I keep seeing something about VANOS timing tool. What is it for ND is it necessary, I didn't see him say anything about it or use it?

It would be the best if he used the correct torque specs for EVERY bolt and nut

Just a small note: at 27:06 you mention 6 ft-lb but according to BMW TIS it is 10Nm which equals to something slightly above 7ft-lb :) In case anybody doesn't know why it is important to stick close to OEM torque specs - thermal changes stretch materials and if you have your screw too loose it may slowly unscrew itself and if too tight it may snap off. There are tolerances on everything so you don't have to be exactly 100% spot on torque specs but the closer the better of course :) TIS SOURCE: 4AZ Linksgewinde: Passschraube für Hydraulikkolben an Zahnwelle M52TU / M54 / M56 M6 10 Nm *My personal offline TIS is in german but in this case you don't need a translation And at 28:04 you mention "nice and tight" as a torque spec :) if you don't mind me translating that sentence into a number then it would be 50Nm which is quite a lot TIS SOURCE: 3AZ Verschlussschraube an VANOS-Verstelleinheit M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS M22 x 1,5 50 Nm PS: There used to be a few online TIS versions but BMW did a great job at shutting them down completely and there will problably never be another one. There was a lawsuit in Germany during 2020 that demanded access to all the torque specs and DIY related information for car owners that did not wanted to have to visit a mechanic to repair their own bought cars and BMW (and basically all car manufacturers) had to make it accessible. And they did but of course in a BMW sort of way. At BMW everything costs extra. One day you'll probably have to pay for a "welcome" greeting upon your entrance :) You can buy a one day pass, a monthly pass or a 365 days pass. None of those 3 are in the "I am a DIY person" price range so don't even bother to check it. If there ever will be an online TIS again it will most likely be down very soon.

Thank you I am trying to be doing this to my 03 e39 530i this weekend. My oil hose had a crack in it and crumbled when I tried to take it off. Vacuum lines were brittle and had to replace a few after crumbling. The disa valve needed a rebuild. Cleaned pretty good now just have to take off the fan clutch and go to town. Also not noted in video is Bearings should be slightly lubed and you should always bolt the pistons back onto the cams and make sure they spin with little force If not use sandpaper to sand down the spacer between bearings and recheck. Spin each one counter clockwise. They should spin with very little force not spin it and it just keeps going like a fidget spinner then spacer is too thin which will cause rattling. After confirming this then put pistons back into the Vanos case and install on engine. By not doing this step it can cause performance issues and check engine light to come on.

Great job wish we could have heard the actual vanos rattle before you started. I have a stumble on my 04 e60 six speed at higher rpm almost like a slight buck or hesitation you can actually see the rpm gauge stumble been to dealer multiple times had engine ECU reflashed by dealer for some puma repair did not work same issue, no codes related to this anomaly, any ideas new coils, plugs. I and dealer seem to be at a loss, and can you do a segment on the e60 self steering head lights I have the dreaded blinking green light on dash, i replaced the module in the glove box but still same issue could be module under light but would like to know which one and how to test or what to look for in the programming tool I can make them move in test mode with software but not when car is started and light on thx in advance love the channels

I picked up a pair of vanos pistons at the junk yard and basically rebuilt them with the new o rings and anti rattle rings. Unfortunately it wasn’t as easy to break open as yours were, and I didn’t have the soft vise lining, so my pistons have a few scuds and mars. Nothing major. Looks more cosmetic then harmful. Do you think I would have any issues if I went ahead and installed the pistons? Can I maybe hit it with some fine sandpaper to smooth it out? Thanks for the vids

Where do I find it... let me do that. Just changed the vanos unit. Tried to fill it with oil 🛢 and ended up spilling it on the belts and hoses. Cleaned that off with hot water and dishwasher detergent...

I am about to do this job, but seals only - there is no rattle, but my engine struggles at low revs and my fuel economy is way down. How does it compare to other jobs, as far as difficulty? I've done the CCV (the lazy way, but I did the valve cover gasket at the same time) and the oil filter housing gasket already...

Oil on the rubber hoses is a bad thing, right? Which is why you make sure to tell people to take precaution to not get oil on them or clean them if they do. But what is a good way to clean oil from rubber hoses? Is there some sort of spray we should use? Just wiping it will still leave a film of oil and I imagine that's not good. Thanks!

How do y’all feel about the eBay rings and anti rattle parts? I already have the solenoid and oil return lines etc replaced from fcp euro parts but the vanos rebuild kit comes with everything for like $1200 🥴 the rings and springs etc on eBay are less than 100

Hi I’m hoping you could shed some light on a issue I’m currently trying to figure out and I’m really hoping it’s not what I think it is that is giving the issue so here it goes i recently bought a 2005 X5 4.4i v8,the gut I bought from said it’s been sitting for 5-6yrs winter/summer here in the Illinois state. I started the vehicle let idle for Atleast 45mins or more and I noticed there’s a coolant leak from from the overflow tank I replaced the tank n I see that the temperature gauge on the dash is all the way in the red zone as if the vehicle is overheating but I’m not getting any heat in the inside and even the radiator fan is not on what do you think might possibly be the problem with it

Hy I have 2009 BMW X5 xdrive 4.8i every day when I first star the engine, the engine rpm stay at 1,000 and after 2 minutes the rpm drop between 350 to 750 up and down and then the check engine light came on, and then when I use my scan tool to scan, it show the cylinder 5 mis fire and then when I erase the check engine light code, the engine run smoothly for the whole day and then after the next day It does the same thing against and then I have erase the the code against, I change all spark plugs and coils and pcv valves already , can you tell me what’s wrong

If it's been a while it needs force. Better to have the special tools required thin spanner/pully holder. If it wont' budge (remember it's reverse thread) then you need to use brute force whack. Careful not to damage hoses etc
