Recently a new subscriber and really enjoy your videos on turning, I'm a retired 70-year-old Carpenter from rough to fine finish recently playing with lathe projects for fun and personal sanity lol. I cannot tell you how much your laid back approach and you're no nonsense, straight forward comical attitude towards your craft reflects mine... I've learned so much in a short time watching you and your beautiful projects I can't thank you enough... You're appreciation and respect for the pieces you start with and how you present them in the end is outstanding! All the best to you and yours and again thank you "young" man... Mark

So I bought a cheap set of tools online since I'm just starting out as a rookie and thought, "man, these are just worthless!" Well, duh, they had to be sharpened. Neighbor gave me a Rockler honing system that works so-so, but only for straight edge tools like chisels. So this video helps a TON! Thanks Phil! The things you're teaching people is invaluable! Of course I am biased since I LOVE all types of woodworking. Thank you again for all your videos, way too cool 😎!!

Hi Phil, just watched the shop tour and loved it, particularly the equipment that’s bought and never been used, I’m a master at that one, and also the stacks of lumber. I know I will very rarely be able to tidy up, and I’ve made my peace with that now. Thank you for sharing your workspace 🙏.

Great to see your ‘shop’ rather larger than mine, which is just as cluttered but used mainly for metalwork as I build big telescopes and other astronomical equipment for the two unusual observatories I built. I have converted a greenhouse into my wood turning ‘shop’, lined it out, put a heater and lights in and the various tools, machines etc. our block is a natural wooded hillside 5-acres with good views of the skies and more varieties of Tasmanian hardwoods in various states, a lot perfect for wood turning. I use a two ton Komatsu excavator to do my ‘gardening on the small sections we have cultivated, it is also how I moved my felled dead trees to where I can cut them up. At 83+, my muscles are not quite what they used to be. I have also reached that stage where I can’t be fussed making jigs etc. if I can buy them, time is too precious to waste on making tools, fittings etc. it takes time away from using my big telescopes, wood turning, keyboard playing, landscape painting, growing our foods hydroponically, and the list goes on. Don’t know how I do it for the money!!. Take care, my friend in wood turning, from the Southern Cross Observatory, Tasmania 42 South. 👍😁🔭 not sure if this will work-try iy and let me know please: photos.google.com/albums

Hi Phil & many thanks for inviting us into your shop & showing the beautiful surroundings to your home. I’m a huge fan of your channel (guess you figured that out a while ago !). I enjoy your no nonsense, always ready to learn something new and share approach to the age old craft of turning something pleasing from a piece of wood. I may be thousands of miles away but I feel a kind of affinity with you, the way you approach a project down to understanding the tools and how they’re sharpened in a particular way and why. I’d like to thank you for the hours of enjoyment you have given me especially during a period of my “old age” when the unexpected has struck me down and prevented me from being in my shop, doing what I love - taking a piece of wood and making something unique that takes its place in my home or becomes a gift or often ends up as a charitable donation to raise money for good causes. Have a Very Happy Christmas 🎄 and Health and Happiness to yourself, family, loved ones and friends in the coming New Year. Regards from the U.K. Geof

Thank you so much for your very kind, thoughtful words, Geof! Your comment means more to me than you might know. I so wish for you to be able to get out to your shop and enjoy these "golden years." There has been a little tarnish on the gold at our place, too, lately. Mostly the reason for this shop video instead of a turning. Hopefully the new year will bring new blessings and fewer challenges. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Geof! Phil

My husband and I watch your channel and love it. He just started turning wood a couple months or so ago and he loves it. He has been a machinist by trade for over 40 years so it made sense to progress to wood turning after our bil gave him a wood lathe. He has made trees, candleholders, bowls etc. Love it! We are wondering what kind of pen you use to sign your beautiful creations? We have tried a few and we're just not sure. Lol Thank you! We will keep watching! Yours is the best!

This video is True testament you dont need all those fancy tools to achieve PROFESSIONAL RESULTS.!!! Just be your self and explain in Laymans Terms what you are thinking about before you even start turning. Giving ideas and instructions what you are thinking about and demonstrating the steps to get professional results. I think this mind set is exactly why you have millions of follower's and subscribers cant wait for your next video so WE CAN GET(OUR) FIX As you can clearly see there are no fancy tools, just ordinary turning tools. THANKS AGAIN for showing your shop to All The World To See where all the magic happens. I for one will be ever indebted that I have learned so much from YOU. I am so glad I Stumbled on to YOUR CHANELL!!!!!!!! Although we have never met, I would be HONERED if I was able to refer to you as one of my friends. Phil. Great expltion of thing again. One thing I do on sharpening is I take a piece of duct tape and write the degrees on the tape. Glad because now I don’t feel so bad about the clutter in my garage shop, and sad because I would love to have some acreage where my shop is not two meters away from the neighbors. Thanks for the tour, Nice touch. I wondered how your shop was set up. I have a work in progress with mine, I have to come up with a chisel rack, i found that the shaft falls out if I stand one in a hole drilled in a bench top. Resharpen, won't do that again. I have installed and hooked up a natural gas heater in my garage, it is a lot more comfortable.Keep up the great videos. Rob from Oakville Ontario Canada.

Thanks for all the videos Phil! It's great to be able to see your workshop and it sounds like you're in a beautiful location. Yes, I suppose the heater would be a great addition - in AZ an air conditioned shop is a luxury. How about a woodstove for your mistakes?? The chisel rack makes me nervous, but other than that I love your shop.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 3 жыл бұрын
A wood stove would be nice, John, but no room. I was trying to think why the chisel rack would make you nervous but I guess it's because the pointy ends are up? That was a concern when I set it up but I have never even come close to getting a scratch. Maybe there's more room than it looks. Anyway, I love it! Thanks for stopping by! 😊

Good for you, Louis! Can I assume if you are taking a step up to CBN that you've already got a great jig, like the Wolverine? With that combination, sharpening is a breeze and I think you may get more personally involved in a piece when using HSS tools. At least, I do. You can just feel the wood better, helps with the creativity. Thank you, Louis! Phil

I'm so glad you found some of my pieces useful in your own turnings! I was in Port Townsend last summer. Love it over there! I have turned some Alder and it can be very beautiful. If you have any with tight bark and find yourself over this way, let me know. Very kind of you! 😊

Hello Phil. Partly on my question about sharpening this video answered. It will be necessary to make yourself such a device. It is a pity that turning is my hobby and not my main occupation. Time for hobby only Saturday and Sunday summer. Winter workshop is not available in the country, far from the city and a lot of snow. Thanks for science!!!

Phil, I really enjoyed the shop tour. Thanks for info on CBN wheels and 1 ½" width. I am getting a new setup now. Found your videos yesterday and I can't get enough of them. Trying to watch them all. Yesterday I sent you an email, and last night you answered. Thanks a lot. Keep up the work and keep the videos coming. Now i am going to look at small tree trunks and roots in a whole different light. D Stephens

Hi Phil, thanks for the grand tour! doesn't every wood worker/turner have a wood collection that they started when they were young? I certainly do! I'm so sorry to hear about Edna. (saw your other video today) Im really at a loss of of what to say. honestly I cant say anything that will make you feel better, but we all go through some kind of loss, big or small. It really made me sad, and I don't even personally know you, but I know your a good person and I know I look up to you, and I hope you can keep wood turning and staying connected with us. :)

Ya know, Ray, I'm amazed by the wonderful works of art created in small spaces. I always thought bigger was better, but now I know better and if I needed to downsize, I know I could continue turning in a much smaller space and be perfectly happy. I think all I would need would be a bandsaw, maybe a drill press and the lathe. Oh, and a little space to store some wood! Phil

Well, yeah, I've thought of that, C W. Problem is, it just isn't me. I'm totally into nature, natural edges, live edges, voids and cracks. Round turnings just don't get me too excited anymore. I like to look at segmented pieces and watch them be created, I just don't want to do it.

Hi Phil. Nice shop tour! I’m still stealing space in the garage for my stuff. Not nearly as satisfying or convenient as a dedicated shop. I have two 8 foot pieces of a bowling alley that I’ve always meant to use for a workbench and tool stands. 100 year old maple is pretty tough stuff! I’m just north of you I see, in Vancouver, BC. When you talk about cold and rain, I’ve often wondered if it was just coincidence that I was experiencing the same weather! So ..... nope! Cheers, Rick
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 3 жыл бұрын
Well, howdy, neighbor! I'll tell you, I had to cut my bowling alley workbench to length when I first got it. What a chore. That is the toughest wood I've ever cut with a saw. Plus, it's loaded with small nails that hold one layer to the next, while the glue dries. If you can get a bench set up with it, it will last forever, I'm sure of that. Yup, sounds like we are on the same weather band, Rick. Well, spring is about to be sprung! 😊
