If we’re being totally honest, Sexton was a pain in the hole for every opposition player, and the refs too. He attracts sledging. And if we’re also being honest, there is a world of difference between O’Mahony sledging Cane DURING a game in the 2nd of 3 tests, and then shaking his hand after, than Rieko saying what he said to Sexton AFTER the game in what was Sexton’s final game. It completely lacked any element of class and was contrary to the spirit of the game where you shake hands after the whistle and have a beer.

It has been fascinating watching this drama between Johnny Sexton and Reiko Ioane that happened at the final whistle of last year's World Cup Quarter Final, get reignited by the release of Sexton's Autobiography. We know that both players said some things in the heat of the moment they probably shouldn't have, but I don't think we really know who fired the first shot. Obviously Sexton has claimed that Ioane was the instigator, but to the best of my knowledge we never saw the whole incident unfolding on camera so it's just as likely that Sexton fired first. Sexton had a reputation of being a mouthy player and was banned prior to the World Cup for abusing former referee Jaco Peyper from South Africa. Ioane is someone who won't hesitate saying a few words if he thinks it's necessary, but it's also likely that he did fire the first shot. At the end of the day, what happens on the field should stay on the field. Rugby should be about being enemies on the field but mates off it.

Given Johnny Sexton's reputation of being quite mouthy on the field, it's likely that he said something first and has twisted the truth trying to make it look like Reiko Ioane was the instigator. Sexton is also trying to sell his autobiography so it's likely that he chose to throw that allegation in there to spark up interest in it. He also falsely claimed that Sam Whitelock was the tackler and didn't release the ball carrier when he earned the penalty to give the All Blacks the win. If Ioane was the instigator it probably came from a desire to give Sexton a dose of his own medicine. Let's not forget that Peter O'Mahoney was caught on the referee's microphone in 2022 calling Sam Cane a "shit Richie McCaw". The All Blacks hated that sledge and were obviously keen to right a few wrongs when they met the Irish again in that World Cup Quarter Final. That may have been why Ioane did what he did if he was the instigator.
