Considering the guv'ment agencies all went to it, bought millions of rounds, then discovered their limp-wrist agents couldn't control the recoil impulse, then scurried back to the 9mm and tried to tell everyone the .40 was ineffective speaks volumes. That's a huge energy difference between those two. I like my 9mm's , I like my .40's, I love my .45 ACP. I think they went back to the 9mm because of the influx of hiring women
The big market is the local agencies not really the federal LE market. 80% of the raw number of law enforcement personnel is local police or sheriff's offices in the US. Most local law enforcement is funded by property taxes on the city/county level. With the increase in materials costs for ammo, inflation, the fact that basically all the lead in the US is now imported... the price difference between 9 and .40 is noticable in a local department's training budget, especially for ball training ammo. This trend has been going on for a number of years and started around '08. 9mm is also the most popular in the civilian market so for varying market reasons 9mm is back on top for many LE agencies. You still see .40 in a lot of rural agencies.

I’m not a fan of the prices, but 450-500 ft-lbs, good expansion, and 18-20 inches of penetration in gel is all you need for defensive ammo. If you watch Tools’ videos of the Buffalo Bore and the Sig V Crown, you are seeing bullets at the edge of coming all apart. They’re loading bullets designed for .40 S&W, so they’re putting just slightly more powder in the 10mm case. For a proper 10 mil defensive round, these companies would have to do a lot of research, and change the composition of their bullets to make them perform properly. Then they would overcharge us even more. I like the 10 over the .40. I can have 10 in the woods and .40 in the hood, and only have one gun, dot, holster, light, etc. Now if they would just charge us for the little bit of extra brass and powder instead of charging us for something they aren’t providing, we would be in business.

You always do an amazing job as to the head to head testing or testing in general. No fluff, no hype, and call 'em as ya see 'em. My only argument is the penetration thing. Having been a tactical instructor for nearly 30 years, I do not agree with the FBI protocols as to civilian carry. 99.9% of CCW people will never have to shoot thru a car door, windshield, etc.. The human torso from front to back is on average 11 inches. From side to side, not more than 20 inches Generally, the vitals are half that distance. I say this as a current medical professional. As a former LEO, I had a certain amount of leeway and the benefit of qualified immunity as to over penetration. As a civilian, not so much. My current carry ammo gives 13 inches or so max(V-Crown). I can live with that. I have it on record, qualify for the record with it, and KNOW I can trust it. I DO not disparage anyone else's choices as their situation may be different. You just happen to be one of the few that just give the results as they are. THEN give an opinion. Can't ask for more than that!!!! Keep in mind also, my personal opinion as to performance is just that. God bless!

That's just what I want it to do to an attacker. It indicates good stopping power. The 10mm, reaching 19" is too much for my liking. That would likely go through an attacker and hit whatever or whoever is behind the attacker. Also, there is a KZbin video put out by Hornady in which they compare the Critical Defense and Critical Duty and explain the engineering behind each. On that video they stated their intent was for the Critical Defense was to NOT penetrate past 12 inches, so the 9mm used in this test performed exactly how it was designed to. The Critical Duty on the other hand is designed to be barrier blind and penetrate much deeper and was designed for law enforcement use. They even stated the 10mm 175g Critical Duty could be used for Woods Defense with bears. I would love to see a penetration test of that one.

Well i would put my 9mms with 12 and 15 round magazines with buffalo bore 147gr +p hard cast and seismic 185gr rounds all day long over the 40 and most certainly wouldn't use 115gr rounds it outdated to what the 9mm carries today..
@hartsickdisciple Жыл бұрын
9mm is cheaper and offers a little more capacity. .40 has superior ballistic performance every time, all other things being equal. It makes a bigger hole, generally penetrates more, and delivers more energy on target.

@@LarrytheMan-uc4ev If you look a the .40 S&W version of almost any load on the market (including Buffalo Bore and Underwood), it beats their 9mm equivalent. This is especially true if we look at hollow point defensive ammo. The last 10 years haven't nullified the advantages of the .40 S&W cartridge over the 9mm. All the advancements in bullets and powders that have made 9mm better have also carried over to .40 S&W. The .40 still holds more powder and can shoot bigger, heavier bullets at similar speeds. Hard cast bullets are for maximum penetration, generally for hunting or large predator defense. I too own some of the 147 grain +P hard cast Buffalo bore stuff. The muzzle velocity is 1100 FPS, not 1200. A standard pressure 200 grain .40 S&W hard cast @ 1000 FPS delivers 444 lb/ft of energy (while making a 10mm hole). 115 grain (Underwood) .40 S&W Xtreme Defender (solid monolithic bullet) flies @ 1400 FPS and hits with 501 lb/ft of energy. That's a penetrator type loading. Both Buffalo Bore and Underwood sell a 155 grain .40 S&W hollow point self-defense load with a muzzle velocity of 1300 FPS and energy of 580 lb/ft. That's midrange 10mm or light .357 magnum performance. Even a standard pressure 165 grain Speer Gold Dot LE has a muzzle velocity of 1150 FPS and hits with 484 lb/ft of energy. 9mm has been developed to where it's a good self-defense & law enforcement caliber. It will never be able to equal or surpass .40 S&W because of case limitations.

Well here’s the deal to ponder. If you take “center mass” (front) into account, there’s probably 60-70% that has no frontal bone covering and upper “center mass with 30-40% having rib bones. Once a bone is hit, stats go out the window. Either round will change a lot after going trough bone and make a mess of the major organs. Rounds below the ribs will likely be similar to the gel results until the round might hit bone or ribs in the back. These comparisons give us a good idea how the different calibers and projectiles work and I enjoy watching your testing. Bottom line, no matter what gun, caliber or projectile used, make darn sure you carry and practice-practice-practice! Make sure it connects with your intended target. Thank You Tools for dour dedication!

Your “jelly time” rhymes are always cracking me up. Excellent, thanks! Edit - BTW, contrary to what modern naysayers claim, whatever stopping power can be achieved by a pistol caliber is provided by a combination of expansion and penetration. It was only recently that this was considered to be untrue, along with the idea that the 9mm is “better than” the 40SW and 357Mag. Also along with that idea was another that claims carrying a 9mm cartridge (with lower recoil and higher magazine capacity) is better than using a cartridge that provides better stopping power.

Nothing wrong with 9mm and I carry a subcompact 9mm often but in the woods lately I have been carrying a full size 40. The Critical Defense is ok, but I like the Underwood Xtreme Penetrator better in larger bullets and I do like Corbon DPX solid Copper hollow points too. They go through cloth and other barriers and still expand and penetrate very well and are a little hotter loaded than Barnes makes theirs. Critical Defense is available in 45 Long Colt too but I haven't tested any myself. I have tested the 45 acp version whuch is the exact same bullet and they done well. I expect the 7.5 inch barrel on my 45 LC will get them to expand even better.

This video is why I am an advocate for the glock 23 over the glock 19. With just buying 9mm & a 357 sig conversion barrels plus a 9mm glock 19 magazine you've got 3 calibers at your disposal at the same size as the glock 19. But those who know choose glock 23 the true Glock G.O.A.T.

Get a kkm barrel you can run very hot ammo because it is a fully supported chamber. A fully supported barrel is a safety factor with B.Bore. my 10mm Frankenstein glock is a 7 inch we made 15 years ago. Made our own slide. Kkm made the pipe. And a 24 pound spring .. it shoots 3 inches at 100 yards with optics. 180 gold dot hand loaded to 1475. So those parts make a difference..... quality parts

I also find .40 much too snappy in a small Micro compact Pistol for EDC. I Traded my M&P .40 shield for the M&P 9mm shield for the fact that Warm loaded 9mm +P can be just as effective at close ranges with always less recoil and greater ammo capacity than the Good ‘ol FAWTY SMIFF AND WESS
@acid6urns11 ай бұрын
@@djangofreeman93829mm +p is effective but it still is absolutely not as powerful or effective as .40, the gold dot +p 124gr is only 410 ft lbs and that’s in a duty size gun, a short barrel you’re looking at maybe 360-380. 165gr HST for the .40 is at 430 ft lbs out of a short barrel gun, over 450 ft lbs at a 4 inch barrel

This was a great test. I don’t have a 40. Past 9mm I’m a 45 ACP, 10 mm guy. It is great that a 115 grain non +P will perform out of a 3 inch barrel. I think they got it absolutely right.
