as someone that casts his own black powder ammo, it's all about composition. the closer to pure lead you get, the easier it expands, the further you get, the harder and less expansion. I've said more than once, you can make slow rounds perform if you get the formula right.

The rule of thumb made up by people a lot smarter and more experienced than I am, is to use lighter bullets in short barrels, and heavier bullets in long barrels. Good test, Brian! I got some of the short barrel Gold Dots and found that the SB bullets would at least partially expand down to 750 fps! Penetration was in the 14" range. By the time I got up to 850, the bullets were expanding fully while retaining the penetration depth. By the time I reached a max velocity of 950 (per the Speer reloading manual) the bullets were fully expanded with the petal folded back along the shank of the bullet and penetration had improved to about 18". Ok, to be fair I have never tested the 230 gr Gold Dot because I personally use the 185 gr Gold Dot, which has very similar results to the 230 SB bullet, including penetration. Truth is, I've never even bought any of the 230 GD's because I simply don't trust them to open, especially if the range is extended very much! I have tested 230 gr Hydrashoks and had several failures with a Colt Comnander and the Glock 21. So I've shied away from the heavy 230's and relied on the 185's for self defense purposes. Gold Dots have a reputation of opening well at most 'normal' velocities but I sure have a lot more confidence that the SB version will definitely work with the 230 gr bullets! So while most of my back up ammo is the 185, I do have a couple hundred of the 230 gr SB rounds loaded up. First pick is still the Lehigh Xtreme Defender but my back up stuff is pretty good, too! Cheers, jc

Tools and Targets does a thorough job with their reviews. One of the best I've viewed. I did not have great accuracy with the round myself. It was not a matter of velocity, penetration or expansion, but accuracy at 7 yards from a rest. Groups had hits wide spread out 5-6 inches. Speer claimed it was my pistol but my Rock Island 1911 TAC Compact with a 3.5 inch barrel shot 1 inch groups at 10 yards in a rest with a comparable round. I'll pass on these. After looking at the T and T review of the Sellier and Bellot XRG, .45acp, 165 grain, I was impressed, and they might be a better fit for the pistol. Performance tests are fine, but I'd like to see a bit more of accuracy testing. 'Numbers" are great as long as you are able to hit the target at which your aiming. Gotta love his headgear!

I'm honestly not surprised that it performed. I seen someone testing both regular Federal HST and the plus P version of the HST through a Smith & Wesson Shield 45 which has a 3.3 inch barrel, and those were averaging between 780 - 820 FPS and they performed well. The 45 ACP doesn't really need high velocities as long as the projectile is engineered for standard velocities. Gold Dots are generally money in terms of matching performance to designed velocities in their products. The biggest flaw in this loading is that it is absolutely a standard pressure load and the energy is notably lower than more fiesty +P offerings.
@ToolsandTargets

Yep. I was thinking the same thing about the energy.

Great video as always, man!!! While I initially thought this was a marketing strategy, when looking at velocities, the out of block expansion look at each Bullet design has me a bit curious. I would wonder if it would have similar expansion out of something like a Kahr pm45, a Kimber Ultra Carry 2, or a bond arms… I know it is impossible, or at least very cost prohibitive, to try stuff out of EVERY length barrel out there, so PLEASE don’t take this as criticism in ANY way. I just wonder, and I’m sure you may have had the same question, if they tried to design a round that would work well in a 2.5” and up barrel. Again, excellent video, and thank you for giving me darn near daily videos to come home to after work!

Damn those 230 grains were impressive! I carry 185 or 200 grains in gold dot because I like light to mid for caliber, but I will feel confident if I ever careybthe 230 grain gold dots that are sitting on my shelf

Nice, great test and results. Once again good to see both barrel lengths performing really well. Speer Gold Dot is usually a good buy for the performance. Nice penetration and expansion. Good to see the consistency. Good .45acp results. Price would be the difference agreed. 👍 Thanks for sharing and be safe. 🇺🇸🇺🇸👊🇺🇸🇺🇸

Would love to see a test of the 200 gr +p gold dot. It was redesigned since the "flying ashtray" days and seems like it would expand more consistently with about 100fps more speed than the 230 pill

One thing Paul Harrell did/does was test against bone, it would be nice to see some testing against bone, would like to see how a 45acp FMJ and HP fair against some serious bone, go all the way, skull bone maybe ?

Oh yeah...there's a reason why a lot of Sheriff's departments and state troopers rely on the tried and true gold dot. Gold dots and HSTs (and to a lesser extent nowadays, hydroshoks) are the among the most popular duty ammo out there.

I remember when Gold Dot came out, was pretty much the first bonded that made it bigtime. I was hoping it would do well. When it came out the only other real 'premium' stuff I remember was Hydrashock and these were vasty better in all the tests I saw. I had to look it up, it's even older than I thought. Debuted in 1991, so was out for a long time when I got into all this.
