I actually had a 16 inch 6.5 creedmoor Howa barreled action from Brownells. The velocities I saw weren’t as low as I thought they’d be. With handloads I could get a 140gr up to about 2550-2600. I ended up taking the barrel off and using the action for something else but I’ve thought about building another shorty Creedmoor.

Just recently ordered a Howa 1500 16.25” 6.5cm with heavy bull barrel a couple of weeks ago and that thing is incredible fun to shoot. Great video man. I used a 21" .308 SAKO 75 with a BR Tuote reflex suppressor for several sniper instructor courses in Finland. Overall length of the rifle in a McMillan A4 was the same as yours. I had to unscrew the can to install or remove the TRG bipod. They had cut a TRG bipod receptacle into the front of the A4, which was cool. The overall rifle was actually really lightweight since it was a true featherweight barrel, but it maintain POI all day, day-after-day in defiance of all that I thought I knew.

Your channel kicks ass bro, it has quickly become my favorite shooting channel on youtube. I recently gained access to a range where we can get out to 1350 yards. I see a big difference in bullet selection with my 6.5 CM at extended range. The 135 A-Tips are on my short list to try, so far I'm most impressed with Berger 140 Hybrid Target bullets. Regarding the Hornady A-Tip, I like that as a handloader, I can likely gain some speed by dropping down to the 135's. I'm currently around 2,800 FPS with a 24" barrel using RL16 with the Bergers. As you said consistent velocity is huge. I'm trying to keep my SD under 10 FPS, still a work in progress.

I built a 16” 6.5 gas gun with a Wilson combat barrel. It shoots a ragged hole at 100 and I’ve chrono’d it at 2590-2620 with some 140gr nosler match ammo. I haven’t had a chance to shoot far like you do but man it’s a small light and snappy rifle even with a 762 RC2 on it. If you spend some time on ballistics apps, you’ll find 6.5cm out of a 16” will actually be shooting flatter than a .308 out of a 20” barrel. It’s a neat round. .308 is still plenty relevant and effective too tho.

I've not watched the vid yet but I LOVE the 16.5" 6.5 Creedmoor. We are running the 147gr ELD-Ms out of a 16.5" Surgeon Rifle We are at 2495fps using 2209 (H4350) Out of our 24" barrel, we can only get 2710fps. Tangible benefits over an 8" longer barrel just doesn't exist. Less drop sure, but only .1Mil difference for wind drift in an average 10kph right to left wind. I'd love to see you re-do this with some of the heavies and see what you get.
@LRRPFco52 Жыл бұрын
The 123gr and 130gr are more point-and-click effect due to less torque and minimal sight picture disturbance. I started shooting the .260 Rem in the 2000s with 139gr Scenar, 140gr A-MAX, and 142gr SMK. Tried the 130gr Berger and didn't look back. Fast, flat, within .1 mils drift of the 140s. So much easier to manage the sight picture.
@zigjib Жыл бұрын
@@LRRPFco52 That hasn't been my experience. The heavier projies provided longer range due to mass and inertia retention. We are using a 1/7 twist though. The lighter bullets are flatter but shorter range in the shorter barrels. I've not really noticed a sizeable difference in recoil. I'm sure it's there because physics, but it really wasn't something that was overly worth considering

130gr and lower are much easier to manage behind the scope. Too much torque with 140s and above if you want to spot your own hits. 123gr Scenar and SMK do really well, very flat, still easy to see splash and hear impact. They'll easily do 2700-2750fps from a 16" 6.5-08 class cartridge.

A friend of mine was trying to zero with the same Winchester ammo. The projectiles they use are pretty awesome. But upon looking at the ammo, you could physically see that the ogives were sat at different depths. The groups were well over an inch and a half. i gave him four factory Hornady140gr ELDMs and they went into the size of a nickle. Winchester is coming closer to making good ammo (using a good projectile) but they still have some work to do. Nice to see the pristene getting some love as well as finally seeing an outlier barrel. I'm glad I stumbled onto your video. I just started load development for an 18" 6.5 Creedmoor. It took me a while to get it in my head the velocities are going to be much less than the published data since most of the loads are based on 24" barrels. The lighter bullets can almost match the book velocities up until a certain point then they stall and my 142 SMK load actually lost 100 fps with a 1 grain increase of H 4350 ( 41.0 grains) however it shot a half moa 5 shot group at 100 yds the velocity average was 2552 fps. One grain less ( 40.0 grains ) was average of 2612 the group was slightly larger than half moa but the rifle was brand new it seems to be shooting better the more rounds I am putting through it. I have a SRT Shadow suppressor I keep on it doing load tests. I don't think it changes the velocities any I haven't tried shooting without the can and I use a Magnetospeed as well. I also have a 16.5" 308 I need to do some load work on that should be fun. I never have chronographed any of its loads just load and shoot mostly 150 grain bullets in it. The barrel is a Sendero mated to a 98 Mauser action. Only used for deer hunting and pigs and I dabbled with subsonics using Trail Boss powder but stick to a 300 Whisper for that kind of work. Too easy and same results with the Whisper or Blackout. My 6.5 varmint loads are 95 V Max I have gotten them to 3000 fps using several different powders and Alpa and Hornady cases. I stopped at 3000 and are still way below max book loads and also with 100 grain Sierra hollow points both have good 100 yard accuracy. I just started a new load with 105 grain Sierra Tipped Varminter bullets I should be able to get them close to 3000 without any problems. I have shot some 120 ballistic tips and some A Max in the 2700 fps range I have even shot some 130 Scorocco's. Not too much data out on them or at least I haven't found much. I went through the same thing with a .260 Remington but at least it has a 24" barrel I bought lots of 6.5 projectiles I also have a 6.5x55 rifle. It's easy to load for.
@perdidocamaronero540011 ай бұрын
The 105 grain Sierra new load are actually Tipped Blitz King I am using 107 grain Sierra load data from their book for these. Starting load was with Winchester 760 I can't recall the weight but velocity was in the 2600's I might try Varget or H 4350 next . The accuracy was sub moa at 100 yards just not much speed.

Great video! I built a very similar whitetail rig this year. Bighorn Orgin action, 16” Excalibur carbon fiber barrel, AG Composites stock, Leupold VX-6 3-18 and a Q Half Nelson can. It’s a light weight, quiet tack-driver. I shoot 143 Gr ELD-X right at 2500 FPS

Massive respect ✊ I can’t believe how easily you got on at 1265 with no feedback on your miss

To be fair there was some luck in that one…. Always hard to figure out how to correct after missing with no feedback. All you know at that point is what you did on the last round didn’t work so you’ve got to make a guess on what to do next and hope it gets different results haha

I have a Remington 783 in 6.5 creedmoor with the factory 16.5 inch heavy barrel. Love it for whitetail hunting. I have been able to get sub moa with factory ammo without issue.

If it’s a non heavy barrel, do you think a 16” would still be ok for killing whitetail up to 400 yards?
@stevekuhns793 Жыл бұрын
@@HollerHunter , I wouldn't Imagine that the barrel profile would change much, mine is not a super heavy barrel just a little more so than a standard sporter. It has done very well on Whitetail for me.

@@stevekuhns793 how far are you comfortable shooting out to with it?
