This is what makes this channel better than the others out there, you can tell the pain Zach is feeling by not gettin the recovery. Posting this would be super hard i think for anyone. it's hard to admit or even show a failure! But that's why ive seen them all dating back to 2017! it's the pure passion! Great Hunt! keep the spirits up!

As far as I'm concerned, Zack checked all of the boxes, and made every effort to find the deer. As a bow hunter, you're gonna run into this situation sooner or later. Great job finding the area and getting into a great spot to have a shot! Posting this just shows you guys are the real deal..👍

@@panitehunter7884 I respectively disagree, didn't look like that to me. But everyone is entitled to an opinion. I believe that no matter who you are, sometimes a misplaced shot with an arrow happens, despite making evey effort. I was also referring to the way he realized it was not a perfect hit, backed out and gave it time, and then got help to try and recover the deer. He could have easily gave up on it and spent that time hunting another deer, but instead he chose to do everything he could to find it.

The nockturnal lighted nocks that Warb put us onto are the move. I had a pass-through shot through the abdomen of a big buck this year. I knew such was the case and called dog trackers while I was still in the stand. I waited 2 hours and sneaked out of the stand without looking at the arrow in the opposite direction of where the buck went. Waited 12 hours and went in with a united blood trackers dog. No blood visible. Deer was dead 150 yards away. I had just finished listening to the Shane Simpson pod cast and that influenced my actions big time. I appreciate your content and all that you have taught the community!

I think it is important to emphasize that the strategy worked. It takes a long time for most people, myself included, to appreciate that. Bad shots will sometimes happen. I hunted a turkey last year for about 2 weeks before I came up with a plan that I felt would work. I called him up and missed him clean at 35 steps. I just picked up my stuff, laughed at myself, and walked back to the truck with enough satisfaction about my strategy working to offset my frustration with missing. Thanks for sharing the whole story.

Super tough scenario and I agree with several other folks that commented, you can see the pain and disappointment in Zach's face and voice with the eventual outcome. There's no doubt that Zach and crew made absolutely every effort to recover that deer. It's amazing how resilient whitetail deer are....I shot a buck many years ago, hit nothing but shoulder. Fast forward a few months and I see the same deer bedded down just outside of my stand where I had initially shot him. Alive and well...and pissed at me LOL... I appreciate you guys and the pure passion you give to hunting...keep up the great work.

Minnesota born Whitetail guy here.... The thing I love most about our state is that you can go from the bluffs and river bottoms of the SE to the mixed Ag / Timber of the central to the wide open shooting of the west to the big woods wolf country of the North and never drive more than 5-6 hours between them. I've hunted them all many times and have loved every (almost every) minute of it.. It's really tough to beat the overall outdoor experience offered in our state. Just got done with '22 rifle season in Ottertail county. Brought my 6 year old to the stand with me for the first time and we were able to fill a few tags. He was super excited. We had a ton of fun.

Me and my hunting buddies refer to that area that forms a triangle that is below the spine, above the lungs and bordered by the shoulder the "devils triangle". You can hit there and it can look like a good hit but it is seldom lethal. If you hunt long enough, you will wound an animal. The good news is deer are incredibly tough and often heal completely.

I had the same scenario happen earlier this year. Except I shot from a stand. But the sound and the blood trail were so similar. It was my first buck with a bow and would’ve been my biggest buck to date. After the fact I was digging myself pretty hard. I done everything I could to find the deer, had a dog track and nothing. I ended up filling my tag with a rifle a little over a week ago. Got a picture from some friends of what I believe to be the buck I shot 3 days after I filled my tag. It had moved to the adjacent farm. Didn’t get full confirmation whether it had a wound or not but I’m pretty positive it was him. It’s good to see these videos like this, really helps to know others have had similar scenarios and that if you hunt long enough things like this happen. All you can do is try to do better for years to come

Zach, your story is a mirror image of what my season has been so far in Iowa. November 8th I had a Buck push a doe past 20 yards from me on the ground, quartered to. Shot, heard impact, arrow stuck in the deer and the blood was minimal. Tracked it for over 3.6 miles per OnX and never recovered. First time I’ve ever given up on a retrieval but there wasn’t much more I could do. Best of luck the rest of the season!

Thanks for helping normalizing game recovery dogs and showing sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. I have a young dog on his first tracking season in NH. Some folks don’t like it but it sure does help when there’s no blood. Some dogs are great with cold tracks over 12-24 hours and some only get worked up on the 2-12 hr tracks. It’s interesting how they’ll differ

By the way I lost a hammer last year non-lethal thru and thru way far back hit, like you didnt feel good initially, backed out and went in with a dog the next day and tracked him 1800 yards, before the dog signaled he was still on his feet, I put up cameras he showed up 2 wks later and I hit the mountain hard in search of him the rest of the year it was either the Big 10 I dubbed Lucky or I was eating my tag passed up 5 other great bucks that year you did all that you could and more than most would, thank you for keeping it real and showing a side of hunting that no other channel would dare truly authentic. I've always said there is far more learning opportunity in a failure than there is a success be that hunting or any other aspect of life, successful people aren't successful because they never failed they are successful because they had the perseverance and determination to push through.

We waited two hours. We found very little blood, just a drop here and there for the first 150 yards and then nothing. Period. One thing I have learned, the hard way, is rutting bucks are in a mode that makes it harder to kill them. Single lung, or liver, or a marginal shot, makes them very tough to track and find. Some will live through it, some won’t. The best results are with a heart shot. Where the blood pours out before they realize they are hit. And you usually see them go down. Great effort. On to the next one. Good luck!

Hard to be sure, but to me it looked like that deer ducked at the shot, which you just can’t avoid sometimes, especially in tall cover that keeps you from holding a bit low to compensate. Bro I feel your pain. Went to jasper county Missouri for my first out hunt out of Michigan. As a disabled vet I got resident firearms rates. So I'm out in Missouri hunting and an army buddy said I could use his 6.5 prc. I shot it at the range a few times and was good to go. So Sunday meeting rolls around and a monster steps out at 830am. I send it. My buddy was on the binos. He said you hit him hard. So we grab some more vets that were in camp to retrieve him. He was 10 yards away laying down. He got up and ran. I shot again with that big ole gun and hit a branch. He looked for a bit and had great blood. We have him more time. Came back out tracking him and bumped him again. He ran into other private. We had to back out. So I had to head back to Michigan. My team in Missouri said they would follow up and try to get permission to look in her property. The whole way home I was sick to my stomach. Replaying it in my head Gutter the 13 hr drive. So I just got conformation they can access it as of 11/15/22. Now I wait in Michigan to see if my trophy will be found. The pain.....ty

Small splotches of blood can mean just a muscle hit. Dark blood can mean a liver hit. Blood on the sides of an established trail can suggest pass thru. Blood in the middle of an established trail can suggest lung hit and the blood is dripping out of the mouth and nose especially if the hit is high and very little coming out of the entry/exit holes. Sometimes wounded deer can run like crazy for a short distance, but when they slow down, may pick up a regularly used trail. I think most of the time, if you have given it ample time to expire, and the dog can't find it, it will most likely live to be hunted another day. Good effort to find.

Sorry for this situation. The same thing happened to me in South Kansas. I rattled in a Really Nice buck. He was charging me and he turned broadside at 7 yards i released and hit him right in the dead zone. Hardly any blood on the arrow and on the ground, the arrow had quite a bit of meat on it though. I tracked him without blood in the direction i last heard him and never found much sign of a mortal wound. I hunted near that location 4 more mornings no birds and no coyotes were spotted anywhere in the area. I even spoke to a passing vulture on day 3 to help me out a little bit, he just kept making wide circles and disappeared in the distance.

Nice hunt and much respect for the effort in finding the buck. I've been bowhunting for almost 25 yrs and I've been through many different shot situations. Biggest thing that helped me was I always go for the heart shot. If the deer drops or stays still he's done. If I shoot under the deer then I made a bad shot. I'd rather my bad shot not make contact. Anyway the thought process seems to work for me! Can't wait till the next vid!

Let him sit a few hours and came back tracked all day and even with decent seeming blood didn’t come through. First time I had that. Really sucks. Kept going though and smoked a solid buck this week at 25yds and he only made it 60 more. Guess it’s just a nature of the game. Sometimes you do everything you can but they can win too.

That is upsetting to hear. I can understand the pain and frustration and sadness. 1. They could've died slowly and suffered more and 2. You could not get a trophy/meat you wanted. I shot my biggest buck ever Saturday and I don't know how I hit his leg. He lived and could never recover him so I understand the sadness. Great content and keep it up!

Happens to all of us at one time or another. Its why I also always use some kind of light up nocks….took a few years to find and rely on a certain brand….but its so much better when reviewing film and seeing that nock light up and hit its target.

Tough luck Zach. Probably the hardest thing us Hunters have to do is leaving not knowing for sure if they lived or died. That's one Negative about hunting from the ground is not having the visibility of a shot like from a tree. I prefer being elevated if at all possible.

Any one who has hunted for an extended period of time has shot a deer and not recovered the deer. It happens an the positive attitude you have is critical for learning from your mistakes and that is a part of the continued growth of a hunter.

Although its a super awful feeling not finding the deer, its one of those things that you just cant seem to avoid as a bow hunter. Most, if not all of us have had a similar shot, and its those shots that teach us the most about bow hunting. It sucks now, but its going to be a learning experience you don’t soon forget. Will you second guess yourself the next few time you pull back? Sure. But after the initial sting wears off, you will more than likely make a conscious effort to do everything in your power to avoid a repeat from here on out. Awesome hunt Zach, learn from it, and come out a better bow hunter on the other side!

Incredible hunt. Zach is a top notch hunter and an even better sportsman. The respect he has for the game he hunts makes him one of the greatest role models for younger hunters! Keep your head up Zach. If you’ve bow hunted long enough this will happen unfortunately.
