Love these shop tours, Jay. Thanks for doing them. Lots of good ideas and it makes me want to see more about how each person approached their shop layout and fixtures. For me, videos like this also build the notion of community amongst the KZbin woodworkers, such as yourself, Jason, April, and Nick.

Jay, great commentary, and Jason, your hard work shows up in the way you have purchased and organized your tools. I saw a lot of nice ideas that I will be incorporating into my shop. Both of you are a credit to the woodworking profession and hobby !

Every shop tour exposes new ideas. The Dustnado is foremost this time because drill press the work is usually far messier than poking a few pilot holes. Also, about 20 years ago I heard Sam Maloof say when he bought walnut by the tree or by the log in quantities of about a thousand board feet he was getting it for 87 cents a foot... just a thought for woodworkers with the space to air dry timber.

That is quite a shop! And so clean! Clearly, a lot of work has gone into "tuning" this shop. One thing: you're probably losing a lot of dust collection capacity by using small diameter hoses/ducts straight from the dust collector inlet. There are also some sharp bends in flex duct. My planer has had a sharp bend in its duct for years, so I don't necessarily practice what I preach, it seems, just thought you might want to know.
@bentswoodworking5 жыл бұрын
B May I agree. It’s constantly changing and was not meant to be permanent. I’m trying to see what works before I commit to spending a lot of money on proper duct work
@bmay88185 жыл бұрын
@@bentswoodworking I know it's a contentious topic, but I personally think metal is better for dust collection ducting, as it's more durable and doesn't have static electricity issues (I think it says something that plastic ducting doesn't exist in factories). If you ever decide to go with metal, ignore what the $$-having people say and skip the fancy seamless ducting with the flanges. I used regular HVAC ducting in my shop and it works just fine, though it does require more effort to seal it up. But it's waay cheaper and far more readily available. Just an FYI. Nice shop!

Great shop tour and now I have another woodworker to follow. I'm guessing you shot this while you were in town for the two Rockler visits? re: the Jessem Clearcut, it's awesome. I attached mine to a piece of wood cut to fit inside the top of the sawstop fence. Then I put a magswitch from rockler on each end. It's been completely stable but the magswitches let me pop it on and off as needed (vs screwing it to the fence).
@christobar5 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what i did as well. Just for people who don't know, like I didn't, magswitch makes a forstner bit for cutting out recesses that fit the magswitches.

Question on your router table. I built my own table. The top as well. I built the cabinet but haven’t installed any drawers yet. It is framed out basically like yours. The space under the router with two draws to the right. Under that space it’s just open. So my two questions, first how is your dust collection setup. I have a 3” port in the back and when I run the router I use a piece of cardboard to cover the front with about an inch slot across the bottom for air flow. It works pretty good except when I turn off the collector the cardboard drops off and of course slides under something. So I am wondering how your collector is setup and how well it works. The second question is how are you using the drawers and would you change anything. Sorry for the long post. Thanks. P.S. your shop is real nice.

Another awesome shop tour of another AWESOME shop, Jay. I am envious of the shop space, yet glad he has built this (business) from scratch and apparently done well. I have a question for either/ both of you: What height do you recommend for the miter saw worksurface (measured at the aluminum turntable? It seems that most TS setups and outfeeds are roughly 35" (plus or minus), and band saws are 40- ish. I am sure it varies by person and their preference/height, as Jason appears to be a bit taller than Jay. I am right at 6' tall and every basic MS setup I have done is around 38-40", as it seems the most comfortable, without partially stooping. Thoughts?
