Treble hooks on catfish always seem to have issues setting.

​@@codyg6057 i never had problem setting a treble hook but in the river im going to snag up 99%. You do not set C-hooks. Never ever do it. If you yank it. it will just pop right out of their mouth. With a circle hook you want to drag it across the flesh and it will dig in all by itself. Just pull it slow and light building up strength not speed as you pull up on the rod. C-hook should work over 90% of the time. It not your yanking it or your picking up the rod to early or it was not all the way in its mouth. Catfish like to suck it up and spit it out many times if it is being fussy. They are like goats and eat just about anything. It is going to eat it it cant resist just wait until starts running with it. Freshwater drum can often be mistaken as a missed catfish strike. They are going to donk donk then drop it when they feel the wieght of a heavy sinker. I use 3 or 4 oz norm but up to 8 or 10 in the spring when the river is up several feet. Then you just pray and hope. Throw it out there and let it roll into a rock and hope the hook is laying accessible. Not nothing but luck when the river it rushing 20-30mph. Increase the number of hooks you have out there will increase your odds. Check local laws. Can only have 3 rods and no more than 15 points(tines) in Wis. Meaning a three treble hook crankbait is 9pts so you could throw a casting rod and have two rods on bottom with a treblehook each. So it would now be 9 + 3 + 3 points. Equalling 15 and making you at the limit in this state. I no longer use treble hooks for catfish they do not like them. Food is food but they can see it and will only take them during a feed frenzy. I want to catch fish all the time though and circle hook is the only way(in my opinion) altho there is circumstances where a large baithook(plastic worm hook) can be benificial. Goodluck fishing guys and gals. PEACE! P.S. seldom does a catfish pick up your bait and just sit there with it in its stomach. But it does happen. I periodicoly pull an inch or two on the line through the eyelets just to make sure its not fouled or in the rare case a fish just sitting there with it in its mouth. So be wary and vigilant.

I have 3 chad fergessen catfishing poles 3 catfish specials and a yearly cost of about $300 in tackle and terminal not including cost of bait(unmeasurable). Dont use a net ever so that saves money. But ya not cheap 400 per rod. Ppus comfort ammenities like a chair a bait bucket an airator food/drink and bite alarms a rod cradle or three(depending type) ya about 2500 for the first trip. Not to mention the tackle i give away to friends and strangers. Peace dude. Seriously I hope you outfish me. That would be awesome for you.

Just an fyi, punch bait is made to be used with a bare treble hook. The "sponge rig" you're using is made for dip bait. Dip bait is a little thinner and doesn't have the "hairs" in it.

Next time you try catfishing try a j hook or a circle hook I have way better catch ratio with them. And also try and use fresh cut bait and I bet you will catch more fish on them and I normally don't use less than 20 lb mono

Justin if you're not fishing with circle hooks. You need a rod with more backbone and a moderate tip. So you can set the hook like you do when you use a jig and pig for Bass in heavy cover!!! 20 pound fluorocarbon to my guy.

Needs a new deck as it was left outside after the original owner past. 16ft lund last year of the riveted hulls. 40hp merc tiller had upper end replaced because there was a mass defect. Been perfect ever since. Wont be as cheap as might hope for as it has less than 200hours on boat trailer motor but the floor is trashed unuseable. Literally can not stand up in the boat.

I like using circle hooks with worms, cut bait, and live bait. Gonna have to give stink bait a shot!

Use circle hooks and either shad, bluegill, worms or shrimp. You can also use the balled stink bait! Leave a foot of slack, many more hook ups!

Shad is usually the best if it is the bait in your area. Otherwise bluegil if that is the main bait fish in your area. Worms grubs packbaits. Are just for having an array of possible things to do to keep you from flipping out mad when they arent biting on cutbait

My favorite googan! spent alot of my young life chasing cats. Love your videos. That bobber stop would be better used between your sinker and swivel to protect your knot from the sinker. Every time you cast or reel your sinker hits that knot and most sinkers have sharp burrs. Hope you have many more adventures and keep sharing. G4L!!!

Most of those pre rigged sponges have the trebles bent it. Bend them back out just a hair our use a slightly larger hook and it eliminates the issue of loosing fish with them pretty well

Cutbait as always referring to whatever the massivly abundent small fish in your area is. Some reason 80% of people think this is nothing else but shad. Which in many parts of the US it is. But where there is no shad. Dont be a dumdum and get miss led by people that read and make unacclaimed possesive statements proclaiming their intelligence as high and actually have no experience at all and are far far far from worldly people. You know. The people that think they are the utmost attoritive figure on any subject because they watched every top video o youtube about a subject they knew nothi g about. Take a regular cleaning sponge and cut a 1 inch piece off of it, and slide it on a circle hook. Still holds the Bait well and you don't have to worry about them getting off 😁

Great video!! Always good to mix up the type of fish you go after from time to time. Keeps it interesting. Alot of baits use cattail fluff. Thats probably the hairy stuff you are seeing in the bait. I have used Danny King before but it was years ago so cant remember if thats what he uses in his bait or not.

Bro I have used alot of "punch" bait bare #6 or #8 treble hook no fancy crap and make the bait smaller. Don't waste it. The sponge and rubber crap make it hard to get the hook in them. Still was fun to watch.

Ive found that a pear shaped lead with a swifel holds bottom better and also tangles less... (so u need less weight and get less tangles)... big eel fisherman (also try going for some eels with worms and salt/smoke them with some oak.. its soo good!. ive been test fishing this week.. looking like eel season is round the door..

Btw i use 80lb braid with between 2 to 6 feet of 30lb flourocarbon tippet, slip sinker and a 4 to 00 C-hook depending on season and the bite. You can contest 80lb braid being a waste. When the weak point is the less than 30lb knot in the flouro. But i fish the concrete and rebar embankments of a fairly mighty river. The sinker is what gets caught(main reason i use a flat round sinker) that is the point of the 80lb braid. Thanks so much good luck fishing.

Stiff rod --> 60-80lb braid --> (good) swivel+weight (or sinker slide) --> 40-50lb mono leader, snelled 6-8/0 circle hook. Castnet for cutbait. Head pieces hooked from under the lip through the forehead. The mono leader for abrasion resistance, a little stretch, and if you need to break off on a snag you only lose your hook and not your weight.

You don’t need sponges with Danny kings, it sticks well, I use a #4 treble hook.

One of the main catfish brands makes a mesh webbing for pack bait? altho nothing sticks to that material either. You can get it inside the mesh giving it an anchor point. Always throw your points on point. Goodluck

Change that hook out to a #2 treble hook and it will hold a nicer glob of punch bait. Better hook sets as well. Love these kinds of videos, keep up the strong work!

We have used frozen shrimp. Works really well to catch the bog ones. But they are a pain in the rear. Can't tell you how many times they threw the hook or broke line. Caught plenty of small ones over the years. Yup they hurt when they fin you. They have venom.
