I own a Winchester model 1300 12 ga. and when racking it recently the shell did not feed into the chamber; It simply fell to the floor. I did have the shotgun pointed up (vertical). So when I finished racking it, there was no shell chambered. Any ideas as to why this would happen?

I’ve read and seen plenty of videos stating that Remingtons quality has dropped and the cause of the 870’s jamming issues. When I first bought mine 15 years ago it shot and cycled as expected, but the last couple times out it will jam every round. As some of the videos show I did some of the part replacements (extractor, etc) and polishing yet still jamming. My next step is to do more polishing/filing.
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 2 жыл бұрын
"jam" is a ubiquitous word, you need to analyze which component of the cycle of operation is failing ( Feed, chamber, lock, fire, unlock, extract, eject and cock). This will enable you to identify the solution, so for example there's no point in replacing the shell latches if the issue is "failure to extract". When I start diagnosing issues I was taught do in the S.A.M.M. order. Shooter, Ammo, Maintenance & Mechanical. Despite my temptation (because it's fun) to start tearing the firearm apart and replacing parts, I always look at the shooters technique first, then try different ammo, then make sure the firearm is clean and lubricated before I start looking a parts.

Wow that second jam caused me to field strip the whole darn thing with a live round in the tube... I was sweating bullets. Finally it racked after reassembly (idk what I did) and I was able to get the round in the chamber, and just dump it...

Hi good video my 870 remington tactical has a weak ejection of the used shells, i hav to rack it hard to eject them properly and they dont fly away, they bearly get out. Unused shots are ejected really great maybe because they are heavy i dont know why this happens and how to fix it. Do you know how?
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 6 жыл бұрын
First place to look is the ejector and ejector spring (assuming it's a 12ga). The ejector tip could be broken that's what makes the shell really fly out, the spring just gives it a gentle push if you pull the action back slowly. If the ejector is broken it's replaceable but it's going to take a gunsmith or armorer and it's going to mar the finish on outside of the receiver.

I have a Winchester 1897 riot made in 1919 in very nice original condition including blueing. What would cause the pump to be stuck in the forward position? I can’t pump it back to extract the spent shell. It’ll randomly come but like once every 20 tries.
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 7 ай бұрын
There's a part called the action slide lock that's supposed to move out of the way when the hammer falls that allows the action to be pulled back. Chances are that's gummed up and not moving. Can you release the action with the action release (the button on the right side of receiver below the hammer)? So could be a stuck part issue, basic disassembly and cleaning should help. Find a parts diagram and identify the action slide lock and see if it moves freely. Caveat, I'm no '97 expert. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching

Hello, I just got a NEW Rem 870 express tactical. When firing my new shotgun this past weekend I encountered several of the same malfunctions using cheap brass shells (Federal Target Loads $20/100) Did not have a stovepipe or extraction issues. What I had, was issues with the shell NOT going fully into battery. When pumping forward the shell would get stuck. Would have to eject it to get it out. Any advice? Is it the cheap shells? Do I need to polish the chamber? Am I short stroking it?
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 5 жыл бұрын
I learned when addressing firearm issues to check things in the "SAMM" order. Shooter, Ammo, Maintenance, Mechanical. So first I would look at your operating technique, be sure to be rapid, forceful with the action. Second try a different ammo and make sure your ammo is the right type for your firearm. A 3" shell in a 2/34" chamber doesn't fit very well (though at $5 per box I doubt that's the problem). Then make sure the firearm is clean and lubricated. Final start checking the mechanics of the gun, first thing I'd look at is the carrier. Make sure the carrier is presenting the shell to the chamber for a smooth feed. Remove the barrel and hand feed a couple of rounds see how they feel (best to use dummy rounds of course.). Good luck, thanks for watching.

I had an issue today. Im not sure if it was the ammo or the knob wasn't on tight enough. I load up my shotgun, everything is cycling correctly, but it wouldn't fire each shell. I would squeeze the trigger but it wouldn't shoot until I popped the shell out and use the next one.
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the action isn't locking forward, at least that's one thing it could be. Make sure you pump the action rapidly and with force. If you pull the trigger and you don't hear a "click" then either the hammer didn't cock properly or the gun isn't in battery and the action is probably still isn't locked forward. If you can pull the action back, without first hearing the click or pressing the action release, then it's probably because you didn't run the action forward with enough force.

Hello ,Is it possible to recharge a pump action shotgun pointing the gun downwards? as the shell will jam and will not come up with the lever to insert the chamber.so is it completely wrong to recharge it downwards and a must to be horizontal or upwards while recharging it?
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 5 жыл бұрын
So the most important thing to remember is to keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. So down being often the most safe (not always) yes it is OK to cycle the action in that orientation. However, always move the action (pump it) with force and speed. If you do that you can cycle the gun in any orientation, even on it's side, ejection port down. If you move the action slowly there are a number of orientations that will cause a malfunction. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.

Hmmm presuming you mean crimped length (unshot), if you're using a magnum receiver it should work with 3" shells (SAAMI spec length about 67 to 70mm) otherwise you need to stick to the the 2 3/4" shells (SAAMI spec about 61-62mm).

Shell latch(s) sticking, worn, broken or missing? I'm not familiar with Dickinson, but if the shell latches are like the ones on most shotguns, it could be they're worn. that would be rare but possible, they could have come loose from the receiver and slid back a little. Is the gun in good condition, the shell latch could get stuck in the compressed position if they were really dirty or rusted (or not fitted correctly). Hope that helps.

Hello, I hope you receive this information, I own a 1975 Ithaca Model 37 12g Featherlite 28" ribbed barrel with a MOD choke, what are good brand of 00/slug shells to use that are not low brass, also how can one tell when purchasing shells that they are or are not low brass. Thank you
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 4 жыл бұрын
The difference between high brass and low brass is pretty much a thing of the past. It used to be high brass cartridges were higher power or perceived to be a higher quality. That really doesn't apply these days (I'm sure somebody will disagree with that :-) but to answer your question. If it's a high brass shell, they'll tell you (to try to get more value) but you can just look at it, high brass has about 3/4 of metal case on the sides, before the plastic shows. As for best brand, I don't have a preference, especially for a pump shotgun. One of the advantages of the pumps, is they aren't nearly as picky as autoloaders. And besides, even in the good times 00 doesn't have much selection available, so you kind of have to go with what you can find.

What if you cant access the carrier when you get a double feed malfunction?
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure how that would happen. The shell is either on top of the carrier or the carrier is on top of the shell. If you can't access the carrier, then the shell is on top of the carrier (gun upside down orientation) then you don't have a double feed, if the carrier is on top of the shell then what I show works.

Sounds like your cartridge interrupter or cartridge stop is letting the shell slip past when the elevator is up. See my video on the Western Field 550 which has the same parts kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXrTZpeJatVnkMk That can happen if the lip [of interrupter or the stop] is worn or broken. Odd that would be the case with a new gun. Also if the elevator wasn't dropping down when the bolt went forward, but something would have to be seriously broken for that to happen, again, odd for new gun. Just my thoughts, hope that helps.

Although informative and well done, I can only say that my .12 ga. Remington Wingmaster is 42 yrs. old and been used quite extensively. In those 42 yrs., I have never experienced any of the malfunctions shown in this video. Is it possibly due to a better made shotgun 40 yrs. ago, when compared to current production models?
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 5 жыл бұрын
I agree this platform is so reliable you seldom see these malfunctions. I've got a 1953 wingmaster and a 1989 and unlike many manufacturers Remington didn't cheapen this gun very much in all those years. But this is a spin off of my Law Enforcement training classes, so we train for even the slightest possibility of failure. The stakes are higher than missing a shot on a pheasant :-) Plus, sad to say, many of the squad car guns I worked with are about as old as yours but haven't been treated as well. But to your point, I'm going to change the title to read "common types" not "common" because as you say, they aren't that common.
@reb1050
@reb1050 5 жыл бұрын
@@ImminentThreatDefense I understand about the stakes being a lot higher in a life threatening situation. I currently have two .12 ga. Remingtons. One, I bought about 5 yrs. ago and it has become my hunting shotgun. The older one has retired from hunting, has a shortened barrel, and is considered to be my "welcome mat". However, it actually sees more use now than it did when it was my hunting shotgun. I am sure you will agree that any firearm used for self defense requires one thing....Practice, practice, and more practice.

What about after you shoot your pump shot gun and the spent shell doesn’t come out. It’s very difficult to get out.

It's called "failure to extract" the solution is; transition to your pistol. But as far as diagnosing the problem when you say it's difficult to get out. Do you mean the pump action works but the shell stays in the chamber or does the gun lock up and not want to pump? First, push the empty shell hull out with a cleaning rod and inspect it. Look for why it was stuck (swelled, ruptured) or why it wouldn't extract (torn rim, no extractor marks). Then inspect the extractor, is it broken, stuck, missing, not moving freely? Is the extractor engaging the rim of the shell? If it's the action that won't move but the spent shell fits easily in the chamber and comes out easily, then the problem can be in the action release and have nothing to do with the shell. Start with a good cleaning and inspection. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching!

Imminent Threat Defense once I shoot I pump it and the shell that was fired won’t come out once I pump it. Does that make sense. It’s a very old 16 gage.

@@harpazosnatched2247 Probably we need to make sure you've got a bolt face extractor. What model shotgun is this? But presuming you've got a common model pump shotgun, does the empty shell remove easily when you push it out with cleaning rod (put the cleaning rod in the muzzle end and push the shell out of the chamber)? If that's the case then it's a problem with the extractor, it could be broken or stuck back. Look at the extractor it should be kind of hook shaped and it should hinge outward just a little and then spring back into place. If it's broken, then the end of the extractor will be missing and there may be scratch marks on the lip of the shell (where the extractor tried but failed to get a grip on the shell) In which case it needs to be replaced. If the extractor doesn't hinge out and spring back it could be really gummed up or rusted, in which case it needs to be cleaned, possibly removed to get fully cleaned. You can see what an extractor should look like on my Winchester model 12 video or my Higgins model 10 video.

@ImminentThreatDefense

The number one cause of this problem is lack of operating the action with vigor. Forcefully move the action all the way to the rear and then immediately snap it forward. If that doesn't help try changing shells. If you're still having the problem it may be time to take it to a gunsmith or armorer.

I always appreciate viewers who check the details and keep me honest. But in this case, actually those are not live rounds. That's a Remington dummy round available to factory armorers. It does have shot and wadding in it to give it the weight and balance of live ammo but it has no powder or primer. Fiochi also makes them they're available through Brownell’s part number 100-039-843MB thanks for watching!

Nice. Although there's nothing about failure to extract in the video. I have no idea what most are, and I had thought a double feed is one in the chamber and the bolt close with the extra shell.
@ImminentThreatDefense
@ImminentThreatDefense 3 жыл бұрын
True about the failure to extract, I probably should have added something. There are actually two modes of failure to extract, the first is what you describe bolt comes back but extraction fails, which could result a jam when the next shell tries to load, the corrective action for that one is to fish out the loose shell and try to eject again or ramrod the chambered shell out. The second is when the shell sticks in the chamber and you're unable to pull the action back. The solution for that one is make sure the shell is discharged and take it to a gunsmith. There is a combat method called "mortaring" where you (make sure the shell is discharged) hold down the action bar release, pull on the action and (keeping your face away from the muzzle) slam the butt into the ground, a very dangerous method suitable only for use only combat. The double feed I described in the video would only happen if you have worn shell latches or a chipped rim on the shell. Something we saw in Law Enforcement with heavily used shotguns and shells that had been loaded and unloaded (at shift change) numerous times. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@killertruth186
@killertruth186 3 жыл бұрын
@@ImminentThreatDefense Yeah, and the cause of that to happen. Maybe the brass on the shell could've expanded due to multiple times of the shells being loaded. Or the chamber isn't polished (or even clean enough).
