Thanks so much! I’m visiting from FL. I’m a surf-fishing guide down there, and couldn’t wait to try freshwater fishing, even though it’s waaaay out of my element from saltwater beach fishing in Florida. While I was out here I saw a few huge fish cruising the beach and jetty near the inlet to the bay in Rochester, assuming those were king salmon after watching some videos. Ive got limited tackle with me and a retractable fishing rod on a 4000 reel, but I might go back and try a spoon or other lures I brought. What I was throwing a few days ago spooked them away (plus i think I was throwing too close to them and they must have great vision). Trying what I learned here before I head back south! Thanks again!

Quality video guys, wish i had this when i first started instead of trial and error. One question though, does the 10lb mono leader hold up consistently when landing the kings that are mid 20lbs?
@averageontarioanglers4 жыл бұрын
10lb is more then fine in most situations. That 10lb Maxima ultra green is like rope it’s so tough. Mostly rivermouths and piers are mostly open water so you just have to play the fish with some finesse. We feel heavier leaders may impact the action on some lures so we try not to go over 12lb at the most. That being said, many people use heavier leaders so experiment and see what works best for you. Thanks for watching! Tight lines 🔥

@@averageontarioanglers Are you guys talking about jigging spoons or blade baits?
@averageontarioanglers4 жыл бұрын
Jigging spoons but I’m sure blade baits would be great too
@MrSurfangler4 жыл бұрын
@@averageontarioanglers I was wondering about the blade baits as they have the flash and superior casting ability of a metal lure but the vibes and tight action of a rattle bait. So could be a better in between lure . Regarding jigging spoons if they are effective then why don't anglers fish with shore jigging setups in the great lakes? These are very popular for targeting pelagics in the salt water from the shores. Rods between 9-11ft designed to cast jigs we can hit distances 100m+ with these setups and the recovery on the rods is designed to impart the jigging action on the metal jigs. These shore jigs have a slower fall due to their design and you could target different depths . I am a saltwater fisherman from India currently living in Toronto, so thought of sharing this knowledge

i have started and didn't know anything, i started with a 50lb braid and remember never ever loosing a lure due to snag as I can bend out the hook pulling by the line. People who either don't bring a net or bring a small short handle nets annoy the hell out of me even more than people using bass gears trying to catch salmon. I absolutely hate helping those types of people. cheap bastards.
@michteve2222 жыл бұрын
Did you say you can cast further with your spinning rod over your baitcaster?!?! That must mean your baitcaster isn't tuned properly, they are made to cast much longer distances when tuned well because the line releases straight compared to the side ways with spinning reel that has resistance.
@averageontarioanglers2 жыл бұрын
Spinning reels with large spools cast lures tied to wispy light braid extremely far. Loops coming off the spool fly thru the guides with minimal friction. A baitcaster will definitely cast farther in perfect conditions especially with a medium to heavier weight but throw in air resistant lures in lower weights like crank baits for example and the typical windy conditions at the river mouths and a spinning reel wins the majority of the time. I guess that’s why we rarely if ever see anyone shore casting for salmon with bait casting equipment around these parts.

You can’t always out cast bait caster reals there are guys that cast 100+ yards with bait caster reals. It’s all about how they are tuned most people have no idea about the tuning knob is on bait caster reals. Spinning gear needs no tuning, it’s just ready to go. I’d love to watch you cast a 100 yards without a brake away cannon, you’ll cut your fingers. But as they said spinning gear doesn’t back lash.
