to a loop of yarn. Sound crazy? (I think .5 micron is finer than polishing compound by about 5 times!). The barrel was visibly shinier after the polishing. Has anyone tried 'dri-lube' on ammo? Spray a pile of ammo, let dry, place in magazines. (?)

When I had a couple of 10/22 rifles I drilled a hole in the back of the receiver that was centerline with the bore. Removing the bolt allowed me to clean from the rear without removing the barrel. Your 10/22 shoots OK and if you're satisfied with your groups then that's fine. But groups that can be covered with a quarter at 45 yards is not benchrest accuracy. Different lots of the same cartridge do shoot differently when the accuracy standards are much tighter than yours.

Great info thanks for the information in your FYI on cleaning. personally I don't see how it can bitch if you're immediately removing the solution after you've given it a bath to clean it. You're following up with oil there shouldn't be any damage. The only thing that I've seen that holds true that you could be causing damage to your bore is reversing the boar bristle path. I do believe this does affect accuracy from what I've tinkered with over the years. You should always clean the bore with a boar bristle brush the same way the bullet from the chamber not from the muzzle. The boar bristle should be used in the same direction the bullet moves only. To each zone though. Enjoy the information you put out, thank you

@alexgonzales5468 3 жыл бұрын
If your talking same hole effect sometimes the wax or lube that has dried up and add to that a bit of dirt or lead build up on a cold barrel may ever so slightly alter the bullet. A cold newly cleaned barrel as well also might have a slight effect to the bullet compared to the next shots. Might not be noticeable to the casual shooter or hunter but to the finicky target shooter who wants to hit the same hole at 25 or 50 yards or meters, each and every time, then prepping a barrel by doing some fouling shots may be necessary.

Lol... I don't think you understand "accuracy" for a .22LR and to make a claim of INSANE is plainly silly. 1/4 MOA is reasonably achieved (1/4" at 100 yards) but you're selling some barrel cleaning technique to people who don't know any better with a 1 MOA group. A decent shooter will shoot 1/2 MOA at a match and still not win the competition on the day...but they won't be blaming a dirty barrel or shoving in some "secret sauce" to fix the problem. C'mon man, don't publish stuff that just confuses learners...keep it real.

James I have to agree with the comments below about your bore cleaning solution, totally corrosive and not what any normal person would use. Why the hell would you use kitchen cleaning products when there are tried and tested professional solutions? Further I have to say your groups at 45 yards are really not that impressive. We shoot .22 pistol groups at 50 meters better then that and with rifle 5 shot groups that are barely much different from .22 cal hole. Your groups are ok for hunting but not competition target shooting.

I can see you are a 22LR guy. I am too they are my favorite rifle to hunt with. I own a bunch of them in rifle and pistol. I use to make a solution called blue goop. You soak pure copper in 26 BE hydrogen peroxide until it dissolves. Mop the bore with it and run a patch wet with hydrogen peroxide to activate it. It will clean copper fouling out completely. I can't see it working on lead though. I use to shoot a lot of 308 and that was the old way to save a barrel. I enjoyed your video. If I could have one gun with a guarantee of a supply of ammo, it would be 22LR. My next choice would be 22 hornet simply because it's center fire and reloadable.
