DIY Tuna Engraved Sapele and Maple Cutting Board

Next time you run a deep V-Carve, be sure to use clearence end mills for the roughing operations, then come back and final pass with the 60 degree V - you will get a nice flat bottom in a 1/4 of the time and a clean crisp V bit finish! As others have said, do a maple inlay, or fill with epoxy. Good work keep it up! love my CNC use it daily!

Thanks Nelson. They are very nice cutting boards and you do hate to mark them up. The way I look at it is I get to make another one if it gets messed up too bad. I’m going to be making another one shortly which I will post. It’s a swordfish with a rod and reel and water splashing. Look for it soon!

Beautiful board. I'm just curious how functional it is if it has all those carvings in it. Don't get me wrong, I'd totally just hang that on my wall. But I feel like the deep cuts would catch food

Thanks man! Appreciate the comment. The board is really used as a serving board. With it being so nice you really don’t want to cut on them. It would destroy the board over time. All cuts I made creating it were filled completely by the inlaid wood so it was completely flat when I gave it away. If someone actually did cut on it, it wouldn’t hold any more food particles compared to a regular board. Can be washed also so no food would linger for batteries buildup. Thanks again for comment! Not a stupid question at all. Those are called Rockler Bench Cookies. Check them out. They are really great to have and they have an entire system designed around expanding their use. Truly a great system to have in any shop. Plus you can use them alone like I do for sanding.

Hey John - I have the 1000 X-Carve. You can’t beat it really for the hobbyist. The price is the cheapest out of most mainstream CNC routers and Inventables has been really good with support when needed. I built mine in a day and never had an issue. I still have the original model but would love to one day upgrade to the latest release. I’m at the shore in NJ. Thanks for watching and the post!

What bit did you use to create the carving?

It’s a 1/4” 60 degree V-Bit. V-Bit carving is much better than using a straight bit in my opinion. Plus the engraving now catches the juices eliminating the need for a juice groove.

I didn’t want to put a juice groove around the cutting board so the tuna catches the juices. Inlay would look awesome however.

Oh no! CNC again.... your should have hand carved it. Btw what is the use of this cutting board? It can only be hanged on the wall or may need a stand to display.

Yep CNC again! Why would I hand carve it? I’m not into hand carving.....I’m into CNC’s. If your into hand carving I would love to see you make one and show it off. Would probably be a great project for someone who is into hand carving.
