To further care for those original units: Definitely clean it up well and replace the thermal paste. Most people, including myself, also recommend jailbreaking the system just to have more control over it. The main benefit for longevity being you can manipulate the fan settings, so keep it consistently increased or make sure your console doesn't go over a certain temperature.

So from an experienced modder with an A01: I would not agree that the fixes for this model are just a “stopgap” solution. If you do the full job and replace caps, reball, modify the heatsink and put in an E01 power supply, it will basically last forever. Also replacing the stock hdd with a larger one from a better brand (my stock was Toahiba). Mine still gets at least a few dozen hours of use every year and is going strong 8 years after mods.

Hi, do know if someone has a tutorial for a newbie on how to do all of this? I would like to get a BC PS3 but im afraid of not knowing how to maintain it enough and running it to the ground in the process.
@RyanLeCocq4 жыл бұрын
@@IWill_iTV There are a few videos on KZbin about it, but I haven't actually watched them. I think I originally learned from forums when the PS3 was still current. If it's hard to find guides on an all-in-one process where someone replaces everything, you can probably find individual guides. I'll list the stuff you want to do. 1. Upgrade the power supply. If it's the oldest A,B or C model, it's the absolute worst so this is a must. The E,G or H series PSU is better and can be a replacement for the older model (what I did). There were also 3rd party ones BITD, like where people used a generic PSU and fabricated brackets, but no idea if those still exist. There is actually a cheap half-fix of just spacing the older ones off the board like the newer ones to gain a little cooling. 2. Replace numerous capacitors (anyone can learn to do this easily with a soldering iron, one of the simplest circuit repairs). If you search "PS3 phat capacitor upgrade" you should find guides on which ones are the important ones. There should be lots of pictures. 3. Reball the RSX. NOT THE SAME AS "REFLOW" that some do, by which they mean heat it up with a heat gun and hope for the best. You need to remove it and reattach it. This is tough to do honestly as a regular Jill or Joe. You have to use a heat gun and really carefully cover everything else with foil. This is one of the big failure points, but reballing is not easy to do successfully the first, second or even tenth time with consumer tools. You need a heat gun that can do about 400F or about 205C, which is a bit dangerous. I recommend just biting the bullet and paying someone to do it. You can send it to someone selling the service on eBay if there is nowhere in your area that does it. 4. Repaste the Cell and the RSX (do not use liquid metal even if you add copper surface, it breaks down over time way faster than paste and you want to leave this thing closed forever after this). Another mod that is really good, but very DIY is to modify your heatsink. The stock one looks like some kind of alien spaceship, but it's basically an ugly and bad PC cooler. There are tons of methods out there to modify low-profile PC coolers to fit. As long as it fits in the space and you plug a fan in, the PS3 will detect it and turn on. 5. Bonuses: Replace the blueray drive and the internal fans. Even if there's nothing wrong with them at the moment, you can get better fans that are quieter and the disc drives eventually fail, might as well put a fresh one in if you're doing all that. If you replace the whole unit, all the moving parts will be new. You can replace the hard drive at any time and it doesn't require a tutorial. It's a user accessible, labeled bay on the outer edge of the system. You can do it at any time with just a ph1.5 screw driver. The system itself will format the drive and install its firmware. It's been ages and I don't have another spare one to make a new guide myself, but I hope that points you in the right directions.
@RyanLeCocq4 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention this because it wasn't exactly an answer to your question, but getting an E01 to start with that is in excellent condition and taking good care of it is an option. There are a few games that don't emulate perfectly, while all games function perfectly on the originals because they have the EE chip. I would recommend looking at videos of the glitches in the games that have them and deciding if you care about those games. I know numerous people with that generation of PS3s that have just used them upright and kept them dust free, had no problems since new. It is possible if you are careful with it (amd a little lucky) without replacing anything.

The only issue I've had with it to this point was trying to connect to my psn account which I eventually managed to do by changing my password and removing the auto sign in. It was interesting to learn the E01 has better sharpening to the point where text becomes eligible. I'm still happy with my purchase though as now having a backwards compatible ps3 and a ps5 means I have the capability to play almost any disk game that has ever been released for playstation, which means a lot to me considering I have a strong feeling that companies want to remove physical media entirely so that they can choose what we actually own. Maintenance is a must for these consoles. Cleaning dust and replacing the thermal paste is extremely important. Due to poor ventilation design, avoid placing the console in enclosed cabinets. All vent holes must be free from obstruction. Intake vents are located on the front, left, and bottom side of the console. Exhaust vents are located on the back and right side of the console. This means there are vent holes all around the console; keeping the console in the open with no obstruction around it is essential for proper cooling. Also do not use intercooler fans as these are poorly designed and further restrict airflow.

I've been doing some research about the differences between the cecha01 model and the ceche01 model. Your video pretty much answered of which model to get. Yeah, it would be nice to get the launch a01 model, but I don't want to run with any issues with the YLOD. Plus, I don't know any good places that could repair it properly. Unless, I end up finding a modded a01 model that takes care of those certain issues you mentioned in the video. So, overall, the e01 model would be the best option for me.

Ahaha. WOW, dude. Great video. Really put a smile on my face and I happened to see it in my recommended list. Glad I clicked on it. It's such a niche and seemingly arbitrary topic, but at the same time it's really an issue involving longing and it's sort of a bit sad for more seasoned gamers. It definitely makes me feel better about my MGS4 bundle E01 PS3. But I sort of knew the benefits even beforehand. Emulation is far superior to hardware, so long as the programming follows through and it functions accurately. It actually allows for MORE possibilities than what the hardware offers, because there aren't any physical limitations, software can override the... err, well, software it's playing and potentially add more functionality. The good old E01 is a bit more reliable as the CELL CPU was brought down to 65 nanometres. The CELL at the time of the A01 was at a whopping, chunky 85nm. The PS3 really was a good Soviet-Era condo heater. The thermal paste they used was really cheap on the old PS3s and it's for these reasons - among others - that I really gave Sony the cold shoulder and never looked back. It also made me respect Nintendo even more, because their hardware is absolutely bullet-proof and they put so much into its design in regards to reliability and just function with clock-like precision in mind. My E01 DID get the YLOD, but I got the Ball Grid Array reballed with lead solder a couple months later. I also have to point out that something like a BGA reball isn't patch-work. The console will last indefinitely at that point. That was the main cause of the YLOD, solder ball cracks on the BGA. It makes me curious about custom firmware and whether or not folks could tune the emulation in E01 models? The later PS3s also have better PSUs and fans with a higher blade count (more quiet). Here's to hoping that the PS5 has full backwards compatibility. And something even more intriguing - but admittedly hopeful - that Sony actually acknowledge us PS3 owners who purchased their console and got the YLOD. I would still be a little hard-pressed to give them my money again purely based on that.

Well, it is known nowadays that the main cause of the YLOD is bad capacitors named NEC/TOKIN, tho cracked solder balls still could happen.

Something I think you should know, it’s actually easy to upgrade the storage In these models. I have the CECHE01 and when I picked it up used, it was already upgraded. So storage is not an important point for me, but the reliability concerns are. And if you replace the RSX chip that fails often and you replace the capacitors that fail, these things can last for a very long time after being refurbished. So if you can do that, the reliability concerns aren’t that large either. However the E01 still makes ps2 games look better, although that can be argued too because some prefer the more authentic and genuine look of those games that’s provided by the A01. So if you can refurbish one of these bad boys by repasting and replacing the RSX chip and the capacitors, and potentially delidding, these things can keep going strong for years. To be honest though, it’s unlikely that people are going to go through all of that trouble. E01 models are cheaper, so if you really wanted to play most ps2 games, an E01 makes sense

Thank you for doing this comparison! Been looking for a backwards compatible PS3, and was caught between the two. Plan on adding more vent holes, applying new thermal paste, and maybe upgrading the fan on it when I get it. If simply replacing the Tokin capacitors would fix the reliability issues with the A01, I would probably go for it.
@RomeGoLARGE4 жыл бұрын
Good luck!! I have 4 of them I think I'm going to do some preventive maintenance to mine.as.well
@victoriafoard19944 жыл бұрын
The nec tokin fix is pretty well documented at this point. As for the vent holes don't bother with that. Now that's not me saying "oh you shouldn't care about the themal state!" No rather that's a bandaid that disturbs the designs airflow which could lead to issues elsewhere. All while failing to address the biggest problem spot of WHY these old phat ps3's get so hot. The root of that heat is almost entirely in a handful of facts. First the unit(A01) uses the largest size chips at a relatively massive 90nm. This itself isn't a huge deal if not for the next two problems though. Sony used an Internal Heat Spreader(this is the metal bit over the chip with the writing on it, it's nickel plated copper. Pretty well made). Unfortunately the units are all over a decade old and it's further complicated by sony using thermal paste under the IHS that ages extremely poorly. Finally some of the launch units have extremly inefficient PSU. As in 60% efficiency. Which meant 34% of the power was just getting turned to heat and then sitting right over the RSX. Not good. The good news is those issues can all be resolved to varying degrees. Starting with the PSU replacing it with a more power efficient APS-226(83% efficency! Much cooler than the notoriously bad ZSSR's 66%). So right out the gate we can decrease the heat generated by swapping the PSU if it's equipped with a bad one. Next we need to address the heat generation of the chips. We have two options to approach(ideally you want to do both). So first we know the unit makes a lot of heat, using applications via CustomFirmWare(instead of OriginalFirmWare) or other modifications that intercept and tweak the fan speed. That will help keep it cooler, but it can only do so much if the thermal paste has degraded. The next two options are in varying risk. So first of all all modern consoles use thermal paste. And yes you're going to want to replace it on top of the IHS. That's going to help it transfer the heat much better from the IHS to the massive heatsink that made the launch units 11 lbs(5KG for the non imperial folks). The real issue is that the paste under the IHS has been degrading all this time. Time and heat from running will degrade even the best stuff. So the delicate and somewhat risky option to really cut the systems temperatures down means performing a delid. Improperly done the delid -will- kill your console. When done correctly though nothing will be damaged and the old paste can be replaced. A delid isn't something for the faint of heart or those that aren't steady of hand. Further still you need the correct tools to do it relatively safely. Even then even a single slip up damaging the chip or the traced under the masking will potentially make the launch ps3 into a fancy brick. But when all of those modifications are done it becomes possible to have a launch PS3 running at under 60 Celsius without sounding like a jet engine. I know this is is an incredibly long post but I'm rather fond of these old units and think they get an overly harsh rap due in part to people failing to perform proper lifespan prolonging maintenance. Also while you have it open to replace the paste you might as well go ahead and replace the thermal pads. Things are a decade old. PS: I honestly think the storage capacity comparison was silly. Any ps3(especially these early phats where you don't even need to reinstall the firmware because it's all stored on board in nand!) can have the HDD changed by the end user.

Now you tell me if this is worth it....for me nothing else comes close Also there's no way the CECHE wins,the backwards compatibility is pretty bad sometimes as you say yourself,they fail the same as the CECHA because they actually use the same chips and the same NEC/Tokins (so you were just unlucky with your A01) also the CECHE upscales up to 720p while the CECHA upscales to 1080p (as RGB101 says),so how can it win? Also lots of games will never ever see remasters,I'm pretty sure that the whole humanity will die by COVID or something before capcom remasters Haunting Ground and this is just an example,there's tons of games that will never ever get a remaster. I liked the video in general,but the conclusion is wrong.

I appreciate the comparison between these two models. I would like to comment on reliability, as the CECH-A/B and CECH-C/E have exactly the same RSX. Since this is the main failure point of all the PS2 BC models, the reliability WILL be the same. The only difference is that the CECH-A/B happen to be physically older. It's also why PS3 games look the same, they have the same PS3 GPU and encoder chip. That being said, I have heard of issues with black screens while opening PS2 software on CECH-A/B models. Since those models have far more PS2 components than the C/E, it seems like that aspect of the console may be more prone to failure. Some (not all!) A/B models also have very inefficient and hot ZSSR power supplies, which could effect reliability. While this is a comparison between two models and not an overview of PS2 BC consoles as a whole, I think it would be nice to mention that BC PS3 models support USB PS2 peripherals as well. Including the network adapter.

Just a few things: 1. The partial-emulation PS3 actually originally came out in PAL regions as the launch PS3 in March 2007 (it was delayed by a few months for PAL regions). This meant that partial-emulation was the only option for PAL games until custom firmware allowed region-free gaming on the 20GB/NTSC 60GB PS3s. 2. Both the full-hardware and the partial-emulation PS3s produce the same amount of heat. Sony did start producing CPU and GPU chips that produce less heat, but these were only ever available on non-BC PS3s. The first non-BC PS3 was the 40GB PS3, which came out in Europe in October 2007. 3. Another advantage of the partial-emulation PS3 was discovered a few years ago. In full-hardware PS3s, when playing games with upscaling enabled, enabling 480p mode in a game that supports it disables the PS3's upscaler. This means that you have the choice of upscaled 480i/576i or non-upscaled 480p. In partial-emulation models, enabling 480p mode does not turn off the PS3's upscaler, meaning you can have upscaled 480p output. This helps me ...thanks I have the CECHC03 model..I got it dirt cheap, 2nd hand but practically new looking. I already had a PS3 but bought it simply to play B-Boy from PS2...lol Wish they made a PS4 version of that game...great game.

Great video, I’ve been looking around for a PS3 that plays PS1 and PS2 games so I can have all 3 in one. I still have my PS2 so depending on the full harbor price I’ll most likely get the regular 320G PS3 so I can play PS1 and PS3 games

The MGS4 version (the E01) is the one I bought back in the day and it is still the PS3 I use to this day. It freezes during a part in Yakuza that makes the game unbeatable, but otherwise it's the only issue I've ever had with the system during backwards compatibility.

It’s technically an CECHE01MG. 🤷♂️😃

Another counterpoint regarding PS2 games and remasters: While there's a lot of stuff that is out there on the stores or has been re-released, there are plenty, and I do mean plenty, of PS2 games that haven't been re-released on a storefront somewhere. A good example that comes to mind is the Shadow Hearts series, or something like Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria - and these are both games that cause some difficulties on PCSX2 (especially VP:S). You simply won't find them outside of a PS2 disc. Period. I've got a CECHA01, which I had sent off to get dumped, downgraded, reballed, and so on. I'm pretty darned happy with it, though of course now there's way more convenient (and arguably, more powerful) things out there, especially if we're talking stuff like homebrew (the Switch and earlier PS4s come to mind). The good news is both A's and E's are fully downgradeable for those who are interested in that route. I don't know how much A's go for nowadays, but when I got mine some 7-8 years ago, it cost me $600 - yes, new console price, plus I think about an extra $125-150 to mail it off to a guy in Georgia to do the downgrading, reballing, etc. Pretty sure that nowadays it's even more expensive - they were fairly rare then, I can only imagine they're a good bit rarer now.

I hope yall are ready for some good info for keeping your PS3 alive as well as some facts. Smash that Read More button for big brain knowledge.. The parts list: The CECHA CECHB and CECHE all have the same 90nm CPU and GPU that produces the same amount of heat. There are some gems to be found however between the consoles. There is a lottery system going on inside your PS3 between the A B and E models as far as the components you will find inside of them. The 19 blade fan. The APS-226 Power Supply. These are the gems you want inside of your console. The 19 blade fan pushes more air and keeps your system cooler, and the APS-226 Power Supply gets warm to the touch. The components you dont want are the 15 blade fan and the ZSSR5391A Power Supply which could probably cook and egg if you cracked one on top of it (I am not exaggerating). Fan Speed: (This is the most important part): We need to increase the fan speed on these consoles because Sony rather them be HOT and quiet, rather than COOL and audible. Your fan speeds may be quiet giving you the impression that your console is running cool, but its actually going through a thermonuclear meltdown. We MUST fix this with H4X! These consoles are approaching the end of their online days, so its time to not worry about a ban, and it is time to mod / hack / jailbreak your system. As of me writing this every CECHA, CECHB, AND CECHE is exploitable on the latest firmware 4.85. Step 1: Jailbreak your PS3 and install a CFW (I prefer REBUG) Step 2: Install Webman Mod Step 3: Enable Dynamic Fan Control The profit? Every time you turn your PS3 on Webman Mod will take control of your fan speed and keep your PS3 from overheating. Your console will be more audible, but it will live. Maintenance: Thermal Paste. We have saved thermal paste for last, because it is pointless to reapply your thermal paste if you don't go through the steps above. Your PS3 WILL DIE if you dont fix the fan speed issue. But to wrap things up.. your thermal paste gets dry over the years and doesn't conduct heat as well. You need to replace this at some point. Also there are thermal pads that will be getting brittle by now and should also be replaced. So, 1. Upgrade your Fan and Power Supply 2. Jailbreak your PS3 and control your fan speeds. 3. Replace thermal paste. Your PS3 will NOT die if you do these things. How am I so sure of that? Have you ever seen a KZbin post this long and detailed? Probably not. I am dedicated to keeping these systems alive. I want these things to be a retro rarity one day, not a museum piece that doesn't turn on.

The 19 fan isn't a miracle. Better delid that CELL instead of overheating more than it should. Also, if you have the disgrace of having that ZSS PSU, better put it outside the console.
@garretts2284 жыл бұрын
@@MGOFor3ver The 19 blade fan keeps temps down by 2-3 degrees Celsius compared to the 15 when swapping a 19 blade into a CECHE. The APS-226 PSU lowered the CPU temps of a CECHA by 8 degree celsius!! This is while using SYSCON (ps3's built in fan management which is terrible) if you jailbreak your PS3 the benefit of improving your temperature with better fans and cooler PSUs is really only to lower the fan speed while using a temperature manager. Jailbreaking and using a fan / temperature manager such as Webman is really your end all problems solution. It will agresively keep your temperature down but will increase fan speed / noise as a side effect. If you don't plan to jailbreak, the 19 blade fan does help with thermals. Also Deliding really shouldn't be done unless your PS3 is actually overheating which can be checked by jailbreaking. Deliding will give you at most a 3 degree temperature drop unless the paste is indeed dried up. Deliding is just too dangerous to immediately recommend.
@MGOFor3ver4 жыл бұрын
@@garretts228 I know all of that, and I still think the fan thing is just a myth. About the delidding, It's the must do option here because that thermal paste is +10 years old. You better start from there, then the PSU thing, which in this case would be better using it as external. I prefer the original thing, at least for my main CECHA. If you don't want to delid, then you have to use the fan at high rpms, and that's all. A lot of noise.
@garretts2284 жыл бұрын
@@MGOFor3ver What you think or feel is subjective. I have tested these things and have pictures and temperature recordings. Deliding makes almost no difference unless the PS3 is currently overheating. The 19 blade fan drops both CPU and RSX temperatures by 3 degrees average at the same fan speed The APS-226 runs warm to the touch and doesn't need to be external. Deliding yielded me at most 3 degree better temperature readings when the PS3 WASNT over heating which they technically do leaving the factory because of the slow fan speeds. The most important thing to do is jailbreak your console to let a homebrew fan controller monitor and control your PS3s fan speed and temperature.

I have the A01. I bought it used from a pawnshop in really good shape and have never cleaned it. It does get very hot and the fan sounds like a jet engine when it kicks on high which is quite often during extended play time. However, keeping it Vertical (standing up) With the right hand side vent facing up instead of having it Horizontal really makes a difference keeping it cooler because the heat flows up and out the top even though the fan pushes most of the air out the back vent.
