some people are vehemently disagreeing with me, a select few are mad. here's my reply: by the end of the video i make it clear that "get woke go broke" is referring to a real phenomenon but it's not as simple as it sounds, as competent talented people can still be woke and still create good things. the wokeness isn't enough on its own generally, there have to be other problems, like financial trouble, or a lack of creativity or talent or skill. wokeness is an amplifying variable to an already-collapsing property, but usually not the cause of the collapse. Sometimes, of course, it just is, though. but to answer the OG question, is "Get Woke Go Broke" real? i mean, in a lot of cases, it's not that simple, but when you boil it down... yeah.

Why not mention the fact that Rise of Skywalker grossed much less than The Last Jedi? The whole point of get woke go broke isn't iron clad failure, the point is that over time it WILL gain less money. The last Jedi was much more woke than the previous movie, but the previous movie still had (undeserved) good will. More people were going to see it. However, the Rise of Skywalker(while still profitable due to the name brand) grossed less than the last movie. Not to mention the oversaturation effect in conjunction with the woke shit is causing less people to see the spin offs. I am willing to bet all my savings that Captain Marvel 2 fails.

I think it will depend on your definition of fails. Add in they positioned the first Captain Marvel in a spot where if you missed it you were lead to believe you would likely miss out on something critical to the bigger plot. A lot of it was taking advantage of the investment people had already put in; it wasn't like a normal movie to take or leave, it was like the penultimate episode of a TV serial. How Captain Marvel 2 falls into the broader storyline will make a huge difference whether it's a success or failure. I fully agree with the bigger point you were making here.

The thing that always annoyed me about Miranda's objectification is that it was part of the plot. The illusive man specifically chose her to be the human face of Ceeberus and she was essentially supposed to seduce Shepherd so they'd have a more favourable view of the organisation. Those lewd camera angles are there to try and act out that goal in a way that works within the limitations of ME2 as a game. By making her seem more attractive to the player it makes her more attractive to Shepherd by proxy. But of course, the woke left hate the idea that a woman deliberately objectifies herself. I personally always thought the angles were cheesy, even though I did romance her. I concur. I have played many games that had gay or secretly gay characters and it had no bearing on them as a character at all. Sometimes it was played up humorously and other times it was just a little easter egg but did it hinder my gameplay experience? Nope. In fact it sometimes made the games more fun (for being a little outlandish) or it just added a detail about them.

Having LGBT or minority characters alone doesn't make a media woke. There's a shallowness, shortsightedness, cattiness and/or condescension that's present in woke media that goes along with the representation. Things like changing Iceman's sexuality, then making him into a 90s sitcom level gay stereotype while calling anyone who didn't like the switch a homophobe is woke. Celeste as you described it isn't woke as far as I'm concerned, despite it being about coming out. X-Men comics ain't exactly doing 90s numbers nowadays while Celeste sold really great.

Celeste has general applicability. Even if the creator wants to claim it's specifically about transitioning, in a vacuum the game is about dealing with your own personal demons and accomplishing something seemingly insurmountable literally despite yourself. It's something a lot of people can relate to even if they're not LGBT. With other woke media there is no general applicability. It exists for an extremely specific niche, and if you're not in that niche you're either not welcome at all or you'll only be let in so you can be lectured at. For a group of people who are supposedly anti-gatekeeping, they gatekeep harder than anyone else even within the works they create.

Overall it had good ideas but failed on the execution in some ways (Catra didn't really deserve redemption imo, the ending was abrupt, not even a cameo or mention of He-Man). It's no The Last Airbender for sure but it was a solid show imo, worth a watch.

Rick James they only make huge bank, when their brand was already a powerhouse, so they can ride on it‘s back even with trash stories and/or woke politics. Star Wars is a good example. Star Wars didn‘t became the pop culture juggernaut it is known for, because of the disney movies. It already was one, long before Disney aquired the franchise. Does Disney still make huge amounts of money with that brand despite their politics? Yes. Did they make less money with the latest movies? Yes. Are their new movies popular? Not among most fans for sure. Could Disney have made much more bank? Yes, definitely. The only reason Disney made so much bank with their first two movies is because people didn‘t expect the movies to be so shit yet. People still had hope. After TLJ, all the following movies made significantly less money, because people finally lost interest. Look at ROS and the Solo movie. We can thank the creators of TCW & Mandalorian, that the brand isn‘t on death row yet.

Rick James Well, everything they hated was justified though. Ewoks are trash and don‘t belong to Star Wars. The new trilogy complete shat on everything Star Wars was loved for. Rey was simply a bad character and a prime example of mary sue. Ridicilously powerful from the get go, perfect in any way while having nothing else to offer. The new Battlefront games deserved every bit of hate. BF1 was an unfininished pile of shit with mediocre gameplay and stupid dlc politic. BF2 was trash because of the early lootbox system and the lack of content. It became a good game later on though. The prequels didn‘t deserve the amount of hate back then but they still deserved some hate at least. The first two movies were such a waste of potential. The first movie was boring until the finale. The second movie suffered from bad writing (Anakin being the worst offender) Episode III was great though, and definitely one of the best Star Wars films. Rogue One wasn‘t hated as far as I know. Most people thought it was decent. Solo simply suffered from the TLJ shitshow.

These are all examples of taking successful franchises, IP's, comics, movies, etc etc and injecting wokeism. They make money on inertia / name brand recognition. Creating brand new IP's that are woke at the start? Tell me those that are successful without accounting tricks, tax write-offs, government grants, soldout movie theatres that are at the same time *EMPTY* etc etc. Discovery & Picard - tax write offs and streaming services mean audience numbers can be hidden or outright lied about. It continues because of a demand for 'content' at best, and a visceral hatred of the original source material - a desire to replace it with the new stuff. The ultimate end is that when people think of "Star Trek" they think of these two series, rather than, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, or any of the films. Batwoman - everyone sees the decline in viewership, CW cannot hide it's unpopularity, it continues because of tax-write-off necessities and the demand for 'content. Captain Marvel *ONLY* succeeded because it was part of the MCU. If it had somehow been the first film, the MCU would have been stillborn - if not dealt with by a morning after pill. Terminator - crashed and burned. Comic Book Sales - crashing through the floor, where top selling titles of today would be canceled in the early 80's and 90's for poor sales. There are many more examples, but people see the point...

It’s that the long-term damage to the IP, to the brand, to the reputation will chase off consumers in the end. And that IS true - Every Star Wars movie made less than the previous release. The cranks at BBC destroyed Doctor Who so much that the show very well may be canceled and go on hiatus. Comics are booted and rebooted, re-numbered, and special edition’d to hide their failures. How much sales data did TLOU2 release after the first week? Zero. Gillette lost almost 11% in the quarter that they released the stupid toxic masculinity campaign. They still have not re-captured all of that market share. Star Trek has spun off and then immediately killed so many side shows that it is hard to keep track. Ghostbusters 2016 was a disaster. Charlie’s Angels was a disaster. Birds of Prey was a disaster. The killed off Westworld, despite strong initial acclaim and scripting. They bastardized the watchmen, only to quietly bury it once the ratings went to shit. Season seven and especially eight of Game of Thrones will go down in cinematic history as one of the worst destructions of an IP in history. Brie Larson was demoted in her own sequel. And let’s not even go into the week over week ratings for CW shows. While the statement is not universally true, it is a valid first order approximation.

Yes, but a lot of those projects and companies you mention are still massively economically successful, and even the ones that weren't often held their own in terms of their peers in the marketplace, that's why applying "broke" is, at best a gross oversimplification and a first order example of hyperbole. Solo was still a top 10 finisher at the box office for it's year, Star Trek hasn't "killed off" a spin off since Enterprise, Ghostbusters 2016 actually outearned (the IMHO vastly superior) Afterlife at the box office, Game of Thrones is still a driver for HBO and getting active spin off development etc. etc. Did many of those projects turn off some fans? Those fans then go on to influence popular culture in their own ways and eventually it reaches a critical mass where it is now a "cool" thing and then like an apocalyptic flood the mainstream demographic floods into the scene. The now profitable and popular industry is then flooded by corporate money and advertising and then slowly it is beveled down by those who fear controversy until it reaches the corporate media stage. At that point the disaffected and disillusioned creators and fans who made the industry in the first place jump ship to another niche and the cycle repeats. A plant grows into a flower and then that flower becomes a fruit and then that fruit rots and the plant dies only to regrow next year.

Regarding Castlevania. It's definitely woke, but not in the way that that nutjob Billy was calling it. Also compare the hype of season 2 and 3 to season 4. For example a woman of color (Greta) is the leader of Wallachian village and she is also happens to be an incredibly skilled fighter. It is never explained how or why she came in that position of power or why her village is so diverse. This is quite odd, since modern day Romania is mostly white and very few women held any power back in the middle ages. There's also no real reason for her to be adept at monster fighting, after all Trevor trained all his life and Alucard and Sypha are magic people. It's clear that the show writers just wanted a badass woman of color without actually doing the leg work to properly establishing her in the world. Putting that aside the main flaws of the show don't come from the wokeness but the terrible writing: the show is filled with plotholes, the laws of physics apply selectively, the main cast has level 100 plot armor and characters just keep forgetting what abilities they have.

It's a question of honesty and relevance, really. Take Mordhau, for example. That game's been touted as a haven for alt-righters and whatnot because it appeals to a very specific niche of players, who tend to share certain values and ideas. It's a pseudo-medieval swordfighting game with an emphasis on authenticity and filling the niche that Chivalry left open. Now, regarding this game - from what I recall - the character creator didn't offer any really dark skin colors, because apparently the game takes a far more eurocentric approach...'Cause that's where we got most medieval and rennaissance armor designs from. Of course games urinalists got mad about that one and called the people in charge and their customers a bunch of names for also not wanting female characters shoved into their pseudo-medieval swordfighting game. You could still have "representation" if you implemented a bunch of middle-eastern themed cosmetics and weaponry ALONG with darker skin tones and I bet you, no one would raise a stink about it, because it wouldn't be "diversity" for the sake of "diversity". It would be a fitting and thematic addition relevant to the game's core of being a pseudo-medieval swordfighting game. By the way, Mordhau's a great game, you should play it if you enjoy pseudo-medieval swordfighting games or liked Chivalry and don't want to support Chivalry 2 being an EGS exclusive.

I think that you're underestimating the franchise damage that these "get woke" products have on future products. Every Star Wars movie got less money than the one before. Solo lost money. They managed to ressurect it a bit with the Mandalorian, but then they fired Gina Carrano. And Captain Marvel was buoyed by the fact that it was deliberately placed directly in the middle of Infinity War and Endgame and marketed as an essential part of the story. Not only that but the inclusion of a gay character is not necessarily woke. Sexuality is not relevant to the MC's mission in Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight follows that loose rule. You could easily go through the game without even knowing there are gay characters in it. You have to specifically exhaust dialogue and do side quests to get both of those barely present inclusions. It's laughable to call that woke (edit) *even if nothing like that was included in a precious title.* On the other hand, a great example of a woke game would be the TLOU2. There is an overbearing lesbian romance that could frankly have been removed entirely without changing the game's main plot in any meaningful way. In fact, a close friend may have filled the early game role better than a lover and put a greater impetus on Ellie to go after Joel's killer despite the earlier failed attempt.

I actually want to add to what Dev said, you can still write and create something as an Indie. But if you're lacking motivation, the only thing I can think of is unironically just doing it (writing the story). Now by that, I don't mean that you just go "okay" and then it happens. I mean actually do it as not a job, but as a Hobby if you aren't feeling motivated for it, which I can only assume and project from a previous personal place, is due to the fear of it not being possible. If you do it as a Hobby, you will have done "something", which can go towards making you gain new skills if you actually care for it, and with it being a hobby, there is less strain on it being something you "have" to do. It is also good for personal happiness reasons, as it being on paper can help you have a semblance of "satisfaction" whenever you return to work further on it. Additionally, you can work on separate documents connected to the story where you lay out thing like world building, characters and plot significances even if you believe yourself to know them, as it makes it easier to remember what your world and story is, thus making it harder for you to accidentally break the story with a plot hole or inconsistency. But this is more for if you care about it in "that" sense. And if you want to publish your work for feedback from others, then you might have to do this process for smaller projects over the "main" thing, which you could release in a chapter by chapter basis, but even that might be too stressful for what is but a hobby. In particular, doing other things to engage yourself with different fanbases and communities, like with some writing site (Don't know personally if something this specific exists and is actually good at drawing in attention), then you can grow yourself as a person while doing something you hopefully like. Don't take that thing about publishing too seriously, as I am not a person who does or cares for that, and would as such not have any actual experience in it. But I recommend it, as it isn't a bad hobby to have at all, and if its something you have always wanted to do, it should lend some "piece of mind" to you personally. Again, really just up to you, but I especially recommend literally just doing it, even if you don't publish your work.

I feel like SFO misses what "wokeness" is. It isn't just about having left wing ideas in your media, nor just about having a character who is a minority. It's when you abandon all else for those ideas and identity. Having a well written lesbian or gay character isn't woke. Having a character who's entire purpose in the story is being gay or lesbian is woke. Representation for the sake of representation is woke. Building a story and letting characters flow naturally into it isn't. A woke story decides the representation first and tries to shove the story around that. The story also has to remind people of far left values at every chance it gets and remind people how awful whites, men and straight people are. Success is relative in a way. Celeste is massively well made and very successful. Just playing the game trans isn't shoved at you, the developer just explained it outside the game. A woke game however is, thirsty sword lesbians(?)(names are hard to remember). The game is explicit in its title, does poorly with sales, has a very insulting dev team that calls anyone who is slightly different politically fascists. That's a woke game. It's also a failure. Get woke go broke applies more to smaller companies than larger simplify because of things like stakeholder markets rather than shareholder markets. I'm too tired to properly explain but it's basically a very well researched "theory" on why exactly all the culture war and mass wokeness started. Has to do with wall street protests and a bunch of other weird stuff.

I think SFO is totally missing the point with Hollow Knight. People who are fed up with "Wokeness" generally do not hate or care about Gay content or characters. They've been around in Media for decades without many complaints. It's about how they're handled. Wokeism on the other hand is using Marxism to interject varying cultural ideals into content, even if it's at the cost of the quality of the content they're being added to. Putting politics above selling a good product. Nevermind the Bible-Thumping-esque writing that is built upon pandering with token characters rather than quality characters that everyone can enjoy regardless of their sexual orientations. I also think SFO sort-of-kind-of glossed over that a lot of the complaints about "Wokeism" around movies or games didn't actually come from the products, but the press around them, comments by the creators and publishers, and marketing. (He touches on it a bit but I think he passed over the point). I think this video is dangerously conflating LGBQT content, which is not inherently Marxist, with Woke Culture, which is inherently Marxist. The LGBQT community is being used as a weapon or tool for Marxist gains, at their own expense.

I think the joker movie was also a bit of a commentary on the failings of modern society. That Joker is not the product of comic book shenanigans. He is the product a society that has failed at every turn. That Joker, in my opinion, is the supervilian that can become real. Heck, we have probably seen several "Jokers" if we take a look through police records about mentally unstable criminals. That is why I liked the film. It felt more in tune with reality, and I appreciated that fact. It was interesting, different even.

I think it is real to some extent. Ayden Paladin did a great long video about the phenomenon too. Basically boycotts and buycotts don't work. But giving people a negative conception of your band does have long term effects. I also saw another video the other day talking about how the Manga of Demon Slayer sold more copies than EVERY OTHER US comic. Now there are some other reasons for this. Like If you want to read Spiderman or any other major Hero it is hard to know where to start and you need to do a lot of research before even reading a new run. While with manga you start from issue one and go from their along with other reasons... But I can't help but think the main reason why Demon Slayer more copies EVERY OTHER US comic is because. Many Comics now are woke garbage see the new Captain America being written by the awful race ta nehisi coates bashing on Jordan B Peterson. While Manga is not...Comics gate was a real thing and it did have consequences I think Demon Slayer out selling every other US Comic. Another example I can think of is the NBA's viewership dispite being in the middle of a global pandemic with nothing else to do and watch fell to all time lows (same with various award shows too) and the reason according to I think a Gallup poll is people said the NBA got to political and was hypocritical with it's ties to China.

"Get Woke, Go Broke" is real, but the issue is that it is just a new name for an old concept. If you replace "going woke" with "increasing inefficiencies," then the process fits nicely into economic and evolutionary theory. A good example is the American car industry. Union gains made American car manufacturers extremely inefficient, but the companies still functioned when there was no outside competition. The American car industry only imploded when Japan was able to import better cars at cheaper prices due to the much more effective competition. Wokeness is doing a similar thing in media. It has hallowed out and weakened everything it touches, but only those things that have to compete with an outside force collapses. Comic Books collapses because manga was right there producing better products. Hollywood hasn't collapses because there is no outside force to push it. In those situations, it will only collapses due to its own weight. Star Wars may prove to be the prime example. The movies have made billions of dollars, but Disney spent billions more buying the rights to Star Wars. Disney may ultimately lose money in the long run. It needs around a dozen movies to make a billion dollars to turn a profit, not just three. They are now in a position where they have to rebuild a franchise if they actually want to make a profit with it and only time will tell if they can make it work.

I wouldn't say Celeste is "Woke" just because it has themes related to coming out as trans. Struggling with your identity and sense of self is a pretty universally relatable theme. Also just having gay or trans characters in your media shouldn't qualify you as making a Woke thing, the fact that neither game go about waving teh flags and proselytising the religion of LGBTQ+ but rather just treats them like people is proof that on at least some level they reject the ideological fanaticism. You also see this with historical figures (ex. Achilles and Patroclus). Especially with historical figures, tbh, I'm not sure if this is just because we are becoming hyperfocused on homosexuality and judging things for what they are not, or if our previous interpretations were clouded by past homophobia, and only now can we recognize the truth. Castlevania only really makes people with any knowledge as to Romania angry. Seriously the fact that the writters ignored everything about the setting they were using and just wrote what they wanted really shows. They didn't even make the priests orthodox. There are scenes like an openly Bisexual woman for example but it's not wokery it's forced modern ideas, cause the writers have no knowledge of how people acted before 1990s.

They also utterly destroyed Hector, a main character who is part of the official canon timeline and only barely beat Isaac, Death and Dracula on his own. In fact, it's Julia who saves him at the end since he's so worn out and devastated he can barely move and escape the crumbling castle. The writers, The Deatz brothers and Warren, ignored the canon and basically did their own thing with the property, even brow beating the work of the original Japanese writer who helped them write season one. They have tools and the resources to succeed, but they purposely foregoed them for their own selfish intent and bastardized it into something it was not. Sure they used elements from the canon, but at the end of the day, its just flash and nostalgia to cover up the flimsy and rotted interior of it.

I was okay with them changing up the story from the original, when adapting it has to be that the story is altered by the medium. However they did not adapt after the first part they mostly just wrote what they wanted to write, more fanfiction that adaptation even if such comparisons have become meaningless now.

This is why I've taken a strong liking to anime over western media. Despite the troupes, anime has significantly more original ideas than western media. This is mostly due to how it is feasible for a nobody to get their original story made into an anime. Holywood just seems to be recirculating their old ideas and only people with connections get a chance to make anything.
