Great video, very thorough review. I wish you had touched more upon the physical aspect of the handles-it appears that in order for it to run, the two handles in the front need to be held back as well as that horizontal self-propel yellow bar in the back -at the same time. Some of us older folks with arthritic hands, may have an issue with keeping those handles where they need to be for a prolonged amount of time due to compromised flexibility and ensuing discomfort of holding that position.

Like David B what about self propelled. There are times when you have to stop self propelled function and just push in certain situations. Around flower beds,trees move forward and backward etc.Does it freewheel when necessary? Most gas mowers I have owned do. The grass catcher seems quite small also. My Craftsman has a 2.4 Bu. and it seems to fill fast. I do not know why the newer mowers all have small grass catcher bags. I do not think Ryobi is quite there yet. Thank You for the review.
@lvgucciretouch Жыл бұрын
Wow. Ryobi support told me the blades cannot be disengaged. The blades stop only when you turn off the mower completely. I am so happy and anxious to try what you did because there are soft- and hard-scaped areas on a slope, and I really hoped that the self-propel feature can be used without engaging the blades for obvious reasons.

A metal deck is a big plus for many people. However, there are those that prefer these lighter plastic decks. I've had the first generation Ryobi mower for several years. I couldn't be happier. No maintenance other than sharpening the blades. The plastic deck is great because the reduced weight makes it easier to push (mine isn't self-propelled). We have one of these, upgraded from an older 20" unit that we donated to my mom. First of all, we love it. The SP option helps a great deal with our hilly half acre. The grass is very thick, We usually complete job with both batteries in about 45 minutes. To be fair, we sometimes do have to grab a third as the grass is thick enough that we can only get about a 12-15 bite per pass. We don't bag or discharge, only mulch. This has never been a problem for us in our yard with any of the Ryobi models we've owned Pricing/value should take into consideration that the 6Ah batteries go for $180/ea at the Depot. That brings the mower down to about $240. Even better this week as the kit has been reduced by $50 (Late July, 2021). As I'm already heavily invested in 40v gear, this was a steal.

Compared to my Honda mower that I bought 30 years ago for $900 (that almost $2000 in today's money) its like comparing a 62 VW to a Bentley Continental. Of course my Honda mower according to the local mower shop is the best one Honda ever made. The price alone might indicate that. Well I got the electric one for, well, trying to be a good neighbor and keeping the noise down. The Honda mower does a vastly better job. So much in fact that I most likely will rarely use the Ryobi. I might even sell it as barely used. I always try to buy the best. After taxes I gave Home Depot almost $600 for that mower. I have a very small space I need a push mower for, between a fence and bushes, and between a fence and retaining wall. So instead of buying and having to maintain and always have gas, I got one of the older 40v Ryobi push mowers. It's not self propelled or anything, but it does the job. It is freakin' gutless though. I'd hate to have to mow much more than I do with it. It's tiny too, I think it's only 16". Does the job for me though 🤷♂️, so I can't complain too much! It does take forever to charge though. I think that's more because it has to wait for the battery to cool before the actual charging begins. BTW, when the heck did you shoot this? I haven't seen grass that green in 5 months!

This new HP 40V is much more impressive than those old 16" models. However, if it works for you, that's awesome...no need to get anything different. We just shot this a couple of days ago. We're in Central Florida, and we're well into the 80s F already. As long as we get some rain every few days and the nights are warm, then our grass keeps growing. Thanks for watching.

Just bought the 20 inch self propelled replacing the 18 inch push as my health has become worse with my cancer and other problems just can't push it anymore.. haven't got to try it out yet as it's been raining here for days(Pensacola Florida).

Do you HAVE to use the self-propel mode? What if you just wanted to push it? I wonder if their “up to” run-time is based on saving power by not using the self-propel mode.

one other thing that the operator's manual does not say, and even ryobi support's answer was confusing, ie., didn't answer the question in a way that I could understand. Cross-cut vs. Combination. page 11 says there are two modes, and that's all it says. My question is, how do I really know by looking at the blades whether it is operating as cross-cut or as combination? And if it's cross-cut (which I mostly need), how would I "convert" it to combination cut mode? Is it a separate blade that I need to purchase? Do I just modify the cross-cut blades in some way so that it's operating in combination mode? They say the combination blade will increase run times. Page 12 tells you how to replace blades, but again, what is the real difference between cross-cut configuration and "combination" configuration?

Great video I just wish the handle bars adjusted the way the older models did but I did here you say it is good for 6ft 2 in height person that made me feel better will be buying this mower soon

How does this compare to the latest EGO self propelled? I purchased it last summer and returned it because of cut quality on Bermuda and St Augustine grass. I had blades of grass it missed all over the place. Sucked because I like the footprint of that mower. It was pricey though especially compared to this.

why did you not mention the smart trek variable speed paddle? I think that is a major feature of this mower but you just mashed the paddle like a normal mower...

I have a 30 yr old craftsman and it works fine but I am too old to use a push mower because my lawn is not flat. The deck on this mower is made of "reinforced" hard plastic. I wonder how it will hold up when little rocks or twigs hit it while you are mowing. Plus the cost of battery replacement equals to a new one, which pretty much is guaranteed in about three years by looking at other devices powered by lithium batteries that we've been using. So I am contemplating to get a self-propelled gas mower, which the price is not bad. But then the environment......

I worked for Home Depot. We were constantly getting returned Ryobi products back defective. I won’t waste my money on any Ryobi product.

I understand what you're saying, but you also have to take a few things into account. #1, I bet Ryobi was the tool you sell the most (I know it is). #2 It's hard to put a blanket statement on all the Ryobi tools. #3 Ryobi has stepped it up quite a bit in the past couple of years. Btw, I'm not sponsored by them and I'm not taking up for them, but I just wanted to share my honest opinion as well. Thanks for watching.

I have had a number of 40v products for a few years now. Chainsaw, grass trimmer, hedger, and leaf blower. I have never had an issue with any of them.
@dman3783 жыл бұрын
Yes I would have to agree in the past their products were not reliable at all but I have had a lot of success with their 40 V products and we are on the makita platform so we are fairly picky. We use the auger we use the generator and a few other products and we couldn’t be happier they seem to be built to much higher standards.

Have the older version of the push mower now for over 5 years for my small yard. Runs great and cuts well if I stay on top of the yard and do not miss a week during spring and summer. Have the trimmer and blower as well and can mow, edge, and blow the patio and yard on just a single battery charge but do have to cross mow to get the mulch cut down to not see it on the yard. Was only one on block who used a battery power mower now this year have seen or better yet heard more people using them since the reduce noise is such a plus. That and not having to store gas and oil and maintenance on the engines is a great relief for me. If I had bigger yard might look at getting this and still might since I like the double blade which my old gas mower was a 20 year old Snapper with Ninja blade that cut and mulched great! Love being able to mowed and then fold it up and store it and not take up a lot of room too! Great review!
@Shoptoolreviews3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have it dialed in with your mower. You'd definitely see a performance gain and better mulching with this Cross-cut, but I'm not sure it's enough for you to make the change. When you're ready, I think it's a worthy upgrade. You also touched on something that I try to recommend when people ask us about battery powered mowers. They're great if you MAINTAIN your yard. If you're someone that regularly lets it get out of hand, then it's not going to be like a 6hp Snapper or Toro that just bulldozes through thick turf. However, if you keep it cut, it will work very well. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the review. I am on edge of Ego $749 10ah, this ryobi or the Toro super recycler 60v $799 iirc. My last lawn mower lasted 20 years toro recycler gas. Only reason I am switching is it needs a new bag now and at 60 bucks? What's the point? So I figure switch it to cordless. I like the 2 batteries and manual switch idea because I can constantly swap them out after a couple mows. My grass area is maybe 2000sqft
@Shoptoolreviews3 жыл бұрын
First, we will be reviewing the EGO Select Cut 10Ah in the following days. It's actually already sitting here in the shop. Next, I would probably steer clear of the Toro. They're not building their own cordless mower, so I feel like you can probably get better features/performance from an actual cordless mower manufacturer. It seems that with your amount of grass, either of these mowers are a great candidate. Thanks for watching.

Appreciate the review and your video… Three questions: (1.) Is the same mower available without the self-propelled feature, as in a push mower only. (2.) When you update your video, please include how it does with “Mulching Leaves…” I would assume it does a good job with dry leaves on a two blade system. Wet or damp leaves, ( like grass) may be a problem. Lastly, can this unit stand-up on end for a low depth profile storage? Thanks!
@Shoptoolreviews3 жыл бұрын
1. No, it's only avail in self-propelled. 2. It does fine with moist leaves and grass, you just can't let it get too high. 3. Yes, it will stand up. There are a couple of shots in the video with the mower standing on the back wheels. Thanks for watching.
