this video helped me understand a lot. THANK YOU. Quick story. I was riding with my husband yesterday in a very mountainous, beautiful area in Pennsylvania. I became so sad to the point of tears. My husband was taking on the hills with so much ease, and I had to keep getting off my bike, and so I felt like I was holding him back. I told him I wanted to purchase a pedal assist bike to avoid constantly getting off the bike, and having an ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE bike ride. I'm going to write down EVERY SINGLE suggestion. THANK YOU!

Hi John! Fulltime life is not for everyone but it IS the right life for me. Ask yourself how much alone time you need or want, how comfortable are you with uncertainty, how good are you at fixing things? Does life on the road call you? Is it something you think about often? If there is a way you could test out this lifestyle first, then I would recommend that. Or start small and cheap. I started with a camper van. After five months I couldn't take the small space but I knew I loved the RV life so I upsized. There are many many ways to do this life including less travel or even wintering in one place.

Hi Iliana, and you're very welcome. I Love cycling and e-bikes were just what the Dr ordered. At 68 I was feeling like I just couldn't keep up with the big dogs anymore so I took an e-bike out for a ride and it was big hit. I was able to do ALL the pulling so my buddies were happy about it too. Good luck on your search for the right bike. P.

Pedal assist with torque sensor is critical! Cadence sensors starts the motor when the chain ring turns, but they activate the motor based on pressure.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 4 жыл бұрын
The torque sensor senses how much pressure you are putting on the pedals and provides assistance based on that value. A cadence sensor simply gives you assist when it senses the pedals are being turned. Yes, good point that this is also something to look for when shopping for an e-bike. Paul's bike has both systems and he just did a 1000 mile review on his. Check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4mZdGSleN2Di8k

E-bikes are great! I used mine to travel to work for 5 years where each day was a 25 miles round trip. Over the 5 years I travelled the equivalent of around the world! It kept me fitter and saved a ton of money in petrol and car costs. My e-bike had a twist throttle, as well as pedal assist, which was great for quick getaways from junctions and traffic lights, etc, I never had a problem with twisting it by accident. My e-bike was a relatively cheap generic chinese bike with a rear wheel hub motor. The quality was not up to german standards but then maintenance and parts were cheaper! I love your yellow/orange smiley shirt by the way! Thanks for posting.

Love my Ebike. We bought the right ones the first time fortunately. We have the electric Veego folding Fat Tire bikes from Ridescoozy - 500w 13ah is plenty of power for us. Paid only about $1500 ea. Has pedal assist on and off so we can just pedal if we want to. We have the twist throttle and have had no problems and no issues regarding the bike taking off if touched. Probably a general warning given on the video on the off chance it could happen, but I find I would really have to twist that throttle on purpose for any movement but then again I don't turn my assist on until I'm seated on the bike. Maybe mine has some safety feature I'm not aware of. Anyway, I love everything about our bikes. We've used them everywhere, love the welded racks on the frames and the fun colors. Came fully assembled and Jason and Ronda gave excellent customer service. Jason tests out all the bikes before the white glove delivery. All we had to do was to put on the pedals. It's been 100% fun for us with zero problems. That was 9 months ago. Great so far!

Hi Sue! That's an awesome review! And what a great deal you got. I started shopping in October and I noticed prices inching upward. And glad to hear that you've had no problem with the twist throttle. I think they must have a safety feature or a better designed throttle. I test rode a $4000 Pedago with the twist throttle. Besides being so heavy that I couldn't keep it upright, that twist throttle seemed out to get me. And then I broke my hand during the test ride! Could NOT wait to get that thing back to the bike shop! Happy riding! I hope you've been able to get outside and enjoy that during all this time. Honestly, my bike has been my lifeline during these times. Stay safe!

It already did I already made an impulse buy and got the Jetsonj5 electric bike I’m not gonna knock it. You get what you pay for you guys are 100% correct you really need to know what you want it for and what you gonna use it for and me I did not know anything about electric bikes, except that you had to watch out for them before you cross the street so basically I got a bike that would not go as far as I would like it to go, which requires me to make more upgrades so the money that I’m gonna be spending on the upgrades on my bike that didn’t even come with accessories, not even a light to drive at night so definitely I agree because I could’ve just spent all that money in one shot and got exactly what I wanted, but I didn’t know what I want and I got something on an impulse and I suggest others don’t make the same mistake as I did because now I have like a BMX style legal street bike that I found myself upgrading first it’s the battery then the controller and of course I’m getting the fardriver controller which cost more than my electric bike, but I understand the system that needs to be put there in order to create the safety and for the safety safety to stay in place there has to be communication going on. I’ve been watching all over about these electric bikes and it’s about creating the safe system that works together without overheating and I see the controller needs to talk and I find that to be the best controller to get this job done then I’m going for the 1500 W rear motor and then I am at where I wanted to be in the first place so yeah I would’ve spent $1200 or $1500 and something that I would’ve wanted in the first place. The Jetson only cost me like $500 that was it and you get what you pay for because they had plastic pedals and a little bell that you ring like a school bell but you get other people safety is the most important part of this. I really got to enjoy the Jetson electric bike for what it was and for what it is I’m enjoying it. I just feel like I might’ve picked a more powerful Jetson instead of just going in and say yeah let me get that one right there that looks cool without even reading into it 15.5 miles an hour. I would rather have bought this bike 28 miles an hour. I would’ve definitely purchased the bike that I had would have wanted the whole time because I don’t think somebody should be able to just jog up to you and take you off your bike or if an emergency you need to like get with traffic because there’s no more bike lane. I would want to be able to keep up with the cars somewhat not fully not fully. I’m not looking for a motorcycle. I’m not looking for a car and I’m sorry for making it so long. You probably didn’t even read it or maybe you did, but I just think this subject is really important, especially for parents for their children and things in that nature, I need to understand between a child’s electric bike, a teenagers, electric bike, and a grown person’s electric bike and a difference between what you want to use electric bike for so this is a very important subject and thank you great content

Great information without a bias toward any particular bike. I've been Jonesing for an e-bike (I have a teardrop trailer and belong to a couple of camping groups) for more than a year, and I keep learning more and more about what to look for. You confirmed what I had decided about wattage. I live in Colorado, and had decided I really need to have 500 or more watts. I also knew early on to get the lightest bike I can get that still has the features I want. My limitation is money, so I'll have to find a compromise that I can live with! I chose the hub drive after checking out the pro's and con's, and have been happy with it. OHM makes a very cool direct hub drive bike I would have bought if it wasn't quite so expensive.

I bought an ebike last November and only now I found your channel and see your advice: something tells me I made a good purchase, your accounts around volts and watts helped me to contextualize its characteristics! And gosh, how much I'm loving riding it, I've regained the pleasure of riding a bike, which I haven't done since my 20s (I'm 52!), it's very good for general health but also fundamental for a certain relaxation and mental health - for me, that makes all the difference. My Scott Sub Tour eRide 20 Men wasn't exactly cheap but the investment is worth it

For riding an E Bike there are a few things NEEDED. 1 is the shocks and discs brakes for the speed... 2 size of tires to handle speed and balance..3 is the battery specs. I looked at 12 different types of EBikes ad found the MUKKETT TO FIT THESE NEEDS WHEN DEALING WITH 20PLUS MPH besides the right price. The width of tires is a must if you riding extra weight besides your own. Anything less than 2 inches wide will make bike vulnerable to slipping and too heavy of weight load.

This was so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! My only suggestion is to mention what your idea of a hill is. I live in the Midwest and I think what I'd call a hill is what others would call an incline, so it makes it tough for me to know how well a bike will work in my neighborhood.
@LizAmazing

Yes, that's a good point, thank you. Since I'm from Kentucky I totally get it. That's I mentioned the "Rice-a-Roni hill" that the 250W motor ebike could not climb. You folks are giving some great advise. First, many inexpensive (cheap) ebikes are really no more than electric scooters. If it has a throttle control (like a moped or motorcycle) the "bike" is really designed to use the motor to propel it. A motor driven is illegal to ride in many places. In Arizona and CA, these type bikes are not allowed on trails. They are considered motor bikes. Also, often these type bikes, because of inexpensive parts and poor design features, can be dangerous. The can be unstable. People can get overconfident, ride too fast and crash. This happened to a friend of ours. He had his jaw wired shut for 6 weeks, lost 4 teeth and had a concussion (no helmet..DUH). Peddle "ASSIST" provides power at various levels that you adjust AS you peddle. If you stop peddling, the electric motor cuts out.
@LizAmazing

Yep. Lots to think about when buying an ebike. When I see children on them I cringe- for exactly the reasons you mention. It's surely an accident waiting to happen1 Happy and safe riding to you!

I'm not a recreational biker. Rather, I consider myself more of a pragmatic biker. I'm 75 years old and I bike with my dogs on non-extreme wooded trails and in the last few years on a rather rough, paved hike and bike path. My trips are maximum 15 km. I purchased my first e-bike on a whim when I took my wife's bike in for servicing at a local bike shop. I asked if they sold e-bikes. They did. I took a demo ride and walked out with Trek Verve Lowstep. That was about 2 1/2 years ago. Obviously, I didn't do a lot of research before my purchase and in retrospect, I just got lucky because I'm quite satisfied with my bike. For your viewers who are "pragmatic", non-recreational, non-extreme and senior riders here's my thoughts after owning my e-bike for 2 1/2 years. Purchase from a reputable, local dealer that can do updates and repairs. Get a step-through. Much easier on hips and backs when mounting or dis-mounting. I have pedal-assist only. I would prefer to have a throttle to help me get started on slight inclines or loose soil. Battery life and power is irrelevant if you're not an extreme rider and go on long trips. Ignore the specs especially if you're getting a brand name. Forget about those big, ugly, rugged tires - unless you're looking for an ultra-luxury ride that is easy on your tush. Hub drive v mid drive doesn't matter. Hope this helps some of your viewers. Cheers
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Captain Ron. I think the biggest takeaway from your comment is to know what you plan to do with the bike before purchasing. For some range is the number one concern. For others, off-road is. People who are going to do mountain biking or big hills will need a hub drive. Thanks for watching and happy riding.

@@LizAmazingEver since I bought my e-bike I've kept a log of "distance-between-charges). I charge my bike when it get's down to 25% or less capacity. In 2 1/2 years I got an average km between charges of 115 km (72 miles). I am a senior rider, not expert but an experienced, frequent casual biker. I don't know about mid-drives v hub drivers and frankly, it doesn't matter to me. The only things that concern me are comfort, step-through, throttle and a reliable service center. Hopefully, this will help those in my same situation. Cheers

I got the Himiway cruiser. 750 watt 4" fat tires ride twice a day in Colorado Springs, CO. It is well worth it especially the hills. I peddle 80 90% of the time and set my power level to 1 most of the time. The only time I use the throoter when crossing the busy intersection. I can get about 100 miles on a full charged battery . I avoid using battery downhills and flat level. This way I can preserve the battery. I ordered online and it took 2 months to get it!!! But the wait was well worth it. I keep my ebike in the apt since I don't have a garage. Many people don't understand how ebike works. I see some places ban ebike for whatever reason. It is really same as a bike except pedal assist going up hill ( I am 72 soon). Also I made a ramp to my bike rack behind 4runner so I don't have to pick 72 lbs ebike.

Lot's of E-bike reviews show throttle only distance. I find that pedaling just a little can double or triple the range. Low pedal assist can get me 70 miles on a 14AH 48V battery on a 750w motor. I carry an extra battery most of the time. Slow riding on the flats are where an E-bike shines. Go slower to get more range. Headwind will kill range, but a tailwind will draw almost no power.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing Жыл бұрын
Good tips. The Juiced RipCurrent and CrossCurrents have some of the biggest batteries we've seen. The throttle only distance is 52 miles, easy to do 70 if not on high assist. Thanks for watching.

I highly recommend the Aventon Pace 500 Stepthrough. I bought one for $1399.00 with powerful 500 to 750 watts motor, top speed is 28 mph, 20 mph on throttle only. I tried many ebikes in the past & in my opinion this Aventon Pace 500 Step is the winner, the best affordable ebike made with excellence in craftsmanship, engineering and design. I am in love with my Aventon Pace 500 Stepthrough. It is perfect. I love the Stepthrough design. No need to lift my leg to mount it. It is a lightweight 48 pounds. Powerful and quiet that can go uphill like a breeze, great powerful hydraulic disc brake, great pedal assist which helps me at the traffic light stop for an easy & fast get away by just pedaling lightly. The Samsung battery is a powerful 48 volts with a range of 30 miles. To use the thumb throttle you have to pedal first to activate the thumb throttle which is a safety feature & I agree. I love the wide lcd display, the Shimano Altus 8 speed shifter, wide cushy saddle & large comfortable tires. Gives you the ultimate balance in comfort & power with a relaxed upright sitting position in a wide cushy saddle. I guarantee this ride will keep you smiling all day. Stay safe & happy during this pandemic.

Paul and Liz. This is a good introduction to e-bikes back in early 2020. Maybe it's time for an update? Explain to people the difference between a Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 e-bike. Where is a Class 1 legal and where is a Class 3 legal and illegal? Totally agree with you that you need to understand how you want to use the bike. On paved roads, unpaved roads, single track trails? This is probably the most important question for people to understand. Another important point is bike maintenance. Do you want to deal with bike maintenance or would you be okay investing more in an e-bike to have zero maintenance? Options like Gates carbon fiber belts and internal gear shifting that require next to no maintenance are important considerations when purchasing an e-bike. And yes! The e-bike range question is really important too!
@LizAmazing

One thing I'd mention tho is converting your fave existing bike as an option to spending thousands of dollars on prefab. I've built 2 so far, a fat tire n a road bike both Bafang Mid drives n they're incredible! You can choose your own components to you heart's desire for LESS than prefab...Now I know not everyone is inclined or have the tools to convert...but for those willing to learn about their bike n try it, its not that difficult n extremely rewarding to complete a 35 mile ride on a perfectly handling n shifting bike that you built n maintain!!!

Looking at e-bikes ourselves, and came across one being made (possibly assembled) local to me, with the brand name Dost, where if you get the auxiliary battery (second attaches to the main) the advertising states 120 miles. I looked at some reviews, and they seem well thought out, and I believe it sells for just under $3K. "Canadian $$". I won't be in any hurry to jump into one, although I had noticed one other higher end bike, there is a 3 month minimum waiting period, as they can't keep up with the sales! They're taking orders for November I believe, and this is just late July! Hope you two are having a fabulous time overall, and especially when touring on your bikes! @@LizAmazing - Thanks Liz. Wondering if you two have done much with regard to 'locks' and/or ability for individuals to do all they can to 'keep' their bikes without getting them stolen? I believe that will be the next big thing for these more expensive bikes, is the ability to thwart thieves and what is out there on the market to stop them from being stolen! Also, apparently there are GPS trackers out now, albeit bikes would be harder to hide them on, but that might be at least a partial option for adding to one's bike to possibly get it back? Wish I had see this 3 years ago when becoming semi retired ,purchased 2 e pedal assist road bikes .They were 1300 pounds sterling each and although my husband really got some use out of his ,I didn’t .I wasn’t confident on the roads not having ridden since my early 20,s and now in my late 50,s with a bad knee got off to a great start but then after I came off it ….lost my nerve .The thing you have to remember is how heavy they are and if you find yourself slowing down whilst climbing ….wrong gear wrong power level …..you just fall over .Things to consider ….get a hybrid so roads and some challenging terrain are covered.Think about battery life …you really don’t want to be pushing it home .Rent an e bike to get the feel of it ,the idea of it and then buy .We ended up selling both of the bikes and lost money .I’m no cyclist but on my new bike 27 miles was possible at nearly 60 years old .Did a quick 14 miles today no problem.Look the point is that if it were not for the e bike ,I wouldn’t be cycling at all .Cycling on the roads of the Lake District…..no problem.We have a Scott and a Cube …in black and look great. Get looks all the time .At over 3000 grand each it’s a considered purchase and you have to factor in the right gear to wear as discussed in this great content and how to transport them because at 50 kg for the 2 of them they ain’t going on the back of our car.You will need a trailer or heavy duty rack on a tow bar .That’s our next purchase so we can explore more of the Uk .Don’t buy on line …we went to a specialist store ,spoke to the guys ,took it round the car park .You have somewhere to go if problems ….that’s just how I feel about it .Conventional cyclists do look down their noses at you but one day they will have one guaranteed .Thank you .Really enjoyed this .🇬🇧😍

FYI for those that started riding in the 20th century. It's not a girl bike boy bike anymore. Big ebikes that have step through model options can be a bit easier to mount and dismount for smaller people or people with certain mobility issues.

For the bicycle purist , the exercise involved is the whole thing BUT as you get older that electric assist starts to sound pretty good. Thanks very much for giving this invaluable info so I can make a better informed choice.

@@LizAmazing they sure are so much fun! 🤩 I couldn’t decide & loved them both for different reasons so I bought them both!!! My husband wanted to ride his regular bike, but I convinced him to just try my new e-bike! He called it a cheater bike & an adult bike with training wheels LOL 😂! We took them out to a trail for the 1st time & I made him eat my dust 🚴💨💨💨 while going uphill! LOL 🤣 He then decided to give pedal assist a try & he yelled out WOW, THIS IS FUN & IT MAKES TAKING OFF DO MUCH EASIER!!! 🤩 LOL I knew he’d love it just as much as I did! He ate his former words about it being a cheater bike & even says now he will get rid of his old 10 speed! 😉 We did 13 miles with combined manual & pedal assist level 1! 😍😍 I never would’ve been able to ride that long up so many hills using my old cruiser! We’re SOLD!! 💝

There are basic things from pedal cycling that are just as critical for e- bikes. This is, type of handlebar for comfort when you are doing a distance ride, and saddle suitability for comfort and correct height and pedalling efficiency. Also remember you have a heavier bike than a non e-bike. They are difficult to pedal without tiring if the battery is low or runs out.

Very good points- thank you so much! You've got to be comfortable while riding for sure. And that is even more challenging if you are shopping for an e-bike online, as many people are. Paul just did a review of his bike which he has had for over 1000 miles. Check it out: youtu.be/ 5X6C1oCxPUg

These maybe cheaper or more $$$, but if worried about theft there are _foldable_ ebikes you can store inside RV/bays or inside your trunk. Think of it as saving $$$ not needing a bike rack...

We haven't found any folding bikes under 65 pounds. Whew, they are cumbersome to fold and to carry. The folding ones with smaller wheels are also too squirrel-ly to ride for very long. But for some, foldables are the answer. Thank you!

I am 71 and am looking at trike bikes. I will be using it to go into town. Almost everything I want to do is within 5 blocks of where I live. I find that some have lithium batteries some have sealed lead acid maintenance free. It will be my main mode of travel. My building is up a small hill. I like the look of the big basket in back and front. That way I can get my weeks groceries. What kind of battery is best? I figure I would use it 3 to 4 times a week. I only have limited funds on SS but am planning on selling my stealth Van. Realized the minivan is too small for limited mobility. I hate getting old.

You bet riding is fun!! I am pushing 60, and enjoy riding and have just as much fun as when I was 14. I have never stopped riding, and I am e-biking shopping, not to make riding easier, but to allow rides that could otherwise be constrained due to time. I always look for ways to get more exercise not less. Would definitely not need and e-bike for a 1 or 2 mile jaunt in a campground, but the e would allow exploring much farther ranges at any given time. - Cheers

That's right! And you'll get some help up steep hills should you need. Be sure you get pedal assist. Know that you can adjust how much help you get so you can work as hard as you like. Happy riding!

In the UK your only allowed max 250Watts, it’s ok for relatively flat with occasional hills, but not enough power for hilly country Yorkshire for instance. Having said that, my Oxygen mtb whilst under powered in some instances, is FAR better than having no power assist at all, and it does give me lots of exercise, and when I’ve done 20 miles in Yorkshire I’ve had enough., bearing in mind I’m a 70 year old pretending to be 14.

Glad to hear! Yes, you’ll work harder on hills with a 250W but better than nothing. Paul is also 70. It’sbeen 20 years since I’ve been to Yorkshire- you have some beautiful countryside to enjoy during your rides!

You need a license, registration and insurance if the ebike is over 250 watts, or has a throttle, here in Ireland. Soon it'll be the same wherever you are, no doubt; get a 250-watter or pay.

Twist throttles are excellent throttles - the key is to have a safety switch that shuts off the throttle. Together, this is preferable to thumb throttles for most uses.
@LizAmazing

Not just me, but several folks we've met have had accidents with the twist throttles. It sounds like you are used to them, in that case, that's fine. We just posted an updated ebike shopping video, check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYPGqoOKeb-Ip8k

@@LizAmazing Maybe the throttles that you or others have had issues with did not have an off switch. All FattE-Bikes come with an off switch so that you can't accidently trigger the throttle. That said, most "accidents" are more from user error than throttle or component issue. New technology just takes some folks a little more time to get used to. Plus, I think the comment about throttles was more in comparison to thumb throttles which aren't quite as secure as twist throttles. Thumb throttles require you to release your full 5 finger grip whereas if you hit a pothole wrong while only holding on with 4 fingers your hand may slip off entirely. However a twist throttle allows you to securely hold on making it the safer choice.

My ebike doesn't have a throttle. it's all pedal assist, but I don't mind. It's also legal to ride anywhere you can ride a bicycle. It is light (50lbs) for an ebike. It doesn't have much power but I can ride it without the power assist about as fast as a normal mountain bike on flat ground (20-25kph). With pedal assist on the motor cuts out at about 30kph(19mph) If I have to go a long way I will just use the power assist for the wind and the hills. I have done over 50miles on one charge this way. I can also go up curbs and even "bunny hop" it if I have to. I would totally recommend this style of ebike for those used to riding a regular bicycle. My buddy has a bigger, more powerful, and more expensive ebike that has a twist throttle as well. It also has a bigger battery. It is heavy though which means you need to use the pedal assist more. He is used to driving everywhere and basically rides it like a moped. That is good for people who aren't used to pedaling. If I were going to go that route I would go for the "fat tire" style. The main drawback of the fat tires is it is harder to find tubes and they are more expensive. The tires are also spendy They cost more than some car tires, but they are very comfy.

My wife and I just bought e-bikes here in Aus, the Leitner Berlin Cruiser and the Venice cruiser. They both have twist throttles but they have included a big button under the throttle so you can turn it off so the bike doesn't run away from you accidently.

Hi Mark, we have mellowed a bit on our twist throttle stance and need to do an updated video... I (Paul) got a little soured on twist throttles because my first bike was a throttle only (no pedal assist) and after a couple of months of riding it I couldn't stand it anymore and sold it. Every e-bike since that one has had pedal assist so I almost never touch the throttle anymore. I do like the idea of being able to turn the throttle on/off with the touch of a button though. Thanks for watching and commenting! P.
