Having been stood next to Brian Johnson, in the immigration queue at Miami airport, he's not as short as people say. I'm 5'2" & he was easily four inches taller than me, & just wearing what we in the UK call trainers, so no lifts. I'd say 5'6", & no reason to lie, as the youngs have never denied being short. I'd also like to add that Brian, was absolutely lovely, really kind, really humble, & an absolute gentleman. We were on the same flight with Virgin Atlantic, ( he doesn't fly private!) & as a seventeen year old girl & a mega fan, it was one of the most amazing moments of my life. We chatted until we parted ways when getting through immigration. He to his family, & me to my friends.

Good ol oil can. Those used to be really good, but all of a sudden (maybe it was in the 2000s) the regular blue cans turned skunky as a corona light. The bitters green can was a little closer to whatever the blues used to be, but the bitter was strong as a porter. Oh well, I've heard actual Australians say that Foster's is their version of America's swill, Budweiser. And it's made in Canada anyway, or it was.

Angus hasn't had a beer in his life. He talks about it in a lot of interviews. Tea and cigarettes are his thing. Malcolm was a big drinker until the mid 80s. I can't remember which tour for sure, but I think it was the Blow up your Video tour, when he left partway through to go to rehab because his drinking hard gotten out of hand. That was the first time their nephew, Stevie, came in to replace Malcolm....and then Stevie came back to replace Malcolm full time when Malcolm was too sick to continue touring.

The name Elf came around from Dio's height and the height of his band's guitarist cousin David Feinstein (later of the Rods). They were local to me and opened for Deep Purple in Syracuse. Ritchie Blackmore was so impressed that when he left DP he called Dio and wanted the band (except for Feinstein because Blackmore has to be the only guitarist) as his band.

there's a metal band from Canada called Killer Dwarfs whose members are in the 5' 4' and below range. Their schtick is where their vocalist Russ Dwarf rides a tricycle onstage. But they back this up with some strong playing and songwriting. They had a run of good albums from '84 to the early nineties. There's also Angry Anderson of the Australian hard rock band Rose Tattoo - the guy looks like he's under 5 feet tall, but he sounds way bigger with his raspy voice and tough attitude. Think of AC/DC with slide guitar. And another vote for Udo Dirkschneider of Accept. The "Balls To The Wall" video gives some good perspective.

Klaus Miene is 5,5 and was that when I met him in 1988. I am 5 ft EVEN! I came to his shoulder! He is a great man and a powerhouse of a performer! I met RJ Dio when I was 12 - (Uncle worked on the castle home in Southern Cal) and his hight is correct! He was amazing man and we could talk history and music forever! RIP Ronnie!. HE looked like an elf which is ironic since he was in an older band called ELF! One you forgot was Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran who is 5, 4! But you seemed to be doing metal! HE is still Amazing but he stands towards the back on a riser with his keyboards at a certain hight, that if he was closer to his mates - you would see how short he really is!

Not a rock star, but Carmen Miranda clocked in at 5'. Fire up any of her performances and it's not difficult to spot the platform shoes she wore, and of course, she did up her hair and wore elaborate headgear, including the fruit basket, in order to appear taller. Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons is 4'11", and I recall a few videos back in the day where she'd be wearing some crazy shoes to bring her up a bit higher. Anybody who used to see the old Black Sabbath clips on Night Flight will remember Bill Ward with the long hair with bones in it and a massive beard, atop a huge drum riser. We met Bill a few years ago, and it was a surprise to me to find that he's just a bit shorter than I am, maybe 5'8", and he wasn't breathing fire. A very gentle man today, actually. We've done second row center with Pat Benatar, who's 5', and I remember thinking "How does she not explode?" Years later, we got some time with Ronnie James Dio, and I had the same thought. The man was amazing, see the Dio movie and you'll understand the experience that so many of us had. Oh, and in the KISS picture? Eric Singer is 5'6".

@ were any of those guys 5’6” or under? Klaus was only around 5’6”. I think he had a big voice for coming from a man that size. The same with Tommy Shaw, who stood about 5’6” or under. I already included Dio, who I believe was only 5’4”. These are the heights given for these guy. I guarantee you they are probably shorter than the number they reported. Most men will exaggerate an inch or two when giving their height. I don’t think that Ozzie or Joe Cocker are that short. I don’t really consider those guys as having a big voice. I guess that is more subjective than objective, so believe what you wish. Those are just my subjective opinion.

Udo Dirkschneider of Accept is literally a dwarf, er, “Little Person”. I saw a guy named Eric Sardinas play one night (yawn) and I was a pretty good distance from the stage. All through his (mercifully) short (heh) set, I kept marveling at how he was playing the largest resonator guitar I had ever seen! I mean, that thing was HUGE! Then after his set ended and the lights came up he came walking right by me and he was like 4’9” and 85 pounds. Not even exaggerating. He could’ve been a good jockey. I heard Klaus Meine interviewed on the radio a few months ago and they were pronouncing his name as “mine”. Don’t know if that’s correct or not - I would have guessed “MI nuh”.

Apparently she's got a feisty side to her that will result in dagger eyes if you comment how short she is to her face, or so I've read. Word among fans is that at meet-and-greets, don't try to be funny and say things like "How's the weather down there?" because mucho awkwardness will ensue. Allegedly!

@@ZachAdkinsGuitar Just to be clear... She's a very cool, incredibly smart and articulate 22-year old, and not at all a trouble-maker with a chip on her shoulder. I think people play up the spiciness aspect of her public persona because it's fun to imagine a charismatic rocker, who can command the stage like she does, is physically not intimidating at all in real life, except perhaps when she turns on a dagger stare. She does have a gift of writing biting songs where people who have slighted her or her sisters get some melodic vitriol tossed back in their faces.

I always thought Lemmy from Motorhead was a giant but he was actually 5'10" which isn't short but he wore boots with big heels and chose shorter bands members so he looked taller than he was. Notice how no one in Motorhead was as tall or taller than Lemmy. I wouldn't be surprised if Gene Simmons is really 5ft tall but wears foot long prosthetic leg extensions to make himself appear tall. Other shorts rockers: Ian Paice Deep Purple Joe Lynn Turner Paul Rogers I doubt any of these are above 5'6".

Randy Rhoads was listed as 5'7" but if you see a 39.5" Gibson Les Paul in his hands, there's no way he was more than 5'3".

Depends on the sports. Some short people are very successful in boxing, soccer. Some become actors, scientists, authors, directors and the list goes on.

@youevil9846 Yeah, being short doesn't inherently mean you'll be bad at sports, but it is, nonetheless, a disadvantage. Also, success in sports and having more height in general does make men more attractive, which is the reason for the compensation. It may seem shallow, but you might be surprised how much human behaviour is motivated by s*x.

Glenn Danzig, Paul Rodgers, Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson - I've met them all in person for interviews. None of these persons can be taller than 5 feet 2 inches. I was 4 ft 9 in in the 90s (when i met them) and they all seemed to be more or less my size. I wore high heels when meeting Glenn Danzig and he definitely was smaller than I was. In the mean time I shrunk a bit to 4 ft 6 in, having aged a bit (66+).

I went to NAAM several years ago and the guys I was surprised how short they were were Michael Anthony (Van Halen), Uli Roth (Scorpions / Electric Sun), Max Cslavera (Sepultura / Soulfly etc.), and Devin Townshead (Strapping Youg Lad / Solo artist). On the opposite end Mick Fleetwood was so much taller than almost everyone else he looked like a giant.

Jon Anderson. Alan White was very short also. I always read and was told Chris Squire was around 6'5". I met him in 1996 backstage and he was slightly shorter than me. I'm around 6'1 1/2"

AC/DC are from Australia so, they drank a lot of Fosters. Fosters cand were about twice as big as our 12 oz. cans so, you can't judge his height by that can of beer. Debby Harry, Nigel Harrison, Jon Anderson, Ringo Starr are all short. I'm 6' 9" and I met Debby and Nigel and they were both below shoulder high, to me. I'd say 5' 3", maybe 5' 2". I also met Larry Fast and he's also barely past 5' tall. By the way, I was security for Johnny Winter one night and I would say he's about 6" tall. Davy Jones was about 5' tall. Cheech Marin is short. Henry Rollins is short. He opened for us, one night. Can't think of any others off the top of my head.
