This is so useful! My grandfather definitely taught me how to do this as a kid but I didn’t pay enough attention. Thanks!

Is there a rule of thumb of how much to splice, like ten diameters or so?
@markthebraider6720

Hey! It mostly depends on the material of the rope. As a rule, artificial ropes require more tucks since they are considered slippery. For most applications 3 tucks with natural rope are enough (the splice is very strong, stronger than any knot), while with artificial ropes 5-6 would be used in the same case.

G'day Mark, Great job, thumbs up, you are a good teacher, a well thought out lesson clearly showing me how to get the result I wanted. Again Thanks. However you mention a "long splice" but I can't I find your video of how to do that. Have you done that video? if so do you have a link? Thanks, build.

G'day again Mark, Sorry to bother you but how would I seal off the ends of sisal rope? I had a ball of waxy, oily stuff I was given by an old rope maker some thirty years ago. I recall he mentioned wax, saddle soap and other stuff was in it. I just melted a piece rolled into a cylinder onto the end, dipped my fingers in cold water and shaped it before it cooled, it seemed to last the life of the rope. I still have it, i think however I cannot find the damned thing. Q). How would you do it? MANY thanks in anticipation. beers, build. BTW, a video of how to melt plastic ropes might be useful. I just use a cigarette lighter and fingers dipped in ice water, also a cold beer works well especially if it catches fire although if you drink whisky I'd suggest you don't use that ! ;-)
