That's why it's called normalization, not a slippery slope. Introduce new better standard, when people are acclimated to it then change it further to an even better one, even though it clearly begs the question if it even is better, advocated for by activists. It's the intentional progressive ever march onward. The idea that history in general and societies move ever onward. That it doesn't ever take a step backwards. slippery slope is the idea of unintentional consequences. slippery slope is still a fallacy, normalization is not, and people should use instead when describing this concept, avoiding (or trying to) the fallacy accusation.

"Slippery slope fallacy" doesn't mean there's no such thing as a slippery slope, it just means it's an overused and often flawed means of argumentation. But the irony is that the more common fallacy these days is to dismiss a slippery slope argument as a fallacy without actually explaining the flaw in logic.

The amazing thing is that it isn’t true either. The curren market is diverse in race and gender, ready to watch kids shows and video nasties, fine with personal dramas and mindless action shows, wants to watch something in English and something with subtitles, something that looks amazingly real and something that looks like it was rendered on a Playstation… so long as the plot is good. etc. This “current audience” they think exists doesn’t. Because all these properties are dying chasing the gold at the end of the rainbow. I think what they mean is “the audience you will be” as if their media is a boot camp making ideological soldiers.

That's why they call themselves progressives in the first place, it's wordplay to manipulate stupid people. Progressivism appears to be about *velocity* in the direction of the net summation of their ideals in the moment, but is more about the *acceleration* in that direction. It is how over correction happens, and it also means that the rate of change itself is increasing. Despite the video and common understanding alluding to "current year", AZ stumbled upon something even more correct by saying current day. Progress's rate of change has increased so much, even within the same year, moral expectations even at the start of the same year seem archaic.

That's USUALLY how it is for everyone. People tend to be very liberal when they're young because you have nothing to your name and the premise of getting free shit from others who've spent they're lives accruing things, is enticing. But once you get older, and start accruing things yourself, you want to be the one to decide what to do with those things and you will do whatever you can to hold onto those things (this assumes everything you have, you accrued through honest means, and not grifting. Grifters ALWAYS need to grift to remain afloat afterall) It's why older people trend conservative. They're trying to keep the things they've spend they're lives acquiring to pass on to their next of kin.

The most frustrating part of this phenomenon is that after people shout others down with forthright conviction, telling them they're stuck in the dark ages and that this new, current year ideology is the correct one... And then 10+ years down the line when this ideology is considered problematic, any attempts to call out this behaviour falls on deaf ears. "It was a different time back then. I was young. Why are you being so petty?" So get up on your soapbox and turn on the spotlight, speak with the utmost conviction, then in 10 years time berate the very people who believed what you said because they didn't change their opinions at the exact time you did which makes them bad, and they're NOT allowed to call you out on what you _used_ to say. Now you've got a new soapbox with new followers, and the cycle starts all over again. Ah... Brilliant.

It's a view that the people of the past need to suffer the consequences of slighting my modern sensibilities, but, when I'm in the past, nobody can judge me for failing to keep to their standards, because I am a product of my own times. Like sexual censorship is nothing new, even the "greater good" and "protection of women" justifications aren't different. You might say the people are different, because back then it was religious nutjobs and it's now woke nutjobs but they both pray at the altar of an ideology that they follow uncritically. So I just wonder, in ~2030 when it becomes culturally acceptable to sexualize women again, are they going to bring back the old designs?

@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116 True, I'm personally not at all a fan of universal healthcare. As someone who was born and lived his entire life in a country that has it, it's not great at all. The doctors are often not very good at their jobs and they tend to misdiagnose or give wrong medicine as well as wrong amounts of it. It's especially bad if the doctors in question are young and inexperienced. That's also without mentioning the fact that you often have to endure very long lines of people waiting for their turns to go inside the doctor's office just to get an appointment with one. And if you have a personal doctor who you go to regularly to be prescribed medicine, then you better pray that they don't go on a vacation at the worst moment, because chances are that that doctor might not have a replacement at all and you'll be forced to wait 'till they're back. Anyway, I was throwing the "I wonder if it's at all possible to somehow slowly shift towards universal healthcare in the US" comment out purely out of interest in how that could ever be possible. People are really quick to say how great it would be to have it that they never talk about how it could ever be forced onto the entire country without causing massive complications.

More information, studies, stories of people afflicted with the disease, research, etc., has been done in the 15 year period. Current Year arguments are more towards social science arguments, philosophy, and general political policy than the "harder" sciences. That's the whole point. You use the "current year" to be able to say things should have progressed in philosophical quandaries via the time that has elapsed due to superficial reasons.

I’m wondering is the “current year” phenomenon became a thing due to tepid developments in our society. Think about it… in 30 short years, we went from 16 bit consoles to everyone carrying a miniature computer that’s constantly connected to the internet and everyone has the capability to scream their brain rot into the void. Some of those screams are bound to come together and get heard. And so, due to rapid development of technology and also morality, people don’t really have time to adapt or escape their past statements that are now super “problematic”. Add onto that a feeling of nostalgia and it gets even worse.

"Current year" focus is one way of warning off that smart-alec history-buff nephew from saying "told you so". Last year my aunt proclaimed with quavering voice she resolutely Stands With Ukraine. Recently she changed her profile pictures to righteously Demand a Pause in Palestine. I haven't the heart to remind her of her litany of regrettable jingo beginning with the invasion of Afghanistan.

What's funny to me is that, they shit on the 90's pretty hard... But the 90's were actually pretty nice. The cold war ended fully, most people didn't give a shit about what you said, and the golden age of gaming came to be. Current year, we're at WW3 getting heated up in the microwave, free speech being essentially dead, and video game companies dropping dogshit after dogshit and wondering why they don't get money back. I dunno, can't convince me the 90's sucked.

I hate the current year crap so much. Humanity hardly "progresses". We're perpetually stuck in the same vicious cycle that goes through a new flavor each decade. You can't give me a single large scale issue that was "solved" that hasn't come back to bite us in the ass in some way or another. It's why I try to encourage most people to focus on their own local or personal problems that actually CAN be changed in a short time by one person. I don't think it's truly impossible to reduce any big issue we have as a whole, I just think the process is completely different from what these people seem to think. This shit isn't one puzzle that can be solved in a handful of moves, it's a horrible situation that can only be improved, never fixed. You want to have a positive effect on the world? Improve yourself, and stop trying to affect more than what's around you. Stop thinking about us all as a single collective being. Times weren't worse or better back in the day, they were different. Some people were better, others worse. All we can really do is try to be the former, and hopefully prevent our friends and family from being the latter.

A reasonable person hears "the past was different" and concludes that their subjective moralities can't possibly transcend time and so must alter them to match the past and present. The fools conclude that everyone was simply wrong and that the new must be correct and anything else would be backwards progress. The thing is the fools don't actually believe that because if they did then simply coming up with an argument that touches on the same topics but is more novel should be all that is needed to refute them.

heels vs babyface makes a good point about really rooting a product into a current political or social climate with things like pronouns etc etc. You run a real risk of having said product not age well and also be more likely to be censored or for people to whine and moan about it in the years to come if the political or social climate changes. I remember after i saw Top Gun Maverick thinking that there is nothing that really ties it to a specific period of time (when it was made i mean). If you told someone that didnt know about it that it was made 15 years ago, there is really nothing in there that would be able to clue them in otherwise, Its just a really damn good movie and in another 15 years nobody would be able to look back on it and think what the hell the director/writers were thinking or what were they smoking like i know a lot of things made today will be thought as.

People saying they are, "on the right side of history," are the same as people who vehemently claim they are, "a good person." 9/10 they aren't because a good person or a person on the right side of history don't have to shove said proclemation down other's throats.

2:35 this guy, as childish as he was with his lash out, is without a doubt right. Right now most of the gaming industry is "politics first, story 4th and gameplay 14th if any" they even pay disgusting companies amounts of money they don't even wanna disclose to ensure the game is diverse and politically correct, it's awful.
