I've been saying for over a half a century that if you want expansion from a 45 Auto, you need a 185gr HP moving at 1,000 fast. Your test here simply reinforced what I've known for ages.😏
@therichie99169 ай бұрын
That's only because most people now of days want 3-3.5" barrels for their carry guns. A 4.5-5" barrel with a good performing 230gr HP will still and always give you superior performance. Of course guns that size require real men to carry them. I've done it for over 35 years without any issues.

Though I haven't bought factory ammo except for rimfire, in decades, I was never worried about plain 45 ball ammo I used in S.E. Asia long ago. I can personally attest to it's ability to get the job done. I've loaded my own for well over 60 years. And have used JHP bullets in loading for my 45's in the past with greatest results using 185gr bullets loaded just a tad under the listed max loads. Hitting various varmints caused devastating wounds. Today, I cast and load 180gr and 200gr SWC for my two 1911A1 pistols. The 200gr is very effective on the number of wild hogs here in E.Texas, seldom ever requiring a follow up shot. And it bowls over coyotes with ease. Using the current prices of powder and primers, my cast loads in the 45 Auto are 12 cents a piece. And my test media is varmints. Likely, they'd act differently in a jelly test.😏

I think you just made a good recommendation for those who carry lightweight shorter 45 ACP’s. As I also carry a 3.6” 40 I must say this is a timely and well done test. BTW, thanks for your even handed treatment and consideration of all calibers instead of just 9mm everything. To those of us who carry other calibers we do very much appreciate that. Ironically I am carrying 30 Super Carry experimentally as well so the above comments apply there too. This cartridge has not yet found its niche. In a slimmer slide than a 9mm pistol in full size or compact is where that niche would be found with 19-23 round capacity. For the 30 SC to be truly relevant the gun has to be built specifically to take advantage of the skinnier dimensionality of the cartridge. We don’t have that yet, but maybe……
@ToolsandTargets9 ай бұрын
Thank you sir. I think you're right. The 30SC was designed for the wrong market in my opinion. If they would have gotten that cartridge running in a "pocket" gun with power between a .380 and 9mm, it may have been something. I think they're so far off from that now that it would take a complete redesign. But they're the experts and I just shoot bullets into gel on YT so 🤷♂️

Folks tend to forget that the .45ACP round had a "side" requirement from the U.S. Army that is rarely mentioned today. It had to launch a bullet of sufficient weight/mass and velocity to stop a charging horse.....A requirement passed on from the older .45 Colt's. The bullet weight was finalized at 230grns. There are many more details to the story of the development of the .45ACP but I'll leave that research to those who are interested in why the 9mm was not chosen way back when as that story is so convoluted an untold number of trees have died so many, many volumes explaining, complaining about, and arguing the results could be printed.

I buy whatever the local dealer has from the latest contract overrun. I honestly don't think a huge difference in the latest LE ammo exist from brand to brand. They seem to do similar damage in flesh. I carry a .45 mostly because the G30 fits my 8"+ mitts better. The cavity in gel doesn't really mean anything. Tissue is elastic enough it doesn't react to handgun velocities that way. Average expanded diameter x depth is likely a better metric. Several years ago at a ballistics seminar put on by the local FBI office, we tested 165 gr HST .40s from a local PD's custom extended barrel Glock 22s and then from my tiny Kahr PM40. (I know I had 165 gr, I cannot swear their weren't the 180 gr HSTs but I think we shot the same thing). We fired through "light clothing" (two layers of T-shirt), both rounds stopped side-by-side at exactly 16" and looked identical. Both completely expanded and to the eyeball, no difference at all. I was surprised as I figured from that tiny Kahr barrel there was no way that round would expand. I guess that big ol' wide mouthed hollowpoint just didn't need as much push. BUT that's HSTs and these here were Critical Defense, apples to oranges. Still, great info! Thanks!

This is another great presentation showing the need for such testing.

Absolutely love your channel! Been watching your channel for along time. You get down to business and get the job done. I can always find the ammo and barrel length I'm looking for. Keep up the Great work 👍 you all know what time it is 😊

The 40 projectile expansion doesn't look pretty but the wound channel disruption looks better. Did the camera angles fool me?

No, you're right. That extra energy I imagine.

I really enjoy both calibers and have used them for years, between the two though I carry a .40 more often and it's always stoked with Underwood 155g XTP's. 👍

That 40 makes me happy to have boxes of Winchester Ranger T's in 40. That is horrible.

That 45 was surprising, back in December 2019 I picked up a 25rd box in 9mm and the cases were nickel plated, has Hornady got cheap on us with brass cases? Enjoyed It regardless, Thanks Brian, have a safe weekend. 👍🇺🇸
@ToolsandTargets9 ай бұрын
Yeah, they jumped on the "supply chain" excuse with some of the others to increase profit by stopping the nickel plating. Plain ol greed.

The 45 acp Critical Defense bullet was designed with slower MV expectations. I wonder what HST ammunition with the bullet weights would look like out of the Glock 27 and Glock 30.

I like those loads but recently have been more interested in the Critical Duty version in 45 acp and 357 Mag. If you ever get a chance check out some 45 acp and other ammo from Gorilla Ammunition and another called Lost River Ammo Company. I'm looking at a specific load they make now. It's a 170 grain Keith wide flat nose in 357 Mag. They make some interesting loads.

I would like to see the 45acp tested out of a 5" 1911. Great test brother tools 😎

I have both a .4o and a .45 in my carry rotation in addition to a 10mm. I have no qualms at all about trusting my life to any of the 3. The .45 edges the other two due to the individual gun, but all 3 are great.

The underlaying part to all of these tests is "shot placement." There are specific areas of a human body to aim for that would cause certain death in minutes without trauma care. I suggest that everyone research this. It will be a game changer for you.

Placement is definitely #1.

Tools&Targets, my two airsoft guns have a similar extreme spread as the 40 S&W. There at 26 FPS extreme spread while the 40 S&W had 20 FPS extreme spread.

I'm a fan of both these calibers but I have to admit I didn't expect that .45acp to do that well. I'd be curious how well the expansion would be from multiple rounds. From other tests I've seen, when you're running on the ragged edge of the expansion threshold it's not uncommon to have 2 or 3 out of a 5 round sampling not expand.
