Shortening suit jacket sleeves (with a miter)

How to shorten jacket sleeves, I promise it’s easier than you might think! Covers non mitered corners also.

Thanks for your advice, just done it and it’s brilliant. (After measuring with ruler I tacked along the line turned it to make sure it was finishing up correctly before any cutting).

I usually use the ladder stitch, very invisible! I think I have a video of that too?

So, I just had sleeves altered on a sport coat. I think I am going to request a re-do. The finish was not mitered and the 1st and 4th button were sewn through and knotted up inside, visible on the lining. Do you think my request is fair and reasonable?

I think that would depend on whether it was mitered in the first place. When I did it at a tailor shop we just replaced what was there. As for the buttons, it negates the extra flap on the lining if they are stitched through, but that is only a problem if it’s pulling weird 😅

Thanks for your prompt reply. I cannot recall if the original style was mitered but it seems that is the current trend with the brand and industry. The sewn knots feel pointy and now the lining are not able to move freely, drapes free flowing. I don't think I like this style of craftmanship or lack of. I think I will take it back today and ask for my request for a re-do.

​@@onthetrailcreations8638❤ Update: While showing the discrepancies to the sales associate, I found another error. There was a triangle mark made by an iron above where the seams met near the cuff seam. Well, they agreed to replace the sport coat with a new one.

What about narrowing slim when it is too wide and too long??? Most of the time after shortening suit sleeves the opening become too wide.

It’s like home improvement, once you start, there’s a chain reaction of other issues 🤪 There is often another seam in jacket sleeves so that would be the place to do that. But it’s also not usually too drastic, so I’m not sure I’ve ever found it worth it 😅 I do it all the time with pants though 🤷‍♀️ But a jacket isn’t going to be perfect unless it fits off the rack, or is custom made. Shortening also affects where the elbow is, but it’s not always worth following the chain 😂😅
