1:25 “and of course, The Intel i5.” That’s exactly how most people think about CPUs, with no realization that there are new generations pretty much every year and that a modern i5 or even i3 can run circles around an i7 from five or six generations ago (depending on the type of workload). It’s not really the consumer’s fault. Just insanely poor (or deceptive?) marketing on Intel’s part (AMD does it too, but at least they put a few more specs on the box and make the series / generation slightly more obvious).
@hammerth142127 күн бұрын
Definitely deceptive. I still see 11th gen prebuilts for way too much money in brick and mortar stores occasionally. 11th gen doesn't have to be bad, quite the opposite, but clear labelling and a reflection in price would be wonderful.

The price for this "Core" model ($999) looks ok. Trying to pick the same exact components on PC Part Picker came out to $1090, but also has the odd standout of the Power Supply currently being $185 only on Amazon. There's definitely room to get the same performance for less money, but this does have the benefit of detailed guides for the exact hardware and a support system.

For anyone wondering on the value and don't want to look up each part. I did it for you. I didn't check the more expensive packages but for a beginner kit the value is 100% spot on. Could you do better on your own? Of course, ebay and other market places exist for used stuff. @SciFiDude79 However, if all the hard work is done for you, you really won't develop any relevant abilities like choosing all the compatible parts or even which parts work best for you, and arguably don't even learn how to build a computer, just how to assemble the one you were given by following the guide.
@DK-210Ай бұрын
Having a little bit of experience will usually inspire people to learn more about the process. There are many unintuitive rules to PC building that would keep a lot of people away from ever trying. As someone who has been in tech for 20 years, it is a PITA to keep up with all the changes in hardware.
@randomdestructnАй бұрын
assembly is a big skill. it doesn't seem like to it someone in the know, but for a complete noob its very difficult

@@randomdestructn But it really isn't at all tho, everything is standardized and keyed properly so there is really no way to plug anything wrong apart from the front panel connectors and you won't be killing any components. Ай бұрын
@@DK-210 Sure, but like I said you won't develop any of the core competences that make it advantageous to build a PC. One must put the necessary research into it or else there's no point in building it yourself apart from familiarizing yourself with the purely mechanical assembly process and overcoming the initial fear of doing something wrong.

Yep, thermal paste everywhere sounds about right. There's a 90% chance you get thermal paste on your fingers taking the cap off the syringe or putting it back on because the stuff is so goopy and it always sticks to the tip. And for most first time builders. I remember when i built my first LGA socket system. It made no sense. What do you mean i have to press down the CPU with the lever on those delicate pins? Wont the pins bend and break?. That's why i always liked PGA better. The pins were bigger and more solid on the CPU and the motherboard had holes for the pins. These days everything is unfortunately LGA so there's no choice. Another thing that is scary for first time builder is the CPU cooler clamping force. I remember back in the days even with stock cooler i had to really push the pins to get it to clamp down. I was afraid i was going to bend the motherboard. Even more so with aftermarket cooler.
@PiterDeVriesАй бұрын
@@Raivo_K no, PGA is inferior to LGA. Back in the day, I damaged a CPU (Pentium 4 478) while trying to remove a cooler from motherboard. Thermal paste acted like a glue, so I end up ripping off CPU out of a socket with cooler attached, but one of pins torn off and left in a socket. Was not a good experience at all.
@benwu7980Ай бұрын
Building pc's and servers for 30+ years, Installing cpu's never get less scary.
@Raivo_KАй бұрын
@@PiterDeVries That does not make PGA inferior. It is a well known fact the the cooler should be removed after running a synthetic load so that the paste is still warm by twisting and turning the cooler. Even in the event you described re-soldering the pin to the CPU is way easier than trying to fix multiple delicate LGA pins. There are even special metal frames being sold that prevent the CPU from lifting from the socket when removing the cooler.

you know, after the thermal paste all over her fingers I understood that some people just can't handle even basic painting instructions to not touch the fresh paint and keep themselves clean so I am happy the level here is higher to show that for something much scarier than a cheap paint - a whole PC, can still be built by a newcomer even if they aren't "generally handy"

Sarah probably enjoyed her first few PC builds alot more than I did, LOL. I've not built many more systems than she has but have much more knowledge with how the hardware functions and what parts to choose. To me spending endless research on parts and cost and performance is all the fun in PC building. The ACTUAL building just takes an hour if you know what you are doing, even without instructions. When I did my first 3 builds or more, it literally took me all day to figure out the mechanics of it. Then it became more innate. Sarah would benefit from watching 6 years of LTT videos, that's what made the physical building a piece of cake for me. It is funny how I often don't take my own advice. One time I bought a bad PSU. Another time I got the literally cheapest board on the market in my current build. The AsRock B450 Pro. Oh ya, my version can't do 3200 and I had to painstakingly troubleshoot to realize 3000 mhz was best. And upgrading the CPU from 2nd gen to 5th gen really changed how the memory functioned and the timings needed. The greatest thing about that CPU upgrade was no longer needing to OC for the best performance! Precision boost makes a HUGE difference. My old 1600 AF was all core 3.7ghz, the max boost speed of the chip, and what a pain in the ass that was. But again, part of the fun of OC'ing is experimenting and learning. In this build I played with voltage settings for the first time, that stuff can be magical.
