You've shown that it doesn't matter how much space you have, you can never have enough storage. A lot of people would have built a long work bench along the side wall and then cluttered it up above and below. You have a large space, with a 3-car garage, but you still worked at maximizing the use of the space and as a result, you have all the tools most hobbyists only dream of having and you still have a huge space to work in. I admire your organizational skills and ingenuity. Together, they make for a smart shop. Well done.

What's cool about your garage shop is it is deep. Like how you can stack your tools in the back and still get your cars in. Nice set up.

I've heard your name come up in podcasts, so when your shop tour popped up here, I had to watch. I love the mobility of your shop tools & the perfect compromise of shop space while not losing parking space. I don't have a shop myself at home, so all my tools get set up in the yard, then packed up at the end. Subbed & looking forward to seeing more of your vids.

Great shop. Enjoyed the video. I watched your one on the hand tool bench and decided to sub and see what else you have in store. I'm late to the game, just finding your channel. The last part of the tour really convicted me about using my garage as a shop to the exclusion of my wife's car! The mobility of the hardware is really so simple and so effective. I think "lazy" crept into my workflow. Just 10 minutes at the beginning and end of each work session, to move equipment back to the walls (which makes cleaning up way easier) and I could at least get my wife's car in. Thanks for the kick in the ass! New project, mobilizing the shop tools. Cheers.

Very nice shop. Clean, neat and well organized. I am over in Atlanta and in the early stages of setting up my shop in the garage. Will also be parking cars in there. Wish mine was a three car garage. You have given me some good ideas. Next steps for me - paint walls, hang ducts, build lumber and sheet goods storage, put castors on jointer/planer, build combo MFT/3 and router table cart, etc... I see your Festool rails hanging on the wall. I've got to figure out a place to store mine. Finished putting together my dust collector last weekend and will be hanging the main duct along one wall, similar to yours. What diameter is your main duct? Later, Rob
@AlabamaWoodworker7 жыл бұрын
Rob J. My main ducting is 6". My drops are 4". I minimized the amount of flex hose used to go to the tools. I do have one long 15' flex hose that I use to attach the jointer and planer. I figured the line loss would be minimal considering it's the first drop. Everything has a spring loaded self cleaning blast gate that I bought on a smoking deal from Penn State Industries (I want to say I payed $60 for 8 aluminum spring loaded blast gates). Based on my research, you want to maintain the biggest diameter possibly until you reach the tool. Lastly, make friends with a HVAC tech. I had my HVAC guy buy the thicker gauge ducting, wyes, reducers, etc. It was a lot cheaper than buying ducting from Norfab and much higher quality than buying from a big box store.
@AlabamaWoodworker7 жыл бұрын
Rob J. PM me if you need any help!
@rljatl7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I just may do that. ;-) I have some of the same things you have, like both Jessum Clear Cut guides, Fastcap version of the Paulk Workbench, Trane mini-split HVAC, etc... I really need to get on the stick and build some drawer storage and install shop lighting. Are your lights florescent or LED? I would prefer LED, but not sure which ones and where to buy.
@AlabamaWoodworker7 жыл бұрын
I really should have mentioned the shop lighting in the videos. I bought my shop LEDs from Sam's club when they went on sale for $19.99 a set. They go on sale often. The lights are 5000K, 4500 Lumens. I have 6 of them illuminating the area where I spend most of my time doing joinery, assembly, layout, and cutting (my Multifuntional Outfeed/Assembly Table). To give you some prospective, I shoot my videos at an f-stop of f/4 and an ISO of 200, and sometimes my videos can be too bright. I hardly ever see my shadow. Hope that helps.

Yes, very helpful. Not seeing your shadow is important. It's annoying when your shadow covers your cut line or something else you need to see clearly. I'll check out Sam's. Sounds like a great deal.

This is a nice setup. I thought I recognized the miter saw stand back there. I wound up doing pretty much exactly what Steve did, except flipping the right & left lower sections because I'm right-handed & wanted more outfeed to the left side. Interesting combination on the table saw outfeed table, there. I still need to build one myself and was thinking of just modeling after this, but after seeing this I'll have to do a little more thinking about all that I might want it to do for me. I've been able to get all my FesTool stuff at the miter saw station (again just b/c of his design), but if I do make a larger-function outfeed/assembly thing, then perhaps it makes more sense to have the sanders there at least. For the dust collection, did you do similar duct work with a smaller collector, or just having the cyclone? I've only got a 1.5 HP "standard" Jet dust collector, but still wanted to get some piping going. Where were you able to acquire the ducting itself? Was that an HVAC type shop? I was originally thinking PVC, but now I've seen a couple people using this, so just trying to figure out what's best (and won't break the bank..). Thanks!

The ducting was installed for the cyclone. I acquired the ducting through my HVAC pro.
